Another sketch of 's Violet and my character Jason. Just felt like taking a break from animating and wanted to draw these guys again! But now in their teens. These two really don't have to be a couple. Just good childhood friends who talk about anything with each other. Or however you like to see it.
Jason looks kinda creepy... Violet looks better.

God I'm a horrible friend, I meant to comment on this a few days later, then I forgot it since it wasn't in my inbox anymore.. I'm sorry Tic. <: ]
I love how much you can tell just from the line-art, Jason is so clean looking while it looks like Violet has a lot of sketchiness to her.. so either you had a hard time drawing her or you really LIKED drawing her. XD This isn't a complaint at all, I love the style you have here... you almost have your linework make a style of its own.
This is so so adorable, they look like they're such good friends don't they? I completely agree with your feelings on this, they don't look like they're in any kind of relationship.. they look like really really close childhood friends. I could imagine them walking down the neighborhood sidewalk on their way into town, maybe to stop at the corner gas-station store to pick up some hotdogs and slushies? ^^ hehe Or course being a girl, Violet's the chatty one here hahaha.. I so wonder what they're talking about! Aww I love that little gold heart neckless she has, I wonder who gave that to her. /: ) Still obsessed with 'bows' and 'pink' like she's always been she's so girly it's almost sickening. XD
I'm in awe at how you draw Violet, I really am. You've captured that teenager look SO well.. gah my style for her sucks. >< I'm SO stuck on drawing IZ style it's like no matter what I always draw heads too big and eyes too big.. she comes out looking like child Violet plopped on an adult body.. Oo But hopefully it only looks that way to me. -.-;
Don't beat yourself up about Jason in THE SLIGHTEST, man Tic he looks SO perfect. The expression, his hair, the adam's apple, those big thick eyebrows hehe.. just like with Violet you just somehow managed to get this perfect look of teenager into him. Sure he might look a little awkward or goofy, not at all creepy though. But you know what my bet is, I bet Violet like's his goofiness.. she strikes me as the kind of girl that'd get along better with the genuine maybe slightly awkward guy over the asshole muscle-bound jock guy. You know, Jason, he looks like the friendly and goofy kinda guy that'd make you laugh.. and we all know how girls love a guy that makes them laugh. ^^
You know, looking at it again, I think part of what makes this work is your body language, did you even do this intentionally? Their body language just matches their gender so well and kinda compares the differences with them side by side like that. Jason is nice and straight, kinda leaning ever so slightly to one side which if he's walking I'd imagine he'd be kinda 'man-hobbling' and he gives the impression of a strong confident boy. Meanwhile Violet, on top of being naturally smaller, shows this body-language that's very cute and vulnerable. The way she's leaning towards him, is very close to him, her head slightly tilted and looking into his eyes almost admirably not necessarily in a 'love' way but in a 'he's a boy' way.. if that makes any kind of sense. They look like they have a very close friendship boarderlining on something 'more' but they're either happy just being friends or are maybe afraid of ruining their friendship if a relationship didn't work out.
I LOVE your use of color here, you managed to use very warm bright colors on both of them while staying in the very separate boy and girl color ranges. I gotta ask, did you use any kind of very subtle pinkish-white glow from the bottom of the scene? It almost looks like there's a glow coming from down there. I'm amazed in both of these pictures that you did that you took the time to make backgrounds even if they are just patterns. I know you used a special brush but I still don't know how you made it a perfect circle like that. Oo Again going back to my 'walking down the sidewalk' story that spiral almost makes me imagine the heat waves of the hot Kansas sun behind them or something.
Whew.. what a blast that was to comment on! Anyway I hope this super comment made up for the delay. I WILL do something for you in return I promise <: D I just gotta get this comic in the home stretch first ok?

