Description Early this morning, and a narrowboat arrives out of the mist to moor at the marina for a couple of days. A boat moored 'online' fires up his woodburner to ward of the early morning chill.

This was taken from my front doors.

I just logged out here and logged in the *VillageGreen-Society , and there was no option to submit as a member. There is an option to suggest a fave, but the link was down. I'll ask Adam about that. There a few things I want to quiz him about. I would have thought as a contributor you would have access to menus.

Love the mood, the mist combined with the smoke gives an etherial effect. Takes me back to my youth up the Yarra Velley, early morning, mist and wood fires to defrost by.
At least wood is a cyclic fuel, burn wood, created some CO2, need to grow more wood to the supply sufficient for the fire, trees are made from CO2 - cyclic.
Not practicle for a big city, choke the place with smoke, err, more smoke (power stations just put the pollution in another place - out of sight out of mind).

Thanks a lot for the faves and the great comment. I have to defend my woodburning, and, after much research can hold my own in most renewable energy, non global warming, particulate producing arguments. I had to do it a couple of times after I submitted this shot. Thing is, when all is said and done, at the end of the day......... It ain't half cosy on my boat right about now!

Too many people have ceased thinking completely, their opinions and knowledge are derived entirely form watching the electronic intelligence reducing device (AKA TV).
They will happily condemn you for burning wood, something that can be replaced by simply growing a few more trees, then go and put another load through the dryer, turn the electric heater/air conditioner up a little and have a 46" TV, complete with surround sound, going from dawn to midnight - all done without activating a single brain cell.
Of all the heating devices for the home the old wood heater is the best and it uses a cyclic fuel, not a linear fuel. Stick wood in heater, need more wood eventually so make sure there are adequate trees to keep up the supply - burn wood, give off CO2, growing tree sucks up the CO2, makes more wood - cyclic and not contributing to atmospheric CO2.
Electricity for all the must have electronic gimmicks and fancy gizmos (including heating) - dig up coal or oil, (making a monumental mess in the process), burn to make steam for turbines, exhaust CO2, water and a heap of toxic substances - go dig up some more - linear, non-renewable and constantly adding to atmospheric CO2 and pollution.

Not exactly rocket science, only requires about two functional brain cells to work out but seems beyond an awful lot of people.
The only problem with wood heaters and stoves is the smoke, becomes a problem in high density areas but easy enough to fix, just fit a precipitator on the chimney.
The same people who condemn you would think nothing about sitting around a campfire if they ever went camping or even just for a picnic in the country.
This global warming crap we keep hearing about is all bullshit anyway. The cause of climate change around the world is not from greenhouse gasses (been getting a lot colder since 2004 anyway, not hotter, in direct response to solar activity and energy output, not greenhouse gases) but from the massive world wide deforestation. Remove enough trees in a small area and you change the local climate (thats what created the Sahara Desert, the Middle East deserts, and turned Egypt from a high rainfall region with rain forest into a desert), do this world wide and the effects are world wide (requires a bit more thought and knowledge than the wood burning issue, but not much, maybe three brain cells).
By using a wood fire you are actually doing your bit to try and reverse the trend, you depend on wood so you will want to be sure there will always be sufficient wood - needs trees.
Looks like a great lifestyle you have, puttering up and down the old canals in your floating tent and obviously using much less electricity than those who condemn you (unless you have a bloody long power cord).

It's nice to come across someone who has formed their own opinion instead of just spouting verbatum what they have seen on TV.

The smoke I produce is the only thing I feel a little guilty about, but to keep my chimney clear, even seasoned wood has to be burned fairly briskly, so the smoke only really occurs during the first 15 minutes after lighting.

