Matthew just chuckled at the little conversation, a grin on his face. This sure beat them panicking whenever he moved. His eyes turned back to the man in charge. "When are we going? You have everything, right? I don't know about you, but I could use a change of scenery. And maybe a snack, ugh... You wouldn't have any food, would you...?" he asked with a sheepish expression and a hand over his middle. "I'm a growing kid, after all. And I haven't eaten since yesterday."

"Well, stop growing," Lieutenant Johnson said firmly. "You're already big enough as it is." He sighed. "Feeding you is not going to be easy... you had better make this worth it," he said, pointing up at Matthew firmly.

The lieutenant turned to his men. "All right, let's bring him back to camp," he ordered. "Matthew, you can get up again, but slowly, and don't you dare try anything." His eyes flickered to the five men who still had their bows slung across their backs, and they nodded. "Otherwise you'll end up looking like an oversized pincushion. I can assure you, they're good enough shots to bring you down with a few arrows, giant or no."

The teen snorted at the order against his person. "Not like I can really stop it, you know. It doesn't have an off switch." he joked. "Hey, if you're willing to feed me, then yeah, I'll make it worth your time." Following the second order, Matthew slowly got to his feet again, shrugging at the men nonchalantly. "I'll be good. I really don't intend to have anymore arrows in me, today." he said, but still eyed each of the archers cautiously. That one Cedric had got him in the arm with earlier had hurt, and it still did a little bit. He rubbed the punctured area absently, swiping a bit of blood off it.

"Just lead the way, Lieutenant! I'll be right behind you! Er, maybe a few steps behind, actually." he laughed.

"Be sure you keep a few paces back," the lieutenant said with a frown, starting to lead him back towards camp. Every so often, he glanced over his shoulder to check up on the giant following him, and all of the other men formed a crescent behind him, hands on their weapons and prepared to strike at any moment if they had to.

Matthew did as he was told, waiting a few minutes before following and then making sure to walk slow so he didn't step too far ahead of his carefully measured distance. Whenever the man would glance back at him he'd raise his eyebrows questioningly with a small smile, then would glace to the other men when he looked away again. There wasn't really a reason for it, he was just curious how long they would stand being stared at by the seemingly over-relaxed giant teen. He mentally kept tabs on Cedric--also for no particular reason. Matthew had grown interested in the ginger, and he sort of always wanted to know where he was and that he wasn't lagging behind or getting underfoot.

His mind went back to when he'd had the little archer in his hand--his whole waist, in his hand. He flexed it absently, curious about feeling it again... It was empowering. And it was also just plain weird. If he got home, he'd never get to feel it again.

Each time, the men all stared back at him with varied expressions. Some of them looked a little annoyed, some looked cautious, and some looked downright frightened. Cedric, however, had a thoughtful expression, oddly enough, and he kept putting his hand to where Matthew's had wrapped around him, sometimes with a slight wince, but mostly just looking thoughtful.

They reached a camp before too long, and many more men started to come out of the tents. Some were in full uniform, but most were only in uniform from the waist down and were either wearing a tank top or shirtless.

When they came closer to the camp, Matthew's eyes widened at the sight of all the tents, all smaller than any he'd ever seen. The giant muttered a small "wow..." as more men came out, his eyes scanning each of them for weapons and just overall reaction. He almost stopped walking when he was only at the entrance.

The men stared up at him, astonished. Some ducked back into their tents for their weapons. Lieutenant Johnson called, "It's all right! He's with us!" To Matthew, he said, "You'd better sit or something. Makes you a lot less intimidating. Plus, if they see that you're cooperating, they'll be less likely to try an' kill you at some point."

Matthew didn't register the order at first, but after a second he did and slowly knelt. "Good to know..." Green eyes found Cedric again to keep him from zoning out a second time. He gave him a small sideways smile, tilting his head in the opposite direction subtly in an effort to get him to come closer. Maybe if they saw Cedric with him and not as nervous, it would help? Was worth a try.

