Pardon the sarcasm. It's an allegory. Polar bears need floating ice to hunt. If the floating ice is too thin to support them (hence the title), they swim great distances back to shore, and starve.

Animals come and go, the earth delivers animals up and then they eventually are swallowed back up into the earth again. We too will all go one day.
