I know, they're just so itty bitty! Haha I love baby hognose snakes, too. I think they look like the chubby cousin to the corn

AWW!!! Haha reminds me of my 3rd baby corn when she was still teeny tiny! She crawled up inside of a little model motorcycle and decided to nap while I spent 30 minutes trying to take it apart. Curious little things, aren't they?

SERIOUSLY!? Wow! Its is poisonous??? I wouldn't think so but still....is it??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phoenix-Cry In reply to AuroraZero [2012-05-15 01:04:21 +0000 UTC]

They are *mildly* venomous. Their toxin is so weak that humans do not have a reaction to it (not even a rash), unless you happen to be allergic (but the same thing can be said about a peanut). They are rear fanged so they kinda have to chew on their prey. It is mostly to just help paralyze toads which are very sensitive to such things.

So adorable! I wish they were not local animals; local means you can't own them or else your counted as a poacher =/ I want one so bad! It's so tiny! Your'e very lucky.

Phoenix-Cry In reply to ObsidianSeaHorse [2012-05-14 17:00:14 +0000 UTC]

There are different laws for these guys in diffrent states. At the moment the only two states you can't have them in are...thinking...CO and IL I believe. And in those states you can get permits for them.

They are great little snakes!

ObsidianSeaHorse In reply to Phoenix-Cry [2012-05-14 22:27:35 +0000 UTC]

I was told by a fish and game rep that they would hunt me down if they found out I had one. Basically anything local =/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phoenix-Cry In reply to ObsidianSeaHorse [2012-05-14 23:18:11 +0000 UTC]

Fish and game rep is only half right. You're not supposed to keep wild caught ones in certain states. But in all states other than Colorado and Iowa it is fully legal to own a captive bred hognose. In CO and IA you need a permit to own a captive bred one and you need proof that you got it from a breeder. In most states it is also legal to own a wild caught one. You'll also find Garder snakes and Rough Green snakes in many of your local pet shops and those are local to just about every part of the US, but they are also 100% legal to keep as pets. So are Rattlesnakes and that's not only a local but a venomous! Some states (California) you need a permit to own a venomous snake, most you do not. You can buy a King Cobra online for about 200$ and ship it with Delta 100% legal.

What state do you live in? I can tell you the law for that state if you are interested in owning a legal hognose.

ObsidianSeaHorse In reply to Phoenix-Cry [2012-05-14 23:23:43 +0000 UTC]

Washington, dude I have been told by most pet stores that these animals are not legal for selling ether. I wonder if you have to do it with private under the table sales then to buy them or something. I don't know anymore man! You seem to know your shit but pet stores wont even carry them here under possible fines for owning and selling local wild animals, poaching and all that jizz. If I can own a hog nose or like a gopher snake, guess whose going on a pet buying spree. THIS GIRL!

Phoenix-Cry In reply to ObsidianSeaHorse [2012-05-15 00:09:09 +0000 UTC]

Okay here is the scoop. In 2007 washington passed a dangerous animal law which makes Hognose a grey area snake in your state since they are technically venemous. I will contact one of my larger breeder friends and see if he ships to Washington

ObsidianSeaHorse In reply to Phoenix-Cry [2012-05-15 00:12:52 +0000 UTC]

Mkay. I have seen them on the market here but they are mostly under the table dealings and stuff, never mainstr-hay what? their poisonous?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phoenix-Cry In reply to ObsidianSeaHorse [2012-05-15 01:03:45 +0000 UTC]

So far all the snake breeders I've talked to say they are legal.

They are *mildly* venomous. Their toxin is so weak that humans do not have a reaction to it (not even a rash), unless you happen to be allergic (but the same thing can be said about a peanut). They are rear fanged so they kinda have to chew on their pray.

ObsidianSeaHorse In reply to Phoenix-Cry [2012-05-15 01:06:42 +0000 UTC]

Poor, sad little useless teeth, they must feel so inferior to other snakes. And awesome, I am so glad they are legal here! Now I just wish I had kept that redish baby I relocated from a garden last year =/

Phoenix-Cry In reply to ObsidianSeaHorse [2012-05-15 03:11:33 +0000 UTC]

Yup! Any breeder on Kingsnake Classifieds will ship to you!

At least they have venom, all Garder snakes can do is 'musk'.

Very true, although they are stinky, to any one who has handled them a few times, it does no good at all, poor dears.

I moved a teeny tiny garder off the bike path to keep him from being smooshed and the little bugger bit me. It couldn't have been more than five inches long and as big around as a straw.

Their so cute when their that small! All eyes, to bad they have such a temper hehe. If only they had the bite to go with that bark, almost no teeth at that age.