Cedric looked up at him for a moment before nodding and slowly coming over next to him. "You'd better not grab me again," he said in an undertone. But despite that, he stood close enough to Matthew that either one of them could reach out and touch the other easily.

When Cedric edged closer, Matthew relaxed a bit, chuckling slightly at what he said. Though he didn't move much, he just lightly shifted his arm to ruffle to the ginger's hair carefully, a smile on his face. He still felt like the experience was surreal... He leaned down to whisper to Cedric.

"What if I just picked you up? Not now, but later? I wouldn't grab you, but... Would you let me? I'd be way more careful than before, promise."

(Don't forget about the other men in the camp! I want to know how they reacted to the little display!)

"I really am sorry about that, Cedric, I was in a tight spot and I just kind of freaked. I didn't mean to hurt you..." Matthew muttered, his smile fading. "Think I could make it up to you..?"

((Sorry! I'm not used to playing a bunch of people at once... you want to take some of them?))

"Maybe," Cedric muttered, still scowling a bit. "I can't think of how right now, though."

The others in the camp had seemed a bit tense when Matthew had roughed Cedric's hair up, but when the archer stayed close nonetheless, seeming to be not very afraid of the giant, they relaxed a bit. Some went back into their tents or back to what they had been doing before, but most remained outside looking up at the giant.

((SO SORRY ABOUT THE WAIT, I'M A TERRIBLE PERSON, MY BAD.))
(Just lump some in a group or pick out two or three to use as metaphorical representatives. You don't have to mention many.)

"Oh, uh... Right. Okay. You just let me know when you think of something, then..." the teen muttered back, eyes wandering out over the remaining men that continued to stare at him. He wasn't used to this much attention, and especially not in a situation like this one. He shifted ever so slightly before making himself look a little more confident, green eyes turning to theΒ Lieutenant.

"So, uh,Β Lieutenant Johnson..." he started, then spoke a bit quieter, still feeling the weight of eyes on his. "You said you had food...?"

((NO YOU'RE NOT, BE QUIET.))
(Okay, I'll do that, then. Or I'll try, at least.)

Cedric nodded. "I'll do that," he assured Matthew, looking up at him with a faint frown still.

Lieutenant Johnson nodded, ignoring the stares and glares he was now receiving from many of his men. "Private Fitch, you seem to be comfortable enough with our guest," he said. "Show him the way to the mess hall."

Cedric, not allowing any emotion show on his face, nodded. "Yes sir!" he said with a salute. Turning to Matthew, he said, "Follow me," and began to walk off, skirting around the camp.

Matthew furrowed his brows at the words 'guest' and 'mess hall', surprised by both but more so by the latter. "When Cedric then turned away and started walking, he looked between him and the lieutenant for a moment, slightly confused. "Wai--wha--mess hall???" He looked back to Cedric to see he'd already gotten a little bit ahead, then started to quickly stand to follow before reminding himself to be slower around the soldiers. Nothing so far was worth the experience of getting another arrow in him.

"Uh, right..." The large teen eased himself up to full height and took a quick glance at the people around him, making note of how much walking space he had or where he would best have a chance to... do whatever, should the need arise. He took a step after Cedric, already cutting most of the distance as he moved to follow. "So, uh... The 'mess hall' isn't in a tent, right...? 'Cause I didn't see any tents big enough for me to walk into..."

Phoenix-FireMage In reply to Amenarae [2014-02-23 01:29:50 +0000 UTC]

"Well, it is," Cedric admitted, walking quickly around camp, though his pace was closer to that of a man hustling to get somewhere quickly than that of a man running away from something, and he only glanced back at Matthew once. "We can bring it out to you easily enough, though. You may have to wait a little while for Cook to make enough food for you, however."