Aw, lol that's okay. Sometimes, I get distracted and forget to leave comments too. Then I'm like, "Where'd the tab for that drawing go?" lol
But I'm really excited that you like how this drawing of them turned out! I also enjoyed playing around with some gradients. That's why it looks like there's a light source that gives that glow. Whenever I get tired from animating I pull up photoshop and draw Violet. I love puffy hair and using her color scheme!
I like your IZ style for Violet. Giving her the big eyes adds to her charm! It almost looks like your style leans towards Phineas and Ferb a bit too. How the eyes in 3/4 view are drawn off the face.
For Violet's posture, I wanted to make her feel like she genuinely enjoy's Jason's company over most of the other guys her age. I don't imagine her to ignore the other boys but I feel she like's Jason the best. After knowing someone for so long, there are certain things you just can't tell other people. Now I want to draw them sharing fries or milkshakes with each other. Watching the stars somewhere with Pinky and/or Jason's car. lol
Don't worry about drawing something with them soon. Go for the comic all the way first!

I'm glad you understand, thank you. <: 3
You gotta love artist self-criticness.. sure it's annoying most of the time when you're trying to draw but it sure makes it a nice surprise when others say how amazing your art is. XD You're like "it is?" haha.. but yeah I don't know how much effort this actually took you to draw but no I LOVE these drawings..both of them. Your style is just SO adorable and warm.. I actually kinda wish I could draw in a style like yours.. my pictures would probably be even more emotional if I had half the expression skills you do. : /
Gradients.. yeah that's what I meant, ok so you did use those.. good I'm not seeing things.
You really like that style? <: ] Well if it's ok to you guys I guess I'm ok with it.. I guess I just wish I drew in a more rounded and soft style, but again IZ style is filled with sharp edges and the like.. I've tried making my own style but it's still based on that since I drew IZ for SO long. [link]
It sounds like we both have pretty much the same idea about her posture then. I wasn't implying that she ignores other boys.. just that she wasn't really the kinda girl who's into 'bad boys' like so many seem to be these days.
[link] [link] [link] I friggin love those retro buildings. XD
You know, since Jason's car is a hatchback I could totally see them sitting on his car's open hatch/rear bumper.
Aw you're really looking forward to the comic huh? Well that's VERY encouraging thank you! ^^

I actually don't know how the scraps feature works. Is it like watchers can see them only? I guess it's smarter putting the drawings in this category. Would they come up normally in the gallery?
Sometimes sketching for fun can be tough. I know some people that are like, "I haven't drawn anything for myself in so long." And I know a lot of artists that originally started by just drawing fan art. Honestly, I'm not too crazy with drawing fan art unless I try making it unique and play with proportions or something with it. Make it fun.
I don't want anything bad to happen to Violet! Oh no! She seems so sweet. Good guy + Violet = I wonder, which side does she lean towards? Non-confrontational or confrontational? She's so sweet that I wonder what gets her frustrated.
Omg, I laughed to myself about the scenario with playing house. Hope no one around there thinks I'm crazy now. lol Ok, first I love how Violet is the nurse. I don't know why I find that funny! I wasn't expecting that. I though at first she'd be the mom, or the aunt, or nanny. Second, the image of Pinky wearing a hat and lipstick. And, and the bubble-pipe! Omg, it's feels like an old memory has been dusted off from remembering those things! They were so cool and I can totally see Jason having one. lol These kids really went all out with this! And Jason's car with a binky! In size comparison, it would probably take up the car's face. Maybe. lol And hmm, Jason's car doesn't have a name. Hmm. I wonder what he calls it, it's never really addressed in the film so far. If I get the chance, I think it'd be fun to do little sketches of them playing house. I'd really like to see the bubble-pipe and the huge binky. Idk why but I picture Jason's car being wide-eyed and confused about the game they are playing. How old do you imagine them?
I'm glad it's not a motivational problem because that's really hard to recover from! Hope everything goes well.

