Description
sometimes the monsters don’t exist in horror novels.sometimes they reside inside your skin
consuming your air,
smiling a knowing smile
while staring at the world around them through your eyes.
i didn’t mean to be the big bag wolf,
just as much as you didn’t intend to be little red.
nobody asked our permission before they made an example out of us.
dark desires manifesting themselves until they occupied the suit i wore,
straightening out the lapel in just the right manner.
slicked back the hair to appear as though they belonged.
i smell you and i taste you, precious.
and you slipped under the demon’s spell without a moment’s hesitation.
you called me rumpelstiltskin,
and, in return, i stole from you more than your firstborn child.
you saw me as prince charming,
when you should have seen the troll underneath the bridge
attempting to lure you close enough to the water’s edge
to drag you into the depths with me.
you came up for oxygen.
you flailed around and gasped for breath.
and i simply laughed at you,
whispering in your ear that the game had just begun
and would be coming to an abrupt end.
want to go for a ride?
i am more than the thriller
you keep on the table beside your bed,
filled with fanged demons you lust after in secret
when you cross your legs and dream about
decadent devils dressed in lace.
even if that sort of thing excited you -
truly held you in erotic throes while i consumed your lifeblood
and promised you unknown pleasures through the
bite marks inflicted on your flesh -
you erred in trusting me to keep my promises.
pacts with the devil always have a price.
sometimes the monsters don’t drip blood on your living room carpet
from the hatchet they carry with the mask concealing their identity.
sometimes the monsters don’t ask your permission
before they possess both their host and their prey.
sometimes you look me in the eyes and think you might have found
a refuge from the tired life you lead.
so sorry to disappoint you, pet.
i only collect souls.
and yours is next on my list.

What fun fairy tale references. Reminds me of the lyric "Enter all the monsters, let us twist another fairy tale" by AFI.
Brilliant work.

Oh, Peter, that was beautiful.
You described it perfectly.
The ending was just the icing on the cake.

i dont know why i like this so much, i just do. something about it just reaches out for me. i guess everyone has a dark side, maybe thats why im drawn to it. a change from the romantic poetry that you have been writing but i think this piece is almost more 'touching' (for lack of a better word right now), but then it may just be the effect that it had on me
whether romantic pieces or dark pieces like this, always look forward to more of your work

I believe that horror is a strong parallel to the fears we face in real life, and that horror in of itself is a way to coming to terms with our own darkness and the world around us.
A dark side of you, Peter, but a true one...
