Well, they probably only "know" what the mall management tells them, that in itself is kind of scary. I got approached by a large military sort one day as I was taking a photo of a spiral staircase. The camera was pointed in the direction of the dept. of defence building and he was "concerned" about it. I just said to him, "If it concerns you, I will stop?". He replied that he could not ask me to stop but that it "CONCERNED" him...
What do you say to that??? I just packed up and left, though I wanted to say: "If I lived in a rational world, no one would suspect a man and a woman with a 300mm lens on a tripod, out in the open on a sunny day, in a known tourist spot, of covert activity".

I hate veiled threats, and that sounds like a veiled threat. You should have packed your camera, and then started taking shots with your phone, and whispering up your sleeve.
