Description
silenceas two sets of eyes
capture one another
locked within a stare,
they linger
one beat
two beats
three beats of their hearts
what is it about the girl?
why are her lips that shade of red?
why do her eyes possess
that sort of glint
that usually lock men
with their seductive wiles
yet in hers
it seems as though
he won't be complete
unless those eyes cradle him
within that look
from this point
into eternity
what is it about the boy?
what slab of marble
did the master crafter
fashion his physique from?
why does he continue to stare?
and why can't she look away?
who gave his mouth
permission
to turn upward in a smile
especially like that
in that teasing manner
that demands
she smile back.
one beat
two beats
three beats more
until the decision
becomes that much harder
to make
who says hello first?
which ego folds
underneath the cumbersome
pressure
of attraction
if she says hello first
he might think her
an easy conquest
if he says hello first
she might think him
needy and weak
the chess match
lobbying for checkmate
without surrendering
the prized piece
and so
they both
look away
two sets of legs
with feet that move
in the opposite direction
with each pace
the other too afraid
to turn around
and end
the stalemate.
in some
alternate reality
they both pivot
and look at one another
saying hello in unison
exchanging the formalities
of greetings, small talk
the weather
the abbreviated biography
that leads into the longer tale
they add another chapter to.
for now, however
they quickly walk away
in this reality
swallowed once again
by the frantic world
around them.
the city becomes
the backdrop
for another set of strangers
left only with the
lingering memory
of their
unfulfilled
forbidden
gaze

Oh my! And here I thought this was going to go somewhere else... but I followed along willingly anyway. One bit of laughter, was at the line what slab of marble I wondered amusedly if she'd settle for something crafted out of butter. Ah the price of good eating, old age and one drink too many. lol.

This poem kind of reminds me of my favorite exerpt;
"When I told you that I didn't want you, it was the very blackest kind of blastphemy."
-Edward Cullen
--New Moon
---Stephenie Meyer
once again Peter... beautifully written

You should read the books. They're very good. Your vocabulary is probably much higher than that of the book's (not to say that the vocabulary is to be desired). But that aside, they're quite a magnificent little trio. The first book is called Twilight. I highly reccomend it.
And my words are only that of fact, they shouldn't be thanked.

Hmm. . . I shall have to look for Twilight, then. Thank you for the recommendation.
Ah, I like to thank you fine folks either way. The artist is never secure in their artistry and this goes for poets as well. But still, you are kind enough to encourage. And I do appreciate that.

Would you lie to us? No. Yourself? Yes
I like how it shows what could have happened had they been brave enough to just speak to each other.

"Oh yes. . . I'm the great. . . pretender. . . "
I am the master at lying to myself, rest assured.
I wished something more than the typical response. Guy meets girl. Girl meets guy. They fall in love and go onward to their 2.5 children and white picket fence. What of the ones that allow such a thing to slip through their fingers? I thought it a little different, whatever the case.
Not all of us receive our fairytales.

ooooooh...I really like this. A tiny slice of two lives that could have gone so many ways...
adn the images you create are, as ever, magnificent.
especially loved this section:
"who gave his mouth
permission
to turn upward in a smile
especially like that"
Genius, as we've all come to know, expect, and love.

Something my wife once said to me.
"Did I give you permission to grin at me like that?" She smiled while saying it and attempted to be vexed with me over whatever frustration I had caused her at the moment. Failed miserably. The line has remained with me ever since.
You are too kind to me, sir. Thank you for the compliment.