Amenarae In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-02-23 01:46:21 +0000 UTC]

"Oh, yeah, okay. I can wait." Matthew said in reply to a question he knew wasn't asked, watching his steps for anything lying around or just to avoid kicking someone. Again, he didn't intend to be target practice for these men. "So, uh, Cedric... How old are you? You know, just asking and whatnot..."

Cedric gave him an odd look, but he replied, "Twenty. You?"

When they arrived at the long tent of the mess hall, Cedric said, "Sit down and make yourself comfortable, but don't touch anything." Without waiting for a response, the redhead ducked into a nearby wooden building, which was the kitchen. A little bit later, the chef, who looked to be about the toughest man Matthew had yet met here, came out to look up at the giant visitor.

"Well, if you expect me to feed you," he said at last, "then you'd better make yourself useful and help prepare the meal."

"Nineteen. Heh. We're only a year apart." he replied, a slight smirk slipping back onto his face. When the archer ducked into a building after briefly 'ordering' him to sit, Matthew gave the area around him a long glance and found himself a space to sit cross-legged until another man came out. Green eyes studied him for a moment before registering what was said to him.

"Wha--? Oh! Right! Uh--? What do I... do?"

"Well, I can't put you to work peeling potatoes," the cook said, seeming to be thinking out loud. His steely gaze remained locked on Matthew's face the entire time he was talking. "You'd peel off thicker skins than anyone else... Do you know how to make bread dough?"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amenarae In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-02-23 04:18:10 +0000 UTC]

"Bread... dough?" he repeated with copious amounts of confusion, and possibly a little appalled. "You want me to make bread dough? Are you serious? I've never... When I offered to help in exchange for something to eat, I meant realΒ work, not cooking." Matthew spat in disgust. What did this man think he was? A busboy? Matthew was more than twice his size, could do manual labor with far more efficiency, and he wanted him to makeΒ bread dough? The teen moved to stand, more than just a little peeved at the man. "Why don't you let me know if you have something more worth my time."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Phoenix-FireMage In reply to Amenarae [2014-02-23 04:25:29 +0000 UTC]

"What, and you think cooking isn't important?" the cook demanded, putting his hands on his hips and glaring up at Matthew. "Now see here. If you're not willing to help make the meal, then how do you expect me to be able to make enough for everyone on such short notice? If that's your attitude, then you're just going to have to go hungry until it changes!" Muttering about how he had enough trouble without having to feed unhelpful giants and the ingratitude of some people, he turned on his heel, going back inside the kitchen.

"What?! Why you--!" Matthew stomped in front of the little tent after the chef had gone back inside, mildly on the verge of seething. "Give me hard labor or something else to do! But I ain't making no friggin' bread!" he barked loudly after the man and most probably drawing attention to himself, hands gripped tightly into fists with well-worn knuckles. His arms shook with tense restraint for a moment before he stepped back from the tent, reminding himself where he was and the impending threat of an entire camp of foot-tall soldiers ready to take a chunk out of him. The teen grit his teeth and glared somewhere in the distance to cool off enough to level his head. His eyes looked for the nearest soldier.

"Can you take you back to Lieutenant Johnson?" he snapped, though making an effort to bite back his anger. He had a feeling that the men wouldn't take so well him just wandering around by himself, especially with his temper still present.

(Don't forget to add in a reaction of the soldiers in earshot of him when he spills his little outburst at the chef. I doubt they're going to just let that slide, considering he's a potential hostile even without his now-present temper.)

Phoenix-FireMage In reply to Amenarae [2014-02-23 20:29:45 +0000 UTC]

The soldier shook his head and hurried off to tell the lieutenant that Matthew was making trouble. Several other soldiers, who had been within earshot, started to make their way towards the mess hall area, drawing their swords cautiously, ready to defend their cook if they had to.

The cook himself stepped out of the building again, seething right back at Matthew. "So you think making bread is too easy for you?" he snapped. "You want something harder? Fine then! Why don't you just go cross the eastern desert, and fetch the Golden River for us? Or is that beneath you as well?"

