Description Be nice, you guys. My first tutorial.

Ok, I can understand that Kaa has been the reigning example of a snake for a long time. He's got that whole hypnotic-coily-expression thing going on, and a lot of people like that. But it's been too long. It's time he was dethroned.
I give you here the tools to make a new era of snake anthros. An era where maybe, just maybe, the snakes are unique, and thick, and have some substance.

The first three steps are for those who will take the challenge and draw something unique. Steps 4 and 5 are useful to the Kaa fiends, too.

Snake photos by *Blepharopsis , who unfortunately did not reply to my note requesting to use his pictures. If they ask me to, I will swap these pictures out for something else. :3

Ooh I've drawn a snake anthro before with a similar technique. Also the making sense of where the tail is is useful I'll defiantly keep that in mind. :3

Hello, I'm trying to draw something similiar [link] only it's a Naga. I have the anatomy right, I think... I just can't find any tutorial's on scale patterns or how to draw the underbelly pattern designs. If you could help me out that would be awesome!

PharaohQueen In reply to Inuko913 [2011-07-06 23:17:34 +0000 UTC]

Hookay.
First: please note that using a traditional medium will make this harder. :/ Kudos to you for doing it, though.
First the belly.
[link] [link] [link] (references-- always have references)
You'll note that the belly scales do fall in straight lines, right down to the privates toward the end, where they tend to split into multiples starting at two. The pattern, if there is one on the belly, restarts at every scale. (So if you have stripes, they won't be perfectly symmetrical all the way down, they'll restart over and over and not be quite in synch. This may not suit your picture, and it is your option to change it.) The marks will become more in synch after the privates.

Now the rest of it. [link] [link] [link] [link]
Scales are smaller around the beginning of the neck and the tip of the tail, and get bigger near the middle. Around the eyes/mouth (which you don't need but I'll throw in anyway) they vary in size and you really need to look up a species ref. For a naga, you may want to make them smaller near the human/snake connection.
Shape varies. A diamond is classic but is a royal pain to draw. You might get away with a simple oval and some clever blending or shading. A crosshatch is simple and quick, but mine always look sloppy so I avoid it, and if your hand isn't steady or you want this to look tidy, I'd suggest you do the same.
And there's always the option of only adding scales at highlighted areas (the hips and spine for this pic). Fade them out as you would see less definition from light. This option lends itself easier to editing if you make a mistake, and you won't destroy your paper if you have to erase a whole patch.

Hope this helps!

I dunno, I kind of prefer my athro snakes to be minimalistic on actual physical changes of the body. Giving them limbs sorta takes away the original charm of snakes. That and snakes with limbs looks really weird.

Until I started coming across images of Kaa on DA, I never even knew the character existed. His cousin, Sir Hiss from Robin Hood, and Klang from an episode of Tailspin weren't that memorable either, and the last was pretty much the closest Disney has come to making an anthro snake (given that Klang was a villain with robotic parts under a cloak and wide-brimmed hat however, he was one of the better villains of Tailspin by a long shot). Thankfully, I have better memories of Aladdin with Jafar in his snake form, but that's not saying much.

Anyways, nice to see someone doing their research. Amazing how a little bit can make the difference between a typical cartoon character and a character that is realistically plausible.

PharaohQueen In reply to ChapterAquila92 [2011-04-19 21:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, I forgot about Hiss. Jafar was awesome. There's a terrifying and excellent snake form. All fangs and hood and death.

Too bad it only lasted for a few minutes on-screen before he wished to be "the most powerful genie in the world" though. For the record, he would have done quite well had he controlled his god complex a little better.

And surely that is the great lesson that all Disney movies teach us: Be a better villain than this.
