Charming illustration,  it makes me feel warm. Old lady's smile is great! You have captured her perfectly.

It's very nice to receive a compliment from an artist whose own work I admire so much.

Fully deserved! It's not so very easy  to draw old lady exactly right way; every little wrinkle, when displaced, could make her smile cold or mean. I know, because I did fight with it myself

a pleasant tale yes - the child looks a bit fidgety, maybe it is because of the breeze through the room, but the old woman looks on with calm acceptance - lovely

This series, what I've managed to complete so far, has given me a lot of enjoyment. I'm not sure if I relate to the girl or the old woman. I'm glad to know you liked it.

I liked Carole's comment about warm and cool - dink - opened my eyes.
And I trust you have blasted through the blocks - do you keep a journal?

phantsythat In reply to aureolin-swatch [2015-03-30 02:17:53 +0000 UTC]

I think Carole was the first who ever mentioned that aspect of my work.
I guess using warm and cool colors has become an unconscious process.

No, my only journals are drawings that stick
around in my old sketchbooks.

As usual, the wonderful balance of warm/cool
and, the intricate detail beckons us to linger
in your image - and again we're rewarded with
seeing something we somehow missed a moment
ago -
like skeletons dancing in the background

Mom (Grand-mom) looks so content on passing
her knowledge - wisdom ???  along to the young girl
- who - seems to ask the viewer if they agree that
dragons and the family dog belong together under
her dinning room table.

Just wonderful my friend

It delights me no end you like this one, Carole. You can probably tell it took some time to complete, but I was sure of the image right from the start. The skeleton, books and the scientific equipment let me play with the idea the old wise woman is both a scientist and a magician. I'm hoping one day those two fields might meet in harmony. The girl would prefer to be outside doing something else.

The dragons are clearly enjoying themselves while the dog is a a bit wary.

......the idea the old wise woman is both a scientist and a magician

that is a wonderful concept - so many images come to mind exploring it

and a Mom who wouldn't be caught dead in a dress
clearly a  woman after my own

phantsythat In reply to Cmac13 [2015-01-03 21:51:46 +0000 UTC]

I just tried to set it up as a print but I'm being told my 1024 image isn't big enough. It's a scan of the original and can't be made bigger - taking a photograph of the picture just isn't possible at the moment. Sorry, Carole, I don't know what else to do here.

I'll download it and see what I can do with my own equipment here

thanks for trying

Good. I hope you can do that. I've never put any restrictions on my work since I always know where the original is, namely, in a portfolio somewhere

Thanks, Caroline. I don't know if this story will ever see all its pictures completed but this one was especially fun to work on. The grandmother looks just a tiny bit like my own mother - except she wouldn't be caught dead in a dress
