Description Concept of sci-fi energy rifle

Code name : BOX-SET.

This model I made along my previous concept – BOX-ER [link] and rendered it just now.
They are meant to be family of “box style” designs.
In this I also tried to keep simple straight lines and 90 degrees angles but give more structure inside that. This piece is set of rifle on the top and something like grenade launcher at the bottom cover in modular parts.

I did 4 pictures (All with resolution 1920x1080):

Hey
Just have a couple of simple thoughts, regarding this otherwise great piece.

Right now it looks like the gun is lying free in the box? Might be cool if the rifle was embedded in the cushion/housing?
The main picture looks like the gun is floating. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Also I'd add a tiny splash of colour to some of the text and logos on the gun, just to give it some pop.

Maybe you could also hint at different materials a bit more, like something soft for the grip etc.

Hope this is somewhat useful, looking forward to seeing more work from you!

Great work!

You are really good, no question. However, your work doesn't look very real. If you are not going for "real" or this was not 3D then I would probably consider this a masterpiece (if it were done in photoshop for instance), but to me it seems like you are going for real and I can tell this is 3D. I have seen much more realistic 3D. For that reason, I critique as such. Overall, I am very impressed, but your work looks less 3D to me and looks more like really good 2D. I think your "style" itself is unique in its own way (much unlike any I have seen before in fact), but overall the originality of this gun is not so impressive to me... If it weren't for your distinct style, my originality rating would be much lower.

Hi. Tnx for critique. I take it all.

originality: last 2 concept has been in boxy style. Therefore they are boxy. I mentioned it in description. I also dont like boxy style much. They just missed in my work so i did it. I prefer organic lines. They are much bigger fun to model it highpoly then few boxes stick together.

Quality of 3d: Good observation mate. If the picture is realistic or not is decide by following aspects: composition of light and shadow (this is most important), reflections, material textures (those little defectiveness what real world makes) and DOF.

This picture has little amount of light and shadow. I used only 1 light. For better result I'd had to used at least 3 different lights. Unfortunately it quite increases computing time.

To bring real reflection it is good to uses HDRI, so models reflect "real world" around. This bring good portion of reality. (Model on my picture reflect only one light and black empty space around) Materials on models themself are good enough in my opinion but background material should be different. This ones improvements do not cost a lot of computing time. I just was too lazy/hurry to do it.

Textures - I did not used them at all. It just take time to prepare it.

DOF - deep of field. I know I should used this feature because it bring also additional portion of reality. I just dont like this one and on additions there is also major increase computing time.

I needed it to make it quickly and finish it.

Bye

You wanted critique eh? Very well... I just been looking through your work. I am... stunned... The detail, the overall beauty, it's really amazing. The spear tip for one is quite an art work. Makes me think: Why not make working weapons? I an bloody sure some collectors would pay dearly for these beauties... I know I would if I had the cash!

The overall design is virtually flawless. Sleek, impressive design, straightforward, and with tremendous detail (for as far as it goes on futuristic firearms).
The ideas are sound (the laser rifle is not that sound, but I think of it as a sniper/LAR (Light Assault Rifle) instead).

Darned well done, love to see a LOT more of this.

Nice skills, some people are skilled to model a 3D obj. some others to build them in reality. Would you like to give a look on my (in process) project about 40% done.

I love box guns and I also love thumb-hole style stocks. Looking at this I could easily see it as either a rail/coilgun or as an energy weapon. Either way it is a fantastic looking weapon.

The model is really nice, but I think the texture is a bit off. Altho the material looks great its too shiny like if you were in the grass the glare from the metal would definitely give you away. The optics should probably have a separate material as well.

Something to consider as the buttom front is modular would be a second trigger on the bottom side, to take it a step further you could also seperate that part of the mesh and model in the bottom rail and render out showing the module detached but in the case under the gun ( this also allows you to module additional modules like in fared for the optics, heartbeat monitor with side swing view, Xray view?). This is a sci-fi weapon it should probably have some pretty Badass attachments outside of the standard grenade launcher.

The case is a great touch but you should have a cutout for the gun to snuggly fit into.

Well done

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peterku In reply to AlanSteenhouwer [2013-07-11 07:21:40 +0000 UTC]

I also prefer something different then blocky style. Most futuristic object are blocky before:
1. They are easy to design.
2. they are easy to model
3. They are easy to produce it.

But I believe, in general, future will be curved. Curved surfaces work much better with physical forces but they are still difficult to produce it. It still cost much and production time is also longer.
