Description hurried footsteps scramble
missing a beat or two
with the flesh upon
a would-be victim prickling
she senses the shadow lurking

not seeing, not hearing
just knowing
the ankle twists
the discordant rhythm interrupted
by a spill upon the pavement

she never should have walked this way

strange things, they say
lurk within the city streets
when day gives way to dusk
frantic eyes race to discover
what lies in wait for her

deathly silent
no response; the presence gone
or so she thinks
rising to her feet again
swallowing a nervous heart

she never should have walked this way

her gaze shifts
just as her feet attempt
to establish a pace again
a hand slides underneath
the folds of her coat

a set of car keys
emerging slowly from within
her breath; steam rising
intermingling with
the chilly evening air

she never should have walked this way

suddenly, she stops
her head turns, mind racing
did she just hear something?
a misplaced footstep?
shoes scuffing in the distance?

afraid to turn around
still, she pivots
regarding the dark alleyway
the vacant city street
fire escapes and buildings

she never should have walked this way

it's as she turns around
that she sees him standing there
blocks the way of escape
her mind goes dizzy
quickly, he takes her in his arms

the pulse that races calls
to the cunning predator
smelling more than perfume;
a mortal fragrance upon her neck.
he smiles, revealing pointed teeth

she never should have walked this way

her screams becoming useless
they fall upon deaf ears
quieted by the hand
that covers her mouth and
the fangs inside her neck

the melody of the macabre
fading with her transient pulse
she cries no more as she falls limp
within the predator's arms.
her final thought becomes a eulogy.

she never should have walked this way

Powerful. This is the vampire I know. Excellently written. She never should have walked this way indeed... what a fitting last line.

Her experience is eerily familiar... an unfortunate end. Nice work.

I love it!
I can feel the fear oozing out of it...
I love the twist in perspective, it's as though we're using the victim's eyes instead of the vampire's, but in fact it's the exact opposite...
But most of all I like the tension you managed to build...
Very, very good poem.

Very good! I am pleased you were pleased with it, Morgane.
I have planned to pen another in a similar tenor. For now, I thank you for the favorite.

Oh, it pleases me immensely that you're pleased by the fact I was pleased with this poem, Peter.
I'll be patient and wait, and of course you're welcome.

...with my being pleased. tsk tsk

You need to continue the continuation of feeling pleased. It's highly addictive and pleasant, so please...

Mea culpa, you are correct.
I am pleased that you pleasantly amended the pleasure of the chain of pleases that commenced with your being pleased.

Well you made me pleasantly giggle, but I lost count of the pleases, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to break this chain. Alas, life is cruel.

Thank you for your kind words.

No stake this time. After all, I was one of the people who encouraged you to write on such a topic. And boy did you take up the challenge! I'm faving it. Immediately. Umm, right after I get out my keys and slip into my car as quickly and quietly as possible.

Memories. Right, Denise?
You were one of the finer conquests, by far.

Thank you for the favorite. I am delighted it earned me a stay of execution. I hardly wished to vex you past your current level of consternation with me, after all, so I knew I best make my breach of promise a good one.

You do manage to get away with all sorts of misdeeds and broken promises, don't you? Robin is right: You have been allocated more than your share of charm.

It's been a matter of great consternation to Master Robin himself. He can never seem to remain vexed with me for long. Which makes him even more pissed off in the process.

Those are my favorite lines! Walking the dank streets of the Quarter...yes...I sense him there.

I should like to visit there someday.

The Quarter is " home" to me in a way I cannot explain, except to say that I know that I lived there in another life.

You remind me much of a woman who led a coven I once resided in. That timeless whimsy mixed with an ageless soul. Wise, yet fanciful. I can see you strolling through the Quarter in another place and time.
