Description
A tutorial I whipped up centering around my 3 recently submitted portraits. I've always liked drawing portraits, so I thought I'd make a tutorial to help others out with the activity.Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Please excuse any typos. I'm usually good about this sort of thing, but when there's a lot of text, it sometimes slips under my radar.

Hello! Thanks for creating such a good tutorial! I am an aspiring artist and YouTuber and your tutorial was featured in one of my videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X6Jcqβ¦
If you like it and are a pay-it-forward type of person, I would appreciate a little help getting the word about my channel out. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Thanks very much! I'm thinking of starting some kind of patreon devoted to helping people learn how to draw, as I learn how to draw better along the way!

Ha, I really should edit that part out, noses that come to a point are definitely fine to draw, its just important that you don't push it too far.Β

Noses can and should be pointier for variety, I realize that now, but separating it into different planes still applies.

That nose part of this tutorial was extremely helpful. It has cured me of my inability to draw noses. The way you explained really helped me understand it's shape as a 3d object and has given the noses in my art a more cohesive look.
Thank you sir.

Thanks for the Andrew loomis tip, there is really some great material, and a nice tutorial, hard to find good face tutorials that don't drift into an anime-like style.

Yeah, anime has its merits, but I'd rather learn from more classical sources first. Those that are heavily into the anime style should create a strong base skillset based on knowledge of classic practices and let that knowledge enhance their anime drawing.Β
When you start the other way around, you don't have a strong foundation, which is why so many anime artists lack structure.

ArchonW In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-12-19 19:05:23 +0000 UTC]
Well, in my case, it was more that I like the classical or more realistic style a lot, but it has gotten less common, or at least that's what it sometimes seems to me.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to ArchonW [2014-12-20 06:03:42 +0000 UTC]
I was just pointing that to anime styled artists in general.
Yeah, I've almost always been inclined toward the classical realistic style. There's lots of awesome styles to be found in European comics as well.

I'd always would recommend the older "Heavy Metal Magazin" issues for that. It's a good mixture of some of the best styles I've ever seen.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to ArchonW [2014-12-20 15:57:08 +0000 UTC]
Definitely the older issues.Β
There's lots of great dutch comic artists that were never featured in Heavy Metal that are spectacular draftsmen.Β

Yeah, even if they're not similar to your own style, its always great to branch out and discover new styles.

Just gonna point out that you're wrong about lips. The upper lip can be thicker and larger than the lower one.

More often than not, they tend to be thinner. This is, like my other tutorials, more based on averages and classic artistic aesthetics.Β
But yeah, I have noticed that, thanks for the suggestion!

No doubt about that, look at old tv cartoons like He-Man and She-Ra, which looked like it took months to draw. Cartoons now-a-days such as Adventure Time (though I do like the show a bit) are poorly drawn, and it doesn't look like it takes very long to draw them.... I don't understand why that's happening....
π: 0 β©: 1
Phobos-Romulus In reply to ArtemisDaGreat [2014-07-16 00:52:51 +0000 UTC]
I think production values are better now, but things were drawn much better back then. Adventure Time's animation is much nicer than He-Man, but the style, while effective, is a bit too simple for my liking.
If you wanna see something extremely impressive, look at the workprint version of Richard Williams' Thief and the Cobbler.

ArtemisDaGreat In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-16 02:07:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, aren't most older shows like that; look at Looney Tunes for example (the cartoons, not the show)...
I actually saw that, though it kind of had a boring plot line so I blocked it out. I did see the a good 50% of it though... I absolutely adored the artwork. It's obvious that a lot of work was put into it...

Phobos-Romulus In reply to ArtemisDaGreat [2014-07-16 02:11:30 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, end even disney, once upon a time.Β
The workprint version or the recobbled cut? There was a version done in the 90's that cut a lot of stuff out, a total bastardization of the work. But I do think it could use some better sound design to liven it up a bit, but just the perspective skills in that film were incredible.

ArtemisDaGreat In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-16 02:36:50 +0000 UTC]
Indeed.
I think it was the 90's version, but it still had some great artwork that was quite breathtaking.
