Ahh- nothing more beautiful than crisp white snow! I love photos of plants peeking through the snow. These kinds of pieces are so great at showing that abstract concept of "change" in a visual way, which I really love. There are a lot of great textures here, as well. The shadows in this photo work well to add some interest, and overall this is a very visually interesting photo.

I do, however, feel like there isn't a real focal point here. My eye is drifting and not sure what it wants to look at, and the angle could be more interesting. Always experiment with creative angles that aren't just what you would see normally while walking through your yard- get up close and personal with your subject! I feel like if you got this shot from down on the ground looking across the snow bank (bug's eye view), the viewer would be drawn in to looking at one particular element of the photo and really have the contrast of the snow and grass peeking out from it.

Overall, experiment with angles! You have the eye for picking out different subjects, but you always want to make things as visually interesting and focused as possible. Keep your viewer interested. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the critique, and the (mostly) lovely comments! To answer your main concerns with this photo, I shot this picture looking straight down, as it was the patterns and shadows which made this abstract image an abstract. If I had gotten down at eye level, the shadows would not have read well, as they would have stretched out and gone soft focus. Also, as an abstract, there is no real focal point. If you look at Jackson Pollock's masterpieces, you'll notice there is no central focal point - it's the patterns and colors that matter with abstracts.

Certainly! It's an excellent piece- and you definitely have a point with the whole abstract thing. I suppose honestly it's just a matter of opinion- personally I like to know exactly whether something was intended as an abstract piece or not instantly. With a scene like this, personally I would get closer or something to take the viewer away from "reality"......am I making any sense??

Overall, nice work =] I just personally feel that this doesn't so much portray a "message" or feeling as much as I think it could, if you know what I mean.
