NOTE: I'm not trying to push any sexual identity agenda or statement with these, so for those calling this tutorial "cis-sexist", keep in mind that tutorials such as these are much easier and simpler to explain this way to an art-education audience.
I got so many inquiries about a male tutorial, so thanks to everyone for their patience. As with my female tutorial, I don't intend to offend anyone with these, so please don't get offended for some reason. These are very generalized body types, so there are a million types in between these.
I may do up some more intensive anatomical tutorials based on my schooling and others' methods.
As before, there are many illustrators out there that know much more than I do, so I highly suggest studying their work and methodology:
Frank Frazetta
Tanino Liberatore
Steve Huston
Michael Hampton
Moebius
John Buscema
Burne Hogarth
Andrew Loomis
Milo Manara
Paolo Serpieri
Phil Hale
Nishimura Kinu
Jeffrey Catherine Jones
Barry Windsor-Smith
Bernie Wrightson
Bengus

People are upset by their biological bodies? they need to grow up especially if they are pursuing art, anywho. I really like this tutorial and I think it is so awesome how you had so many different body types and some I haven't seen in tutorials, anyway. love it.

I agree. There's a big difference between being concerned for someone's health(especially if they're morbidly obese or horribly emaciated) and merely imposing your personal taste on others(which too many people do).
Thanks a bunch! Glad I could help!

Thanks! I was having a hard time finding anatomy for an overweight, or otherwise not muscular/idealized, man. This helps a lot.

Ah, I never noticed the difference between steroidVSnatural muscles before except for the fat ratio! I never noticed the texture was different too! Thanks!

It's a very general observation for sure, so I'd look up more specific info if you want to be very accurate.

Another good way to spot some differences, is look at modern body builders, then look at bodybuilders from Arnold's time and back. You'll notice that certain muscles in steroid users are over grown and out of proportion, like the thigh's and traps. Also, the distended belly/abs.

Haha, thanks!
Don't consider this a definitive tutorial, most of the illustrators mentioned in the description are much more qualified than I am, so go check out their work and learn from them as well!

Curious about the muscle section. Trying to understand the difference. I'm not sure which body type is for natural and which depicts steriods. Maybe the height difference is throwing me?

Phobos-Romulus In reply to DragonPud [2015-04-08 03:04:45 +0000 UTC]
I probably should've made it more noticeable for sure, but the one on the right is the less natural one. The height is definitely enforcing the illusion, but just from what I've noticed, and I'm no expert on muscle building, more natural bodybuilding has a more evident layer of fat to it. Naturally built muscles tend to look just a tad softer.

Damn, that's what I've been looking for! Nice to see some diversity. Had kinda problems with diversity, for (Unfortunatley) many see the typical extremly-buff male as standard in artworks. And really, I don't want to see another barbarian that looks like He-man .

Lol at the guy wanting you to erase the penises...that actually made me laugh, but also pained me a little.

I've been through that too (and I've noticed ref. sheets often done of characters that have to be made available in both censored and uncensored editions simply because people can't accept seeing non-sexualized male or female parts in their drawings).

Phobos-Romulus In reply to studio-toledo [2015-02-19 02:44:46 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I've done enough behind over backwards to accommodate people regarding these tutorials, so I don't find it necessary at all to do a censored version.
I mean, just look at Michelangelo's David. No one has ever cried for censoring of that, and it never needs to be, because as you said, the genitalia is non sexualized.

Now you see why art mattered back then when we weren't putting in terrible ideals into these guys.

Could you not add the penises next time, I saved this to my phone and my parents questioned my sexuality, I mean, we know they are males, so the penises aren't really needed next time.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to PallygyrlDashie [2015-04-01 02:25:40 +0000 UTC]
Again, what's the big deal? Everyone one the planet has genitalia of some kind.
If you're going to get into art, you're going to have to get used to seeing them, so grow up.

Are you kidding me?! What are you, 12?
They're only barely indicated, and if you or your parents are oversensitive to that, that's not my problem.

studio-toledo In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2015-02-19 01:10:50 +0000 UTC]
I would say these are the mostly honestly-drawn male bodies I've ever seen. I can tolerate seeing this any day over what often gets drawn elsewhere.
"They're only barely indicated"
That's the only way to really do it. You need to make it seem as unnoticeable as possible while hinting there is actually something there anyway, but not in the way your eyes keep going down there all the time. That is a challenge for any artist wanting to draw nude models without being too graphic in the details. It's easy to think of the genial region as simply a "C" turned on it's side with a "U" in the middle. One you can get past that, you can tackle anything.

Thanks very much! My tutorial is built on very general advice, and I don't want to be considered an expert on anything, but I appreciate the compliments.
Yeah, to me, the groin area would come straight to your attention f it didn't have any genitalia indicated. Featureless crotch areas always call more attention to themselves.

studio-toledo In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2015-02-19 03:06:38 +0000 UTC]
It's like being in a grade school science class and noticing that's how they show a nude body in a book. It's not until you're in college when they break that out.
I always think of the Oscar-nominated short from a few years back, "Adam & Dog" as a good example of depicting a crotch in the simplest way possible, yet there are those that cry foul at not seeing public hair there or anything else (one even wondered why the dog didn't have any either, it's called thinking too hard as I put it).
