Fine work indeed, has a painterly quality your pencils.

Thanks, Rordors.
I imagine part of the painterly quality may be due to the bad scan I made.
The left side is slightly of focus, and the right side had two scans overlapping, but not quite lined up, so there's a bit of a double image in those area.

Could also be painterly because you have a load of talent too!

And crazy-david correct, I intended to type that eyes and chin were not aligned (instead of level).
Taking that one hard line off the chin removed ten years from the face.
When possible, I suggest working from five or six photos and using a primary one, the others for additional reference in choosing hair texture, deleting odd shadows and highlights, etc. that might appear in one photo.
We took different art career paths as I went from illustrator to art director, but little brother's work is outstanding.

Have you thought of posting your engravings here at DA?

I have thought about it and may start a new profile for that when I get better...just doing practise plates for now,so much to learn with graver points and the different cuts they make and then learning how to do inlays not mention the cost of tooling. This is the type of engraving I am looking to do...

This is beautiful and moving, honest- Totally admirable. Not too sure about BBD's criticisms. Really unneeded. The eyes are not level, the hat is not level, the nose is not level and the chin is not wrong!!!WTF!

Thank you, Dave.
I actually changed the chin after my brother's critique.
If you think it looks good now, and I trust your opinion, the change was for the better.

Nice job, phan-tom. Your ultra-nit picky art director brother has a couple of suggestions. It shows you're right-handed. Look at any portrait in a mirror and you'll perceive it differently. In this case, the eyes are level, but the bottom of the chin has a slope. The cheek at right is soft, but the neck and collar have more texture and a harder outline -- not a consistent combination and it makes the collar appear tight and too stark. The vertical line from nose to chin on one side is too harsh for not having any to the other side (especially since he was about 21 at the time). Even if the photo looks that way, you know it's not typical, so adjust. The far collar button has some detail, but the nearer button has none, the reverse of rules of perspective. Two things really stand out: the eyes and the shiny band in the cap. I'd tone down the band because it's not a major feature of the face. You got the forehead, eyes, nose and lips just right (cover up the rest of the image and you'll see the core of the face is strong, do the reverse and the outline areas are weaker in capturing the whole). Reach beyond the photo reference to find the person you knew. The chin is a hair too contrasty, a by-product of working from a photograph.
All that said, you know darn well that your hand is better than mine and I could not have done nearly as well. Keep pushing the envelope.

The bottom of the chin has been bothering me too.