Cedric peeked out of the building with a partly peeled potato in one hand and a paring knife in the other, looking between the two of them with a frown and a slightly intimidated look on his face.

The nineteen-year-old blonde eyed every approaching soldier in turn, part of him already preparing for a fight if he had to while another part was telling him to calm down. But he didn't want to calm down, not with weapons drawn around him and the chef returning to finish his insults. He began to raise his fists as though ready for a boxing match, jutting out his lower jaw and eyes practically burning with welling rage.

Then he stopped. Matthew slowly and hesitantly lowered his fists again, shutting his eyes for a moment to take in a deep breath. His shoulders relaxed and he turned to face the chef again, lowering himself to kneel.

"I apologize, sir." he said in a far calmer voice than expected from a hot-tempered young man like himself. The acid was well hidden and slowly dissipating. "I meant that I have never worked with food, before and I wasn't sure how to respond. I am used to physical labor, things like building or hauling, but never cooking. My... temper was inexcusable and unwarranted. I haven't eaten for a few days, just wandering in a land I do not know. My first meeting with any people here did not have a good start, either. I suppose my nerves are just still on edge trying to take it all in... If you would tell me how... I would like to try making that bread dough..."

While sincere enough about most of what he was saying, Matthew was struggling to swallow back the bile from apologizing to the man for something he didn't really feel so apologetic about. But he was convincing, and he knew it would be important to be careful lest he wanted to bleed... Regardless of size, he was far outnumbered and without weapon. He wasn't stupid enough to think his chances were perfect in this situation, so for now he needed to lie low...

"That's better," the cook said with a slight smile. Turning to the still approaching soldiers, he rolled his eyes and told them to go away. There were a few protests, but they obeyed, leaving just the three of them. "You will have to do some hauling, actually..." the cook said thoughtfully, returning his attention to Matthew. "Cedric can show you where the spring and mill are. There are some barrels around there somewhere. Fill half of them with flour, and the other half with water. Then report back here. I'll find you a bowl big enough." Without turning to face the red-haired soldier, Cook barked, "Fitch, stop staring like an idiot and show him where everything is!"

Cedric ducked inside the building again to get rid of his knife and potato, approaching Matthew. "Okay... let's go, then..."

At the sight of the chef's immediate look of having won, Matthew grit his teeth again, biting back the urge to make a move towards him. That would only undo his efforts. But at the sight of Cedric again he felt bad, seeing the expression on his face. Had he just lost whatever trust he had in the teen...? The blonde nodded when he approached, slowly getting up again and following after the red-head. Guilt strangely welled in his chest.

"Cedric, uh..." he started, then bit his lip. What was he even supposed to say? After a moment he settled for mumbling a small "sorry..." and saying nothing more.

Cedric looked up at him, confused. "What have you done now?" he asked as Cook reentered the building. The next moment, an angry yell bellowed out, and Cedric flinched, quickening his pace. Glancing up at Matthew again, he seemed to deliberate for a moment, and then nodded. "Remember your request from earlier? I think... I think I changed my mind. It'll make it quicker to... get there, at least." He didn't say that it would also make it quicker to get away from the cook, who was now mad at him, but the unsaid statement was clear under his words.

(I JUST SNORTED SO LOUD I ACTUALLY PAUSED TO LOOK AROUND MY ROOM AS IF I WOULD'VE BEEN HEARD BY SOMEONE. CEDRIC, OMG, YOU'RE ADORABLE.)

