Description If I'd have known what would happen
After I let you walk away
I would have never said those words to you.
I would have never let you leave
If I would have seen the years to follow
Play out before my eyes.
If I would have been afforded the movie
The picture show of words and actions
Effects following causes
Newton's law of motion imposed upon
A man and a woman in love.
I wouldn't have dared speak to you
The way that I spoke to you, love.

For I live in the shadow of those words
Day by day.

Day by day
There is nothing but
The flickering ghost
Of your presence haunting me.
Day by day
I only see that moment.
That final conversation
With all its pitiful ignorance
Of time, space
Life, the universe
Everything
All the stupidity
Of a man
Who had given up
Too soon.

I live in the shadow of your presence
Unable to touch the intangible
Day by day.

If I would have known
The stars would have become duller
In the midnight sky they inhabit
And the world would have tilted from its axis
That slight millimeter
Just enough to throw my planet
Out of alignment.
I would have sooner prayed to become mute
Than to speak the lines
Written in the script for me to say.
If I would have known what was to take place
In the next act; the next scene
Read ahead in the script.
I wouldn't have dared speak to you
The way that I spoke to you, love.

For I reside in the chill of the evening
Night by night.

Night by night
I feel the brush
Of a ghost's lips
Upon mine
Waking only to find smoke
When I open my eyes
I sense the emptiness
And longing
The absence of a piece
To the simple puzzle that was
You and me.
Two parts of a whole
Rent apart by
My words.

I live in the shadow of your presence
Unable to touch the intangible
Night by night.

Each breath I take
Each minute I exist
Each night and day
I find myself saying,
If only I would have known.

Your words speak volumes my friend.. Some lyrics of a song..I am not sure if your familiar with them....

You were the treasure in my hand
You were the one who always stood beside me
So unaware I foolishly believed
That you would always be there
But then there came a day
And I turned my head and you slipped away...[link]

Your words reminded me of this song...I hope you enjoy..

I'd not heard that song before. So true to the sentiment.
I must make it a point to locate more of Ms. McEntire's music. She has quite a bit of conviction behind her words.

Thank you for the favorite on this piece as well, Sabrina.

oh, i absolutely love this! i can hear it in my head like a song. the melody is unspeakable, i dont know how to describe it. it's slow, but fast, happy, but melancholy. and hopeful. always a hint of hope.

This poem was absolutely beautiful! it literally almost brought tears to my eyes. the way you worded it was amazing. We always look back and wonder "what if", and "if i would have known then what i know now"....so many regrets...its tough but it's those things that make us grow as human beings. thanks for sharing this wonderfully written piece.

And another puzzle shape begins to emerge:
All the stupidity
Of a man
Who had given up
Too soon.

What did Peter give up on, I ask myself. Acceptance? By people not worthy of giving it or withholding it, I wonder. Did the happiness of four people truly teeter on so shallow a need? Lord I hope not.

I gave up on believing I could continue to protect them.
Several things led to such a conclusion. Erroneous, just the same.

I've never known you to doubt your skills before. It must have been some very daunting things to make you feel that way.

I suppose you could call it an existential crisis of sorts. Coupled with a very taxing excursion. I will tell you about it soon.

So many things in your life
That you are bound to regret
Why didn't I do that?
Why didn't I do this?
So many chances you lost
That you'll never forget
Why didn't I make it?
Why didn't I take it right there?
The loneliest words you will ever know
If only-if only it was so
The emptiest words that there will ever be:
It could have been me. it could have been me
The loneliest words you will ever know
If only-if only it was so
The emptiest words that there will ever be:
It could have been me. it could have been me
You will have to pay for it later
If you don't get it when its going for free
Believe me -! believe me -!

If only....::soft sigh::Wonderful imagery! I am there. I feel it...taste it...hear it. Another master work!
