Hey, thats a great tutorial for people wanting to add borders but who don't know how to. And you beat me to it! I was about to make a border tutorial (only for photoshop though). Well done on this one.
I do have one little suggestion. You left out the "Relative" option in the tutorial. I don't know if you did that to make it eaiser for people (although it actually makes it harder if you leave that set out).
WHen you're adding the border in Photoshop you can just click on Relative and type in the number (for example, click 'relative' and type 100 in both boxes to get a 50px border all around). That a lot easier than having to do the math and saves time too!
Perhaps you could add that in. It would be an even more helpful tutorial that way!

YAY! Thank you for doing this. It was a lot clearer than what was outlined in a book on Photoshop. I'm saving this one to print out and look at later.

Well the method explained in this tutorial can very easily be extended to do what you are doing, it's just a matter of choosing your style next.
Cheers.

Will be very useful to those who dont use Photoshop and to the people who don't know the different techniqiues to add a border. I use the first manner, except I choose the "relative" checkbox and just type how many pixels I want for the border, rather than doing the math in my head

I use the same methods [in Photoshop]. It's the fastest I know.
Very true with the border colour as well!

Mhhhhh.... I've looked at there is no "Edit -> Borders" in my Photoshop 7 and my Photoshop CS... Are you sure it's not in another place or spelled differently ?

I've a french version of PHOTOSHOP CS, and this functionnality is directly in "Edition; Contour". This is this one that I use for my picture.
I'll put a print screen to see You where it is.
If I remember well there is a tut on DA about it. I'll find it if it exist.

No need for a print screen, I see what you mean now.
On the english version it's called 'Edit -> Stroke' and it's equivalent to what I show in the Blending options in method #2 but as far as I've used it, it does not make the image grow which means you have to place the border "inside" which effectively looses some of the pixels of the photo.
But maybe I'm using it wrong, I'd love to learn how you do your borders in more details.
Thanks again for the info.

HI, sorry for the delay.
I think that you don't have to loose some pxl of the photo because You have to put more pxl on your psd file.
If you photo is in 1000x2500pxls and you waunt a border at 10% of the photo, you have just to create a new psd in 1100x 2600pxls.
You don't loose anything.

this is very useful
but what about adding "accessories" to the border i mean, in addition to the canvas "frame", some pretty patterns can be added to the corners---how do those work?

photo-class In reply to magickarian [2005-01-26 06:59:25 +0000 UTC]
That would be for a different tutorial (this one is very long already) but adding things to the frame is probably not something we would like to cover (see my comments about simplicty in the tutorial ) although I'm sure it's something that you can find out if you ask the deviants that do it often
Cheers.

Oops! I should have been more clear.
This is how I do it:
Adobe Photoshop 7
Open image
Resize image
Open new image of desired proportions.
Paste old image in.
Done.
Although I like their way better, because of the handy tip on "Stroke" and adding that small border around the image. My small lines around my pictures always did look like crap... I wondered...
