Description
Hey guys, took a little longer than anticipated but finally completed the video. The painting itself I completed earlier last week and once again was another piece inspired by LOTR. Spent a total of 9hrs on it.
Feel free to download the video below. It's a little large (544mb), but the movie itself is around 110mintues. It also was produced in .mov format so you'll probably need quicktime player or Itunes to view it.
I tried my best to explain what I'm doing in various areas of the painting, as well as to why I'm doing it that way. For any of you that do end up watching the video, feel free to leave feedback on that as well. This is my first one, but I'm looking to do more of these in the future, so any suggestions you guys might have on improving them I would love to hear.
[changes] Edited the video to increase the overall sound quality and raised the volume a bit for some people who were having sound issues. Feel free to check out the new version below.

Awesome tutorial, it really helped. Just a few questions: how do you switch from paint brush to eyedropper so quickly? Is there a special button or something? And where did you get all the texture brushes from? I don't have any. Are they in a special hard to find menu? My photoshop is CS5, it should be more advanced, right?

you can search brushes using google, yahoo, etc.
psdtutorials.com has also a large useful offer..
if you downloaded some brushes,
just double-click on them and they will be installed.
you can find them afterwards in the brushes library ;]

Thanks! : D I installed some myself, but most are really... not practical. I mean, who would want a whole waterfall for a brush!

Wow! Thank you for the tutorial! Easily the best I have found anywhere, very in depth and I learned a TON of new things. I have a whole new outlook on how to approach digital painting. I have really been making things way too complicated and seeing your process is like a breath of fresh air for a beginning digital artist like myself. For such a long video, I was never bored and found the narrating most insightful. Awesome painting and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future. (hopefully more videos!) Thanks again!

wow very impressive. You did a really great job in this picture.. I feel like i am already watching lord of the rings already lol. great color contrast and use of colors.
I was wondering though if you would allow me to use this image in the trading card game I am working on; I will give full credit to you if you allow me to use the picture. I will not use this image unless you give permission of course. If you have any questions just post a comment here or email me at cardsofwar@live.com

Hi, thanks for this great video!
I was wondering how did you change from rgb to hsb? And do you use keyboard to switch colors? Because I have a feeling that you didn't choose colors with mouse every time. (This might be a stupid question, but I'm still a beginner in photoshop) Thanks

I actually downloaded this video about a month ago but I just now got around to watching it and I certainly gained some better insight after doing so.
A couple things that really stood out to me where the starting resolution for your image being gigantic. (way way bigger than ive ever tried) I should probably start bigger then resize to smaller as you do. You can obviously get more detail in while reamining very rough at such a large size.
And also using a standard hard round brush @ 100% opacity but with limited flow. I haven't tried that before and it really seemed to work a lot better than my method which is a hard brush but with opacity set to pen preasure and 100% flow. Ill have to try it.
I've also never used overlay layers when applying base color and now Im left wondering why it never occured to me.
Like I said, im pretty sure my art will start to improve very quickly after watching this.
Are you still working on another tutorial? I seem to remember a post about that recently by you.

It deffinantly helped me a lot in terms of starting out a piece and use of brushes.
My biggest problem at this point is constructing realistic looking color/texture. You make it look so easy in your video to create authentic armor/clothing textures but I guess 9 hours down to 1:50 would make it look easy.

I love this work... It's FUCKING SICK. Just want to throw that out there so I don't have that bottled up inside for my ENTIRE LIFE! lol. I love the armour and padding detail, also the cloak and cloth.

Magnificent piece of art! LotR is always a source of inspiration!
110 mins of tutorial... that sounds like there should be good how-to tips on it (most video tutorials are speed painting that don't help at all) but 544 mb... couldn't you divide it in parts? I think if I try to downloadit it may take me for ever...

Finally i got the time to watch the video.
GREAT!
The whole time i thought 'that is the way i want to be able to draw/paint sometime'. Not doing lines and coloring it, but painting and refining all the time. I hope i learned something (beside the all time lesson - i need to practice, practice, practice...)
I really enjoyed the video, your nice comments and the evolution of this fine pictures.
Thanks.

Sounds good man, I'll send you them sometime. Appreciate the compliments as well, glad you enjoyed the vid.
Also for the question below. Yea as I mentioned in the vid, most of the brushes I used throughout the tutorial I didn't create personally. Just picked them up from various artists that share their brush packs.

xyellowxflowerx [2009-09-16 20:20:34 +0000 UTC]
Okay I've watched the full video now It was really great to see the whole process of how you work. I picked up a lot of tips from it like flipping the page so you can see mistakes, I never would have thought of that before. You covered a lot of the questions I was going to ask in the video
1 I do have though is how you blend the colours. I try using the smudge and blur tools but they don't really look that great. Any suggestions for that? Also do you just collect your brushes that you don't create from websites and stuff?
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this, it's been so helpful
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Peter-Ortiz In reply to xyellowxflowerx [2009-09-18 00:58:39 +0000 UTC]
As always appreciate the feedback and compliments, glad it was able to prove helpful
Blending colors is actually something I had a lot of trouble with in the beginning, and yea as you mentioned the smudge/blue tool doesn't really work to well. I'm finding it a little hard to explain in words though(sorry x.x). I'll probably send ya an image sometime later of a step-by-step process I use to blend colors, and hopefully that may help ya a bit more.
As for the brushes, yea I usually pick up various brush-packs from some of the professional artists that share what brushes they use with other artists. Then overtime I've just picked and choose brushes that I liked to create my own little brush set. Once in a while though I'll go ahead and create my own if I'm looking for a specific effect.

No problem
That would be very helpful, thank you
Yeah that's cool. I should definatly look around more for brush sets, some of those you used looked really useful. I've tried to make a couple myself too which is always fun heh.
Thanks for answering my questions, I'm really looking forward to the next tutorial. Thank you again for creating them

I don't think I've really seen you submit any artwork I don't like, and this is definitely no exception. I haven't watched the entire video yet, but seeing the creative process thus far has been very interesting to me XD! This is awesome! I don't really have much feedback to give on that endeavor however, no ideas lol x.x! But here's some feedback in general - KEEP IT UP!!! !!!
