Haven't heard that comparison yet, but it rings true. Maybe if it had a more blue and white gradient it would fit that analogy perfectly.

Personal preference, I assume. There are a couple fractals out there that are completely linear, but most of the variations that people use with this program create some curves. In this one, it was the combination of spherical and sinusuidal variations that led to the appearance. It's basically all in the math and for most Apophysis users, if it looks good, then render it.
