Description I often wondered what JRR Tolkien would have made of the film adaptions of his LOTR trilogy.
Tolkien died in 1973, and it would be 23 years untill a New Zealand director called Peter Jackson, thought it would be 'cool' to make the trilogy into films.
It's a shame the two never met, i'm sure Tolkien would have more than a little input, and maybe the films would have been different to the ones we know and love today.
I thought that if they couldn't meet in real life, then I could bring them together on paper.
This is my fantasy art of JRR Tolkien visiting Peter Jackson on the Edoras set.

Finally, the master comes face-to-face with the disciple.

Pencils on A3, 5 hours approx

N.B. This was sold on eBay to a guy out in New Zealand. I thought i was quite fitting the the art should be drawn in England, the homeland of Tolkien, and sent to New Zealand, the homeland of Jackson.
Poetic justice indeed.

UPDATE 09/02/2012 Today this was featured on the Facebook page of theonering.net, (anyone who has the slightest inkling of Tolkien fan-base will know who these guys are) and posted on the walls of over 51,000 fans!!
I am very proud to have been recognised by these guys

Lucky guy who bought this!Β  I just love the whole concept... I've often wondered exactly the same thing, and it's wonderful to see that someone came up with a drawing of Tolkien and Peter Jackson meeting... Honestly, I think Tolkien would be thrilled about his trilogy being made into such a sensitively and professionally created film, even if he'd surely have criticisms of parts of it.Β  I know no one else could have captured the heart of this the way Peter Jackson did.Β  Thanks for sharing! β™₯β™₯β™₯β™₯

I think Tolkien would have been annoyed with the changes, but still happy that the films inspired people (like myself) to read the books (which I now love).

I'm pretty sure that if this had actually taken place, and if Tolkien were a violent man, the New Zealander would be on the floor out of frame, and the Prof. certainly wouldn't be smiling.

It would be extremely fascinating to hear the conversation between the two. I'm sure Tolkein would be extremely impressed of how the films came out. Maybe a tad annoyed by the changes to the story but I feel he would see past that as Jackson visually created Middle Earth as Tolkein described it. Also fantastic drawing!

Tolkien may have been pleased and annoyed over the omittance of certain things.
I think he would have been pleased with things like Helms Deep. For instance in the book the battle of Helms Deep is confined to just one short chapter, about half way through The Two Towers, where as Jackson made it an epic and pivetol battle for the finale of the film adaption.
Certain characters have a bigger role in the films (Arwen/Eowyn/Saruman) and others have a lesser role (Eomer/Galadriel/Celeborn/Haldir)
The Ent's attack on Isengard is not in the books at all, only the fore and aftermath, so Peter completely envisaged that.
I guess things need to be changed around to to allow the story to flow in a film to make it easier for a general audience to understand and enjoy. I think Tolkien would have understood this.
I know people were up in arms about Tom Bombadil being cut out of the Fellowship adaption, but I for one am glad he was.
Him and his wife Goldberry are just lunatics that have been hitting the Halfling's Leaf a bit too heavily

Good point you make! Yeah with Tom Bombadil I am happy they cut him out due to the fact he took away, in my opinion, away from the seriousness of the story. Granted we need some humor here and there but Jackson moved that humor to Merry and Pippen in the first film.

phantomphreaq In reply to agulhinha [2012-01-24 23:00:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Tolkien with have approved of Jackson's story restructuring, and a loss of certain characters and events. The films would be very different I think.

agulhinha In reply to phantomphreaq [2012-01-25 03:09:26 +0000 UTC]

Do you think Tolkien would say to Peter Jackson how to film the story like J.K. Rowling said to the directors in Harry Potter?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phantomphreaq In reply to agulhinha [2012-01-25 11:07:39 +0000 UTC]

I thimk he would have a had a major imput on the story work and the languages etc. But he sold the rights to the films for next to nothing because he said making these into films would be impossible.
It would have been down to jackson and New Line to do the films how they wanted.
He may not have liked the finished films, but legally he would have had no say into how they were made.
He would have been there as an advisor.

I would have put Brian Sibley at there for his work on adapting the book for the 1981 radio series (which seems to have inspired much of the adaptation for the Peter Jackson version), although he is unfortunately ugly as sin. Opposite end of the scale from your drawing skills it would seem :3

A great illustration! Very moving, and poignant. You've captured expressions with sincerity as if this moment really happened. Beautiful job. This is now featured in our galleries here:

And what's especially ironic is that Tolkien sold the film rights to LOTR for almost nothing, way-back-when, because Tolkien said that no one could ever make a film out of his complex books anyway. (Due to all the parallel timelines, creatures, scenery, etc., as I recall.) So Peter Jackson, New Line, and WETA Digital worked together to achieve what Tolkien, himself, considered impossible. Hooray for passion and technology!

Having read the out-of-print book, "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien" in its entirely, I'm pretty sure Tolkien would have frowned on the whole moviemaking process and his story's re-architecturing, etc. during his mortal life. So, it's just as well these two never met. But the posthumous collaboration of their work will outlive us all.

They may not have been friends in this world, but undoubtedly will be in the next.

I posted a link to it on Peter Jackson's Facebook wall. He occasionally goes on there to update on the Hobbit film. I really hope he sees it, or if not the person who updates the page for him and brings it to his attention. How cool would that be to have Peter Jackson comment on this work??

He'd probably say 'what on Middle-Earth have you done to my books?!. You even cut Tom Bombadil from your film!' lol

Seriously though, if Tolkien was alive today the films would probably be very different story-wise. He would still own the copyrights and may not have even granted Jackson and New Line permission to make the films.

What a horrible thought
