Description a solitary man strolls in
greeted by the background noise
of idle chatter
amongst the patrons of
a coffee shop
somewhere on broad street
somewhere near a college
some place he once knew
when he beheld the world
through younger, inexperienced eyes

strange how it looks
the same as it had before

another set of people
to replace the set of faces
he came to expect before
yet they all appear to have
exactly the same vexations
preoccupations with coffee orders
that mask the complexity of their lives
in some attempt to ask
the barista
to make everything right again

one person may ask for a latte
when they are truly asking
for escape from mediocrity
from the hamster wheel ritual
that has him working far more than he sleeps
and dreaming far less than that
stuck in an endless cycle
of caffeine, cigarettes, and regret
he pays the cashier
and walks out the door

another one, a more complicated order
a more complicated life behind her eyes
everything meticulous
a place for everything
and everything in its place
with borderline paranoia
that if the right amount of
happiness, sugar, and cream
are not present
she might realize something more
about herself
she might lose control
somehow
she pays the cashier
and walks out the door

a final patron
with nothing superlative to offer
he asks the barista for a suggestion
because he's run out of options
and needs another addiction
needs another one to guide him
somewhere beyond the coffee counter
and into the decisions
he can't seem to make by himself
he receives that spiritual guidance
that moment of bliss that might make
the pieces all fit together
properly
then he pays the cashier
and he walks out the door

foolish mortal world
why do you lose yourself
in complicated orders
and complicated lives
days in the sun
nights under the stars
with more knots in your fabric
than you can seem to unwind
the perspective of years
staring back upon
the perspective of immediacy
and yet you act as though
you possess immortality yourselves

the days are shorter
and the nights are more tenuous
than you can begin to imagine
and yet here i sit
the solitary man
the same as you
after all

I love how every order matches with the person's life and then you go in and make your own comment on this. As for myself, I'll take my sugar with coffee and cream.

I loved the ending of this one. "Oh wait, here I sit, with a coffee... just having paid the cashier, and looking for something myself.... never mind."

Absolutely amazing. *sighs* Alas, I feel as though I write the same comment every time.
Allthewhile, it would be sompletely asinine for me not to favorite this piece. This truley touched me.
What I find funny is that I tried so hard to match myself with any of these three people, but came up with something entirely different.
Ah, well. Brilliant Peter... just as always.

The comment is always appreciated regardless. Thank you for taking the time.
I am curious as to what you came up with.

I'm not quite sure to what I came up with to be honest, a mixture of the three possibly?
I think I'm more of a 'decaf late'. My life is dreadfully uneventful, and all good things somehow escape my grasp.
That probably sounded a tad bit emo
Nonethematter, the peice truley was brilliant. I think it was my second favorite of yours.

I understand how life can appear that way, rest assured.
Thank you once again. I shall make note of that. The feedback helps in many ways.

You're welcome ^^ That and I am very partial towards poems about coffeeshops. They are a wonderful place to observe people.

The entire canvas of the human experience seems painted there. I quite enjoy them when I need to think a bit and wish a warmer atmosphere.

Yes definitely. [link] I've been known to write about such places myself

Well, not a coffeeshop admittedly. A pub, but the places are very similar when it comes to observing others.

Pubs are good for that as well, yes. I tend to eschew them mostly due to bad memories, but have known to visit one or two on occasion.

Can't say I've been to many pubs XD But the few times where I've been to one it was pretty nice, though I guess having good friends help. This poem was based on a real pub that I went to though, while I was in France.

I wondered if it was the same shop. Dare I admit I saw myself in one of those patrons? And I don't even visit coffee shops! I did truly appreciate the perspective and the insights. Even if they made me cringe a tiny bit.

I do hope you see, though. . . the solitary man turned it upon himself in the end. Pretentious bastard that he is. Sitting alone, wasting the same time seeking the same solace. For what it's worth, I believe I am that last fellow right now.

I venture back there often, when in the neighborhood. My longer walks during the winter; when it gets dark sooner.

The fairer sex is an Achilles heel and the lot of you know the power of fragrance far too well for my own good.

I need my beloved. These days are getting harder and harder to weather as a solitary man.

I've heard a bit of something.
There is a voice inside my head, in fact. Sounds like the chorus of angels. Whispering sweet songs into my soul.

The smiles remain, although at times they have different tenors. Bittersweet, delighted, solemn, whimsical. Still a smile. A long-lost friend.