You silly head! You don't know how scraps work? ^^ Aww ok well let me explain, man it's a good thing I know that now.. all the scrap-level awesomeness we're missing! Anyway, so the scraps is where you upload anything that you don't think is finished or worthy of your main gallery. You can upload a deviation to scraps when choosing the category.. I think it's the top selection. You can also move deviations into scraps by changing the category it's in. You can get to your scraps gallery from your main gallery page, it's a little link in the top bar on the top left. For example here's mine: [link] Here's the catch though. In order for your Watchers to get notifications of new scrap deviations they'll have to check the box saying to "watch scraps" when they +Watch you.. which by default is unchecked. So that most likely means only people who really love you (like me ) will see your scraps cuz they checked it. Looking forward to seeing some scraps of yours.
Well I guess technically I originally started with my own style, and even when I try emulating other styles for fanart I tend to insert my own style (whatever that is) into it.. making it kind of a hybrid style. I don't know what my style is really, cept for people.. how I draw people is my own.
Haha you know, before this final comic I probably would have leaned towards her being non-confrontational, but (slight spoiler) when she see's her dad giving Pinky away to Ernie's she gets on his back big time.
To be honest, Violet does seem ever so slightly a bit mary-sueish.. in the fact that she's so incredibly innocent. Maybe you don't think so, I mean everyone seems to really like her. But I've made a lot of the same character before though, Owen from my IZ fanart was the same kind of girl. I think I just base my nice girl characters off of the kind of girl I'd like to be in a relationship with. I just really like sweet innocent girls. But it would be nice to find a way to insert some flaws or whatnot into Violet to make her more realistic, though maybe it's too late in the story to do that.. I'm actually wondering if I'll still draw any pictures with Violet and Pinky even after Pinky's story is done.. I guess with the ending (classified) I have it could leave it open.. Oo I'll be interested to see what you think once you see it.
Maybe one good picture of little Violet throwing a fit about something would be good.
Nah people laugh at screens all the time, it's the national US pass time. lol WELL, if Violet was the mom I'd have to question why she 'birthed' a car. XD Though I guess I am forgetting that kids don't know where babies come from..but still, you'd think they'd make the connection that a baby car would come from Pinky right? I'm imagining very thrown together costumes, like Violet's nurse hat just being a cardboard cutout into the shape of one with a cross drawn on it in crayon, them wearing old clothes from the closet that are probably way big for them. XD Maybe Violet's mother has a whole chest full of second-hand clothes for Violet to put on and pretend with.. since Violet does love her dress clothes.. such a girl. XD Haha I could imagine the style of pipe Jason has being like.. maybe styled after an old corn-cob pipe and not really looking in place with the urban outfit and atmosphere they're 'pretending' in.
My god, the Binky would be that big? How big is Jason's car at the age you first drew them in? Is that when he was like toy sized? XD Omg the thought of his all wrapped up tight in cloth with this huge binky stuffed in his mouth and those big adorable eyes of his popping over the top of it.. god it just sounds even cuter now that you mentioned that. XD Should probably just draw a picture of that by itself!
Well maybe just for the ease of talking you can give Jason's car a name, that's what I did with the Worthless cars, they're not so much official names as more just.. titles. Like I don't even know if Violet addresses Pinky AS Pinky ever. XD Can't wait to see if and what you draw next.. I promise I'll draw some awesome stuff related to all this as well when I can.
I imagine them as the age they're in in the first picture you drew.. maybe a year younger? I'd say I dunno.. five?
I've definitely lost steam, but I'm still motivated..you know, still thinking about it and all. I'm just going slow and steady now. What's going to suck ass is having to go back over everything darkening the lines. ><

