Description
Hi.I have free day today. There is ugly weather outside, girlfriend is study, so PC and 3ds max is one of few options. (I wonder what summer we have this year. There is raining outside. Actually we've had rain since begining of summer. My country suffers from floods.) Due to minimum time I chose to make this popular gun.
Model is very simple. It can be done in minutes. Most time I spent by making textures in Photoshop. It took about 4 or 5 hours at all. Or 3 movies on backgound
It Could happen, there are some differences in comparison with real gun. I didnt follow every details so pls, dont be rigolous.
Bye.

Try getting a program that allows projection painting, it speeds texturing up so much wouldn't believe!

I can see the differences and this is not a problem, but this pistol form is typical form of Colt 1911A1 but I see Smith&wesson logo on the Gun,Do you like much that brand?? Whatever it is,incredibly perfect modeling labor for a 3D model which "done in minutes"!!You must be really a 3DSMAX master Peter,Congrats to you again

Even tho you say it's a simple model there has always been a special something about the old M1911s that just makes it special. I realy do like the model and I'm impressed you can do something like this in minutes. How long have ya worked with 3Ds max?

only model itself can be done in minutes. its easy if you got experience. but preparation for texturing and rendering need whole session.
dont know how long. maybe 6 years.

Oh wow, 6 years. The experiance shows, especialy in your newer work. I'm quite interested since our school deals with modeling, animations, designing and so forth and 3D modeling is something I will have to do as the year progresses. How dificult is it to start with 3D modeling?

on first glance, not bad.
on closer inspection, it becomes clear that just about everything is at least slightly wrong.
don't take this too personally - I know you've never held one and that it is done as a quickie - as such it is pretty good, easily good enough to be used in videogames and anything but close-up renders
it is just that I've been shooting this particular design for thirty-one years, so I spot such things.

dont worry I always take crit positively. This was 1 session work on lowpoly object. If you want to make really realistic object then you hae to make highpoly object which is not easy to make and it take more time as well. lowpoly objects are not suitable for close renders as they always look "blocky" little bit. and Probably you noticed more things that dont match real 1911. Its because I had no direct contact with real 1911 only few photos. At least rear section is wrong I guess.

as I said, I understand the limitations under which you produced this model, and within those limits it is top-notch work. It'd pass inspection in anything but a "hero" or showpiece render for 99% of viewers - most people are not as intimately familiar with this design as I am.
for mechanisms, I usually model them as multi-part manufacturing-specifications solids models in AutoCAD and then import them when I want to render them in other applications. making something like this would try my patience in applications designed for organic modeling.

ok I respect it. Its suprised to me you make modeling in autocad. Then it has to be totally same as original. I dont know autocad but modeling in 3ds max suit me well. One more thing. 3ds max or maya definitely not programs for organic modeling. Believe me. its really hard to make something organic in it. Much more suitable program for organic is zbrush.

I haven't gotten into Z-Brush, I haven't yet mastered 3DSMax and don't want to confuse my tired old brain.
I use 3DSMax9 for organic shapes.
it is perfectly suited for this, compared to AutoCAD
and, yes - due to its precise numeric data entry, AutoCAD allows for exact mechanical models - check out my SKS for an example.
[link]
Each part was measured from the real thing, using calipers and micrometers. Each part was modeled independently, and then assembled in relation to the cartesian zero point set at the center of the bore at the face of the breech.
The model is (was, sadly... lost it) accurate to a tolerance of 0.001" down to the letters and symbols stamped into the receiver - those were modeled into the solids, not a map.

Its unbelievable. You modeled even symbols . I've been played in 3ds max for years. Thats why it comes easy to me. Right now I dont add works here often as I'm busy in work and also I have started to played in Zbrush. I can tell you that Zbrush is really much better for organic form then 3ds max. ok for me modeling mechanical parts is 3ds max enough but Its funny to work in Zbrush. Its much more sculpting then modeling actually. just check some videos on youtube to make opinion.

Oh, I've seen what people can do in ZBrush, and I glow green with envy
when I have mastered more of 3DSMax, and can afford (yet) another app I don't intend to make money with, I'll look into getting ZBrush

Alright, good job, great model. Aside from that, It's just the hammer that needs a bit of work... it seems fixed on the back of the gun rather than a actual hammer.

Huh that's odd but cool. I mean they are spot on and dude you are the fucking man,it's just and I am sure I am wrong but I thought that specific almost true to form 1911 Colt was made by SpringField armory not S&W as depicted upside down on the bottom Colt. I mean I have seen many variants. Kimber etc etc. Many use the 1911 template as it was the father of modern semi auto pistols. Don't misunderstand. I am a huge fan of your work. Just found that odd.

Smith and Wesson introduced their version of the M1911 in 2003. it is essentially a production "custom" gun.

Yep I looked it up after. I completely zoned that night. Everyone makes a damn 1911 pistol. It's just the frame and the patent ran out after John Browning died. The last gun he made was the Browning Hi Power 9mm. One of the first 15 round pistols. Besides Colt if you want an authentic 1911 .45 pistol, this will shock you but the best place is actually this company out of the Philipines. The reason being when we were over there (the USA military) we set up a weapons factory. When we left, the shit was still there so they started cranking out 1911 .45 pistols that are the cheapest price you can find but also one of the highest quality. I think it's like RockCreek or something.
