Description funny how
the sands of time shift
the best laid plans
of mice and men
are oft lead astray

funny how the friendships
we cherish within the present
melt into the past
with the ease of summer
slipping into autumn
the tides changing
with the phases of the moon.

you were a stone
a rock on whom i could depend.
epitomized the ideal of friendship
life is not the romance novels
i find upon the shelf
still, i did not realize
that misconceptions
would erode the stone i thought
i could depend upon

capricious turning of the seasons

so easily led astray
the double lives we live
the faces we present
and the ones we hide away.
so easily the masks come off
the actors reveal their hand
and the play becomes a eulogy
for a friendship that once was
but is no longer.

you were a stone.
and i, a friend.
but now, the rock sinks to the bottom
the depths of an abyss
unfathomable and unsearchable
the 'what once was' meets 'that which is'
and both part ways before the sunset

to the one i once knew
so easily led astray
shift your eyes toward the horizon
as my silhouette fades from view
the hand held aloft to offer
a parting wave to you.

This reminds me of all the friends I've lost because of my moving or their going to different schools. Heh, I still remember their names and faces and wonder if they've changed...

Very well written, very nice and oh so sad. And this a commission? You're quite talented on all fronts.

I have only a handful of friends I count very dear to my heart. I have lost a few in the past, drifiting apart, or growing up..Whatever it was, it was always painful. Wonderful words again Peter. I am amazed that no matter what sentiment is behind your writing, the words are always true and heartfelt..

I loved it Peter. It made me cry - these very events have just recently occued upon myself.
I noticed one typo - instead of "often", you put "oft"... unless you meant it to be that way, then I would be making a fool of myself. X]

Ah, yes, worn stones. Makes me recall friends of seasons past. They can never be real friends again; too much has happened, but one yearns for the time before, when all was whole and seemingly immutable.

Quite the sentiment I hoped to capture. I am glad the poem evoked those thoughts.

Losing friends is a terrible thing... especially if they let you down.

Quite so.
Although I have so few friends, they are loyal ones. This was penned for those not as fortunate as I.

Master Robin is not the only one who reads books.
Thank you for the favorite, dear Lindsay.
