Description Please note the front view of the animal is shown with its mouth open.

A secondarily aquatic "used-to-be-flying animal" - hence the "penguin" association.

It doesn't move like penguins do, at least not on dry land, where it is more reminiscent of a small seal rather than penguin, as it does not walk upright but rather drags itself along like a sea turtle.
former wings and "rudder limbs" no longer act in flying through air, but they are excellent for water movement.

This animal is rather controversial, it is a true "movement artist" in water, very swift, agile and elegant when chasing after small "squish", usually in groups, but it's rather clumsy on dry land.

These animals are a group of rather primitive neognathids (almost all advanced neognathids - the most recent lineage of "vertebrates" [link] are viviparous) which only survive on one long-separated continent where they fill many niches, and the only widely distributed forms are the flyers including this lineage of secondarily flightless marine forms.

Anyway. They lay eggs but take care of their young, and also feed them with a mushy substance the female produces, so they're somewhat similar to monotremes (platypi, echidna) on earth.

The males sport brightly colored beaks and they perform displays to atract females (which don't have colorful beaks but are not much different from males in terms of external anatomy), and they choose a different mate each year.

They protect their eggs and young from predators and either male and female share the responsibility of incubating the eggs, one of the parents goes hunting and they exchange their positions.

The female stays with the youngsters onshore after they hatch, the male goes hunting to feed both of them, him and the mother. The mother then secretes a special mushy substance in crop-like throat pouch and feeds the young.

Thank you! I wanted to make it more adapted to water than a penguin is. I think it would move on land like a sea turtle.

P.S. the link doesn't work

Yeah. You have to make a space before writing something which is not a part of the link itself in order to make DA recognize it is not a part of the link itself...

I love the detail you are going into regarding the lifestyle of these animals... it does need a proper name though

You're right Nick. I'm thinking about it, but names have always been a bit problematic for me...

I like this one!

What's the land habitat like? Icy, like a real penguin's, or warmer? Do they live around reefs or more sandy areas underwater?

PeteriDish In reply to Adiraiju [2012-03-31 09:52:59 +0000 UTC]

I think of them as of more warmth-liking creatures. For breeding, they would drag themselves up a sandy beach, much like sea turtles, but they would care of their young.

You have som really cool designs, it's a shame that most of them are so simple sketches.:<

PeteriDish In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2012-03-31 09:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, most of them are sketches, but a) I enjoy sketching/doodling and b) it's the fastest way how to develop new ideas and share them
But as you have seen, I am also sculpting those animals, but I have "too many" of them now and it will take time to do all of them this way (which is what I want to end up with eventually) but I tend to save sculpting for times when I have no ideas for more sketches

KingsOfEvilArt In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-31 11:09:45 +0000 UTC]

I make many sketches too but do not really like to show them until I make them into serious works

PeteriDish In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2012-03-31 11:14:41 +0000 UTC]

well I try to put up as much as I can, especially so people can give me suggestions. It might be just a simple sketch, but someone still can comment an incredibly cool idea there, so that's mainly why i'm doing that, and also to not make people think I'm dead...

KingsOfEvilArt In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-31 11:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the suggestions can be really useful. If you wish always point out in my works things that you think I could alter. But still most of the concepts here comes from my crazy mind

Epic flying penguin= badass

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Cowburger13 [2012-03-30 21:11:27 +0000 UTC]

well it doesn't fly any more, it's "secondarily flightless" just like penguins on earth - it lost the ability of flight to be better suited for aquatic lifestyle.

crab spider (funny how confusing english names are, huh? we call the spider crab "japanese gigacrab" (or that's what the czech name would look when directly trranslated in english) and we call the "crab spider" a "running spider" - not such a fitting name considering it's an ambush predator that uses stealth as it's primary weapon huh?

here is a 4-legged tadpole if you want to try it, but it has "radial" parts too
[link]
a hermit crab:
[link]
an old scorpion [link] (you don't have to worry about the mouth in the lower left corner, you can fold all that section like if it was a fish base with each of the long flaps being part of the claws
and a longhorn beetle: [link]