Ah, I see now. There's a couple of things I can store in the scraps category and clean up my gallery a little better. Look at all the extra drawings you have in this section! I'll have to fix my settings so I can see your scraps! Pinky getting a wash, all the praying mantis! Your IZ drawings are really cute. I know some of them are your characters, Owen yes? I like the one drawing of her(?) trying to buckle the belt. XD And real Christine! Man are you lucky! I've never been to a car show/meet up before. Would people say anything if you wanted to sketch their cars for a while? Idk if owners get iffy with personal space or having people around their car(s) for too long.
Ah ok, so there are some things that Violet will not stay quiet for. That's good. You're right, it shows what is really important to her. We do/did learn about the psychology of creating characters and making them more realistic in a couple of classes. The class that focused on creating our film idea was mainly about that. I have a couple of great pdfs that talk about fleshing out characters and developing ideas. They really helped me with my film. If you want, I can send them to you. There's a lot but I can send the better ones.
Aw, seeing them in big clothes would be so aborable! I can imagine Violet nabbing some clothes from her dad in secret and lending them to Jason to role-play. I like the idea of them "building" their props out of cardboard.
I guess the binky isn't that big after all. The first time I drew Jason with Violet, he is actually 12. In the film blog, there is a picture of all his ages and the youngest one is him as 4 years old. Maybe Jason should call his car Red, since it is red. Kinda playing on Pinky there too. lol
Do you sketch out all of your drawing on paper and scan them in? It seems like you do for most of your drawings. Do you have photoshop? Because there are a couple of ways you can adjust the image to darken your lines for you. I like using the Levels (Command/Ctrl L) and moving the bars around there. You can also adjust the Brightness, Contrast, and Exposure.

Yeah, you can clean up your gallery, you can also use your scraps to store pictures you just want to link to in the descriptions of your gallery pictures to explain something.. like a WIP or something. But yeah it is kind of a pleasant surprise when you find out one of your favorite artists has scraps you've gotten to ever look at : 3 it's kinda like deleted scenes or something. I thought you'd like some of those extra stuff in there, and I can't wait to see what you put up.
Well I haven't drawn canon IZ in a LONG time, so if you see any of my IZ art for probably the last 3 years they're gonna be my own characters. Owen, Plink, Nex-Kel, Zeep, Ukengrazer, Klaus, Tiera, Tina, Tiff ... all of those are my own characters. Man you wouldn't believe how popular I used to be, I used to be the king of IZ... fans kissing my feet.. it was wonderful. XD But then I decided to leave the fandom and now I have new car fans, you're one of them and I'm very happy to have you.
I actually went to a car show a while back, would you like me to put the pictures up? :3 There's a cute one with this smiling car and I'm all keeled down in front of it and it looks like we're talking. XD ANYWAY, don't feel bad about feeling weird about car-shows, I feel EXACTLY the same way.. I really do. It doesn't help that I've always felt award around car people thanks to High-School, motor-heads and jocks.. they both had kind of the same relationship with me.. the nerd. BUT I will say this, the CLASSIC car shows I've been too.. most of the owners are in their 40s-60s.. they're not like the punk idiot car guys you see around town.. they're intelligent, laid-back, and they have a deep respect for cars. I feel weird going up and asking people about their cars, but deep down you KNOW it's dumb because.. well.. that's kinda WHY they're there. XD
I'd say, just ask some questions about the car, or maybe even just say that you really like the car. Then once you feel comfortable say that you'd like to try drawing it. I bet it'd even be less awkward if you gave a reason.. like say you're in art school and you're trying to learn how to draw cars (which may or may not be true) then at least you have a reason. I don't see why they wouldn't like you to, as my mom says to me, they'd probably be humbled. These cars they restored, they feel the same about them as we do about our finished art.. it's something they worked really hard on.. But yes, I'd say at least ask if it's ok first.. that's my only advice. But I'm sure they'd be polite about answering and probably say go ahead.
I think that's a problem that's really been on my shoulders for a long time.. not really having characters that are flushed out completely.. I mean I'll have a basic personality based on say.. a stereotype (aren't most cartoons based on stereotypical characters? XD) I think the characters I've most been concerned about flushing out is the characters for my original Computer Cartoon idea.. heck I haven't even made the good guys in that show yet! I just love making villains.
Haha aww poor Violet's dad, will have to shake drive-way dust off his shirt. XDD Not to mention this is the second or more time Violet's stolen her mom's make-up to smear all over Pinky haha.
Oh yes, I know, I've seen that scale.. I've actually been keeping a close eye on your blog.. some of the stuff your uploading is just mindblowing! That voice-sync one is especially impressive, looks totally Disney quality I swear! But it was hard, as a watcher, knowing how old Jason was in that pic.. I'm sure you've got little details on him that say what age he is.. but I don't know them. Oh man, I wonder how young Jason actually was when he got "Red" ... much younger and the poor car would probably be the size of a match-box car or something. XD Soo cute!
Red... Reddy... Freddy[link] Teddy... Todd.. Oo oh the possibilities..
All my drawings are traditionally drawn, I scan them in, then fix all the smudging and stuff, darken the lines with levels, then I turn the line-art into a 'multiply' layer and draw all the colors underneath it. When I say 'darken the lines' I mean I gotta actually DRAW the picture. Right now all of my drawings are just light and sketchy... there's no way to get around it. XD It looks like this, cept even THIS was darkened with the levels tool: [link]