The shout from the chef behind them almost had Matthew turning around to look, but then he caught sight of Cedric going faster and a sly grin momentarily slipped onto his face. "My request?" the teen echoed, confused until Cedric mentioned 'getting there quicker'. The grin returned full force; Cedric was agreeing to let him pick him up again! The teen was practically giddy! "Just point me in the right direction!" he said with an overly present smile in his tone, dipping forward to suddenly snatch the archer's uniform and hoist him into the air. Matthew wrapped his hand around the red-head's middle and held him closer to his own, picking up speed to a quickened walking pace--none of the soldiers could ever hope to catch up with him like his. Long, calloused fingers gripped Cedric carefully but firmly, jittery at being able to experience the weirdness of holding a person so easily; and it was so painfully obvious that Matthew wanted to just stop and study the feeling, but he kept on walking anyway.

((OH WOW! I DID NOT EXPECT THAT RESPONSE!))

Cedric let out a startled yelp as he was lifted up. Squirming a little, he complained, "We have got to give you some lessons on how to pick a person up! If you do that again, I'm never coming within twenty feet of you without a direct order from a superior again!" Still, even with the scowl on his face, Cedric pointed over to a somewhat distant building. "That's the mill. Take the long way around the camp to it rather than cutting through the middle, though."

"Sorry, sorry!" Matthew laughed, sounding completely not-sorry about it. "Why the long way? Don't want me going through camp and scaring people?" he asked with a chuckle, the excitement still evident in his voice as he did as told. If Cedric would only look up he'd see the broad smile on Matthew's face. "So Cedric, what can you tell me about these giants the Lieutenant was talking about earlier?"

Cedric sighed. "Something like that," he said, wiggling just a bit to get into a more comfortable position. "Plus, I don't know how good you are at watching your step yet." Glancing up at Matthew, he said in an annoyed tone, "You are enjoying this far too much." Nevertheless, the small soldier complied with Matthew's request, drumming his fingers on the larger one encircling him absently while he spoke. "Well, they live way off to the southish of here," Cedric started, "past the Goblin Mountains. They're about your size, from what I've heard, though not all of the stories agree that they're as... human appearing. They're not very friendly, either, even with their own kind."

Amenarae In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-02-23 22:45:02 +0000 UTC]

"I won't deny that." Matthew retorted to the comment of his good mood towards getting to hold Cedric again. And he really wouldn't deny it. But he wasn't about to tell him why he liked it so much. "You've got goblins here, too? I'm starting to feel like I'm stuck in some fantasy story. But anyway, those giants don't sound like my kind. I am definitely human."

The blonde was fighting the urge to catch Cedric's hand to make him stop tapping his fingers, the feeling giving him weird chills from having those tiny hands on his own finger. It was still too surreal. "Hey how come you warmed up to me faster, by the way? Just curious. Because everyone else in your squad didn't seem quite so comfortable with me. Am I really that scary?"

Cedric tipped his head back to look up at Matthew again, a confused look on his face. "You don't have goblins where you're from?" he asked, his hand stilling and merely resting on the giant's finger now. "Lucky... those little buggers are not good to encounter. Yet another reason we don't go over to giant territory often..."

Shrugging, Cedric replied, "I dunno... I just... did. And yes, you are. You're about forty feet tall, and to be perfectly honest, you act like you're trying to frighten us on purpose."

So goblins were smaller than them? He stored that info for later thought when Cedric answered his question. "Well, yeah, I guess being so much bigger would have a lot to do with it." he chuckled. Then the smile faded a bit. "Sorry... I think it's just a subconscious thing anymore, a habit from having grown up in the places I did. You see, I often had a lot of guys trying to pick fights with me, so I learned to make myself seem more intimidating without having to try. I don't get bothered as much anymore since then... Mostly it's not intentional." Matthew didn't bother filtering out the 'mostly', feeling he should at least be honest about it. He did kind of like being able to make them nervous without trying... So he partially admitted to it.

"ButΒ you'reΒ not that scared of me, right, Cedric? After all, you didn't say no when I asked you to come over before."

