I have the same problem, friend. Vista was the only thing that came with my laptop as well. At least, as NightVagabond stated, we're still able to write with it!
A lovely background, too. Makes the whole thing better, right?

^_^ I like hehe and it seems, these days, everyone is using AVG - yay! Norton and McAfee will go out of business for their over-priced software...

Peter has a Japanese themed wallpaper?! How bizarre! How strange and novel! Truly though, it is lovely. I'm glad it's not in person with me. Lads do get touchy, touchy around sharp glittering things, don't we.
As for your Vista, I have little comment. I don't have any issues with my 'difference engine' aside from the little jolt I receive from the Tesla Coil now and then.

you got stuck with vista too???
i'm SO sorry, peter.
i have empathy for you - i'm stuck with the blasted program as well. :\

vista is the spawn of satan. i loathe it, but we make due, right?

HoldingBackTears In reply to peterdawes [2008-09-28 19:01:51 +0000 UTC]
actually, i think vista could quite easily overthrow satan if it wanted to.
but i suppose making due is the only thing possible.

i'm not going to go near Vista until they've fixed 99.9% of the bugs.

i did not wish to go anywhere near vista. but it was the only option on this laptop. *sighs*

Fooled me, right down to the display case. Gorgeous wood, that. Looks like cherry? Love it.

it is stunning. mine is mounted with wooden claws holding it, almost like talons attached to the wall. *grins* next to that is a japanese oni mask with two sai running through it.
detect a theme?

But, the wooden placard behind yours -- isn't it carved cherry like this one? I could've sworn when you showed it to me it was. And you have a case for it, ne? Or does memory fail me?

peterdawes In reply to DarcKnyt [2008-09-28 05:33:45 +0000 UTC]
mine is sheathed, unlike this one. the placard behind it is a lighter brown color and there is no case. i like to be able to take it down at will, although this requires more cleaning.
i hardly weep to do so, though. any chance to handle it again and dote a bit on an old friend.
(there are some moments i miss the old days. very distinct moments.)

*laughs* please, share your list with me, dear friend. perhaps finding a worthy victim will assuage my conscience a bit when i run them through.

OH, Peter ... don't get me started.
Okay, I guess I didn't remember the display you've got as well as I thought. But I did remember the placard. Does yours have kanji on the blade, or a pattern? That I don't remember.
And when are you and Michael coming to Chicago? That would rock. And I'd get you that list then for sure.

It would be lovelier to see the sword close up enough to feel the folds.

beautiful, aren't they?
almost makes me itch to take mine down from the wall and swing it around a bit.

oh please don't just swing it about,
swords like that are works of art and should only be in works of art.
the art of war,
the art of peace.

once, i was an artist. once, the sword was my paintbrush and the world my canvas. all i have now are the moments spent rending bamboo and practicing forms. but i still fancy the feel of a blade in the grip of my hands, conducting my own silent orchestra.

personally, I would like to have learned more than I did.
but I love the feel of practicing forms with my bo too.

peterdawes In reply to y0urstalker [2008-09-28 05:30:23 +0000 UTC]
the bo is a very underrated weapon. i have been meaning to learn a bit more with one.
i also have a pair of sai. do not know nearly enough about them, but i am itching to practice.

y0urstalker In reply to peterdawes [2008-09-28 05:33:24 +0000 UTC]
oh, sai are fun, they're like swordbreakers but more useful.
Using them is similar to using circus knives but so much more sophisticated.

*nods* my background with knives has been an asset to me. some distinct differences, but a point of connect either way.

y0urstalker In reply to peterdawes [2008-09-28 06:12:40 +0000 UTC]
well you know that twirl thing you do with a circus knife before you throw it (thereby giving it more accuracy and power but makes it easier to be interrupted in the throw), well that's very useful in balancing a sai except that you regrip at the end of the circle instead of let go.