It is like looking through deleted scenes! But those are so great to find! I love checking out "behind-the-scenes" work. I might throw some character sketches and doodles for different things in the scrap section when I get the chance.
Wow! Did you get most of your pageviews from your IZ drawings? It sounds like it would make sense because when that show got picked up by Nick again around the same time, it revived a lot of its fans. And horray for both cars and IZ! They helped you grow as an artist.
Car shows! I need to get to one at some point in my life. Sure! I'd like to see some pictures of the different kinds of cars that show up in one! High school is always a rough experience. Ew. CLASSIC CARS. *wants a time machine/teleporter* Oh man! A place where just piles and piles of beautiful old cars that are still running and look like they rolled right off the lot! In real life! Personal pieces of living history with so many stories and experiences to tell! So awesome! I'd feel so nervous with all that awesome around! I must be really fun to listen to the owner's car stories and such! Conversations would sounds funny then, like, "Oh. Hey. Uh, nice car you got there. Yeah. So uh, cool, looks great....... Yeap." lol
You're right. They are kinda like pieces of art. How much time and effort us artists put to our drawings is the same for them about reviving their cars. That's a neat connection. I will ask however if it okay to draw them though! Thanks for the heads up.
I remember someone saying that if you draw/develop the villain first, the other characters can gain much more depth because you base them around the threat of your story. I did that for one of my show ideas (about pirates lol) and it was really interesting working that way! I thought the concept sketches of the villain came out really cool. (might add that into the scraps) I'll definitely send you the PDFS, there's a couple though so it might be in multiple emails.
Thanks for following my blog! I try not to post everything on the film so once the film goes up, it can be a surprise for everyone. Also, if I ever enter it into film festivals, I can only have 10% of the film online, so I actually might have to take down a couple of things! But I won't in the meantime until the film is entirely finished. Sorry for the age confusion. If you follow the picture where Jason has his ages from right to left he goes from 4 (and pjs), 8 (and pjs), 12, and 18. Idk how old he was exactly when he got Red. One of my first ideas was, Jason was 4 and supposed to be coloring a car in his coloring book. Then his dad comes into his room and gives him Red as a present. But that was going to add a lot of animation so I had to take it out. But you can think of it like, that idea was the day before where the film starts. lol
Wow! You must draw very light then! I guess there isn't another way of doing it then, just gotta draw the picture. Bah!

