Description streetlights
and cigarette smoke
nights are made of these.
where warm bodies caress
in the meeting of strangers
within a bar, a nightclub;
a late night coffee shop.
my shoes slid against
damp pavement
the grit of city streets
with eyes wide;
eager to take in
the world surrounding him.

it wasn't so long that
the technicolor daydream
of urban neon and
well-dressed individuals
surrounded us together.
when the body melting
against mine
smelled like sweat and
moved like liquid
to the backbeat
and the bass lines
of a band performing
metropolitan hymns
for the masses.

however, all that exists
is streetlights
and cigarette smoke
in the confines of a city
i am both connected to
and hopelessly divorced from.
you seemed to be
the only other person
who understood it with me.

and so
i say to you, my dear
thank you
for the memories
of late nights, drinks,
and the passion
that often followed
our excursions
to the centre
of the city
in the night.

i still walk
solitary
across concrete pathways
waiting for you.

It's been a while since you produced a poem like this, though what the difference is to what has recently been written I can't quite put my finger on. Nevermind, I enjoyed it very much

I am glad you enjoyed it.
It had been a while since I attempted something with more of a solitary urban feel. Perhaps that is it? Whatever the matter, thank you, dear.

I am afraid that I am short for words.
This was beautiful. Full of imagery and emotion.
I loved it.

If it's as good as you say it is... I just might have to look into it.

I might be a relic lost in a by-gone era. But I fancy it just the same.

The era hes nothing to do with a song's quality. :]]

Your voice has never been stronger than in this poem, Peter. I can hear and FEEL you in each stanza. My special favorite: "...metropolitan hymns
for the masses..."

Excellent!

Why thank you, dear Denise, and an extra word of thanks for the favorite. You are far too kind to me.
City streets, cigarettes, and wistful memories seem to be the current status of my life. I suppose the adage is true; you write what you know.

I could see you wandering it the dark, the tip of your cigarette glowing, as I read that piece.

What an interesting image. Coincidentally, I have been attempting to find an appropriate image for my website. I think I like that idea.

the cover is worth a listen. a novel way of updating the song without losing its original energy.

Possibly one of my favorite pieces from you in the short time that I have been watching you, my friend. *Smiles* Exquisitely sensual, punctured with urban awareness and strung through with passion. An interesting portrait of the city, into the bargain.

thank you kindly. late night in the city always seems to have a latent sensuality to it. enough to remind one when they are alone.

thank you for the favorite, friend.