"Oh. That makes sense, then," Cedric said with a nod. "If you stay around us, though, you may have to work on being unimposing instead in order to make sure you don't get killed by someone who believes you to be a threat," he advised, "which I'm fairly certain you wouldn't want." Starting to drum his fingers on Matthew's forefinger again, the archer admitted, "Well... you're still very intimidating... but... I think I'm starting to get used to being around you."

Again with the drumming of the tiny fingers. Once Cedric had said his piece, Matthew shifted his top finger and caught the archer's hand between the two, holding it captive there to keep him from drumming them again. "Good to know. At least someone doesn't hate me in that camp." He apparently didn't seem to think the action needed explanation. Or apology.

After another minute Matthew walked up to the mill, but he showed no indication of setting Cedric down. Instead, he walked around behind it and leaned on the structure, looking down at the red-head curiously with smirk and gripping the back of his uniform to turn him around.

"Ah... Matthew, we're supposed to be getting flour, remember?" Cedric asked, trying to pull his uniform out of the giant's fingers. "Not... whatever it is you're doing. We're here; you can put me down now."

"Yeah, I know, but... I'm finally getting a good look at you." came his excuse, lifting him just a little higher. While he held him up with one hand, Matthew tugged different parts of the archer's uniform curiously with his other hand, though he was more interested in the red-head himself. "Dude, it's so weird to think you're only a year only than me...!" the teen grinned with a chuckle. He lightly pinched one of Cedric's arms before letting it go again. "How can we both be human when we're not even on the same scale? It's crazy, man! How tall are you again?"

"I'm 5'8," Cedric replied, scowling at him. "Look, I can understand your being interested and amazed, and I'm sure I would be too, but would you quit manhandling me? I'm not some moving doll, you know! And I don't like this."

"Even if I were on scale with you, I'd still be taller!" the teen laughed, continuing to mess with the archer. Cedric's complaints almost didn't get a response, but he figured he should stop annoying while the soldier still semi-liked him. "Right, right, okay." he finally conceded, lowering him to the ground with a big amused smile. Maybe he could eventually get someone else from the squad to let him pick them up. He pushed off the building and took to looking for the barrels.

"So how many did he say he wanted again? I know he said half and half, but how many barrels? gauging by your size and the assumption the barrels are normal-to-you-sized barrels... I could probably carry around twenty or more. Just in my arms."

Cedric entered the mill, starting to drag out bags of flour. "Without breaking them?" he asked without pausing to wait for an answer, figuring that he'd be able to hear Matthew from inside just as well as outside. "And I guess we can just get as many as we can find..."

The teen snorted at the question. "Of course without breaking them. Unless you've got some ridiculously flimsy barrels. Though I doubt we'll need ten of each. Maybe five?" Seeing all the work Cedric was doing to haul out the bags, Matthew crouched on all fours to look into the little building with an arched brow. "Want some help or something? Wouldn't want to wear you out..."

Cedric paused, looking back and forth between the door and Matthew's hand. "Sure," he said at last, going back inside. "You probably won't be able to see what you're doing, though, so I'll direct you. And thanks."

"No problem." Sticking his hand through the doorway, Matthew felt along in the direction he'd seen Cedric standing, snickering as he felt along the floor after him and tried to touch him. Eventually he justΒ set his hand down on the floor in wait for directions, still snickering and grinning to himself. "Where am I going, Cedric?"

Cedric carefully avoided the searching hand with a slight smile, going to where the bags were stacked and starting to pull one down. "Just slide your hand in a bit further for now," he called.

(Lols~ Playing around~ That was cute~! >u<)

Matthew complied, shifting himself to lie down and then reaching in even more. He turned his hand palm-up as though waiting for something to be placed in it. "You know, my arm still hurts where you shot me." he informed him offhandedly. "Just how tightly strung do your keep your bow?"

"Fairly tight," Cedric replied, heaving the large sack into Matthew's palm, shaking his head when he saw how tiny it looked now. As he pulled down another, he added, "It's a hundred pound bow, too, so it packs a good kick."