You know I think you can upload video as well I've seen people do it.. DA has like it's own video player. You might be able to put up that WIP stuff for your movie that you have on your blog! You know.. if you wanted to. o.o
I think you'd be surprised how long the IZ fandom survived after the show got cancelled.. it like seriously JUST started petering out at the end of last year. You actually first saw my gallery AFTER I'd packed up my IZ stuff way into it's folder. If you look, a majority of my art is IZ.. just look. XD If you can tolerate IZ.. you might enjoy my Owen and Plink series.. it's a very cute love story.
You're only in your 20s right? I'm pretty sure you'll get a few opportunities to get to a car-show at some point before you die. XD Ok I'll go ahead and put them up, I think you'll like them. Ooh yes, believe me, I've had the SAME dream. How wonderful it'd be to go back to the 50s 'Back to the Future' style and see all those cars in their prime. It's almost hard to imagine such beautiful things EVERYWHERE just in every day life you know? Though admittedly, if I did that I'd probably be sad to.. knowing the cars I'm looking at are probably rotting in some junkyard in the time I came from.. <: / GAH gotta stop being depressing! >< >O; ... Er anyway, you know what the true pity is? We actually could have had a REAL 50s car.. like.. preserved.. all original.. no miles on it.. have you heard of Ms. Belvedere? I found out about her from my days in the Christine fandom. She was this brand new 58 Belvedere that this town buried in this cement casket along with other 50s objects and stuff.. it was a time capsule. Heh the funny thing is they EVEN packed tanks of gasoline in her back seat because they didn't even know if we'd be useing gasoline anymore in the futuristic year of 2007. XD Here's a picture of when she was being put away: [link] But ...sigh... UNFORTUNATELY.. due to construction or Earth movement or something.. the cement cask cracked open underground and let the whole thing fill with ground water. >< So when we finally unearthed her in 2007 she looked like this: [link] .. now she's still being treated like the rare gem she is.. people are actually working to restore and derust her.. but still... she's no better then any other Belvedere we could fix nowadays.. probably even worse. : / It's a shame.. a big shame.. There are actually videos on youtube of the disappointing reveal.
But yeah, back to car shows, it's definitely easier to find stuff to talk about when you're a car expert I'm sure. XD But you can ask stupid questions too.. hehe that's mostly what me and my mom did. They're happy to answser it all..
No problem, glad to help. But yeah.. not only is it a lot of work for them, it's a lot of money too. XD
Hmmm well that's encouraging, maybe I'm not working backwards after all. : ) Maybe when I get those PDFs I'll know how to proceed with the heros of the story. XD
Yeah I can understand that, you don't want people to see everything, then the finished product wont be that special. XD Well it WILL be but you know what I mean. I think you shouldn't show hardly any of it once you start coloring it in.. that'll make the most drastic difference I think. I wouldn't be surprised if your video gets into festivals.. I mean it's very impressive for a collage project I think. I really think you're gonna go places girl. : )
Oh, well I guess that makes sense why Jason was so excitedly playing with Red at the beginning of the story.. if he'd just gotten him you know? I wonder if his dad bought Red from like.. some old gypsy or something and that's why he's magic. XD You know, if you ever get spare time you should draw what his parents look like.. that'd be cool to see. Maybe sometime down the road I could even draw a pic with the two families visiting at a pic-nic or something, while Violet and Jason are playing together. That'd be kinda cool..
Very bah... -.-;

I remember when IZ was insanely popular back in the day! I loved how cooky GIR was. I remember this one part, I forget what happens, but Zim orders GIR to do something and GIR just walks to the window, and jumps out. Idk why but I remember that being hilarious!
I've never heard of this Belvedere story before. That sounded like such a cool idea to put all those things in a time capsule and a car with that! So pretty! But now it's like the Titanic but car form! It's sad but still pretty cool that this actually happened. Today I Learned.
Thanks! I'm probably going to do that with not showing much colored animation online. I might show some mood paintings/drawings, concept coloring, and color script though just so people can get a better idea of what art direction I'm trying to put the film in.
The parents do show up in the very last shot but it's the back view of them. XD I wasn't really planning on drawing them in entirety but Jason gets his cow-lick from his mom. A family picnic! Fun times!

I believe that was the Halloween episode you're talking about, Zim commands Gir to attack Dib but instead he walks across the room and jumps out the window. XD
Oh don't get me STARTED on Titanic, the poor girl got sent to the bottom of the ocean forever without even finishing her first trip, friggin' tragic!
Maybe you can show some colored single frame pictures from your movie : ) like maybe a pic of Red in the garage or something.. that would work right?
I see he does haha. XD