Yes, living on a boat is a fabulous lifestyle. I actually live on a marina and have an electric hook up, but I use very little power, as the very lifestyle I have chosen influences your views, and you subconsciously adopt a fairly 'gadget free' lifestyle. (This is reflected in my utility bills that are an absolute fraction of my friends and family) I cruise away from my home mooring as much as possible. There is too much beautiful countryside not to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dontheunsane In reply to photonig [2009-11-07 13:54:42 +0000 UTC]

The first step on the road to thinking is to amputate the power chord for the TV, if nothing else you will have to think of something to do with all the time that used to be wasted in front of it.

If all the old barge canals are still in existance there you could spend a lifetime puttering around the country. I know they used to be extensive and were the main means of moving goods around as barges can carry much more than carts. Who needs electronic gismos to entertain you to death when you have the canals to wander.

I used to drive all over the countryside in an old Land Rover, now most of the land I used to drive through is closed off, all "No entry without permit" and locked gates everywhere.

I haven't had a telly for a while, now. I spend most of my time writing or walking the towpaths in the area. There are hundred of miles of navigable canals throughout the country, and my plan is to go continuous cruising when I can cut down my living costs to a minimum. Many people spend their later years just travelling the beautiful countryside at 4mph, and that is my plan.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dontheunsane In reply to photonig [2009-11-07 15:51:27 +0000 UTC]

Great way to live and at 4mph you see much more than zooming past at 60mph on the motorway.
People don't seem to realise that you can actually live without most of the trappings of modern life. A fridge/freezer and computer, that's about all you really need (much easier to write something on a computer than the old typewriter).

I have done my sums, and all I need is my diesel, laptop, simple food a nice glass of something in the evening and the countryside around me. Not setting your sights too high can sometimes mean you get the best of the deal.

Dontheunsane In reply to photonig [2009-11-07 16:38:25 +0000 UTC]

Not having too many gimicks and gizmos to distract allows you to live and enjoy life more. Life in the slow lane is fuller and richer but our modern world makes living a simpler, more laid back life very difficult.

photonig In reply to Dontheunsane [2009-11-07 16:42:54 +0000 UTC]

Being a bit of an old hippy, I always had the urge to drop out. By living on a boat I have managed to take a slightly sideways step out of convention. It is a lifestyle that suits my laid back attitude and gives me the satisfaction of considering myself a bit of an old anarchist. In a nice, safe way. It certainly is life in the slow lane, and the kind of lifestyle that forces a more laid back attitude on you. There is no point fighting it, it will get you in the end.

It is my only source of heating, and I am actually very eco aware. Even burning renewable timber, my carbon footprint is tiny compared to anyone living in a house. My gas and electricity use is minimal, and you learn to recycle so I have very little waste. Do you live in a house?

I live in an apartment building in a city, (Buenos Aires, Federal Capital of Argentina)
I also bitch about the buses that leave a sooty trail as they go with their out of tune diesel engines, plus all the other derelict cars that transit our streets and roads in the whole country in general.
Of course given the state of poverty, it's almost impossible for many to trade their old models for new ones, or have repaired the ones they use which in most cases they need to make a living ... killing the planet as they go, a no win situation I guess

My fire complies with the Clean Air Act, and I only burn timber from renewable sources. People all over the country use wood burning stoves. The whole of the boating community have. I usually burn coal with just a little timber. It is how we keep warm. It is my only carbon footprint. I don't drive much and can't remember when I last flew, so I'm not going to beat myself up too much. I'm a good boy and am very keen on recycling. This is my only vice. I'd chase the people with the big 4 by 4 gas guzzlers who fly all over the world and burn huge amounts of energy at home in their 5 bedroom 3 bathroom houses.

Wood is the original carbon-neutral fuel. True, it releases carbon dioxide when it’s burnt, but the amount given off is the same as was stored by the tree when it was growing.

And, if the tree were left to rot in the woods it would produce the same amount of carbon emissions as are released by burning it.

Most firewood in this country comes from sustainable sources, so for every tree cut down another is planted, and the carbon released from the felled tree will be absorbed by another tree.

I use very little gas or electricity, and this is my source of heating. You wouldn't want me to freeze, would you?
