You can start by taking a few random letters of the alphabet, type them into google search one at a time, and chose one of the suggestions that come up(repeat process) and mix them all together.

I like the bird creature as well, the colors and the amount of anthropomorphism used.. it just adorable! <:'D
Though the other one is cute too, the design reminds me very much of stones and other minerals.

I wouldn't count the face as having human characteristics because it's your style, which is cartoony.
