Description
This is an oil painting from a photographer's self portrait (Santina). I found it on Deviantart and asked her permission to use the image. It was such an enigmatic look... not sure if she was sad, thoughtful, lonely or amused. Her expression had me captivated for ages.The original photograph: [link]

wow... I've never understood how hard it was to make a realistic human in oil painting,... now IM trying to paint a female realistically,.. and with a foreshortening stance none the less,... ( Im kind of ambitious when it come to experimentation) and I now truly understand the complexity of oil painting. I admire you.

It's interesting. The contrast of foci you have created in the picture I think are what really draw me in the most. As an avid lover of details, I like that you were able to capture all the cracks and spindly lines in the hand, even to the point of creating the dusky shadow beneath the fingernails. While I would normally be a little disappointed in the lack of detail in the irises, I think I actually appreciate that they are themselves somewhat blank. In this manner I feel that it would be too much to look at and/or appreciate at one time. Sure, it may be called a blank look, but I like to think that it allows the focus to come on the hand and hide the eyes. Feh! I think I'm just making stuff up at this point. Regardless, wonderful picture and I'm glad I got to see it. Congrats on the daily deviation!

This is such a powerfully emotional portrait, I like that it is up to the viewer to decide what emotion that is. The details in this are breath-taking, I thought this was a photo when I first saw it! I am in love with the atmosphere of this painting

How long did it take you?

It's hard to say. I paint in layers and when the layer is touch dry I work over it. So, it took about 3 weeks, but in real time it took about 30 hours.

I am moving more in this direction. I usually do figures, but I love to capture emotion.
