    We ran forward at the same time, our movements perfectly synchronized, galloping without touching the ground, accelerating more and more, seeing those candy canes become a blur. Our hearts raced as we gained speed, thumping at the same rhythm. Our bells rang at the same frequency. The music rushing through our minds told us how to dance and how to move, filling our hearts and our bodies with joy.
    For a brief instant, I was Trisha, filled with determination, looking upwards to the night sky. For another brief instant, I was Pam, looking at my own rear and blushing with how cute my tail was.
    Then, a swarm of emotions from every other reindeer filled me as our minds collapsed into one and it wasn’t possible to say who was who anymore. Just like our bodies had been synchronized, so did our thoughts, turning into the sum of our joy, happiness, warmth and all things good, letting aside and vanishing with our fears, shame, regrets and everything bad.
    At my last instant as myself, I smiled and closed my eyes…
    I wasn’t alone anymore…
    At the end of the candy road, we turned upwards, reaching for the skyes, our eyes shining with the spark of the stars and our hearts beating with a strong resolve to deliver a special christmas to everyone. All families were our family. Every house was our house. Every dad and mom in the world were our parents. Every boy and girl were our siblings.
    Oh that beautiful music playing in our heads!
    We soared over the city accompanied by its melody…
    We smiled and laughed…
    We sang along with the song…
    Our voices in perfect harmony…
    Painting the sky with our music…
    Filling the world with joy…
    Experiencing those strong emotions as one being…
    Each feeling multiplied by the sum of us all…
    A happiness impossible to describe...
    We flew above the city, pulling a sled filled with presents. From time to time, one elf would grab a small bag and jump with a parachute, ready to deliver dozens of presents to every house in the block and every apartment from the buildings.
    Just thinking about the surprised faces all those families would make when they woke up the next morning filled us with bliss. We were part of christmas!
    Once in a while we would cross paths with other reindeers and other elves who were also delivering presents in the region. They wished us a merry christmas and so did we, in unison, each herd its own entity. Each herd it’s own collective of blissful minds.
    When every elf except for one had already jumped, the last one held the reins and whistled. The music in our heads changed rhythm and the sky road that was guiding us changed directions.
    We kept following...
    We kept singing...
    We kept smiling...
    The music and the colorful road led us to another delivery station, with an equally long corridor of illuminated candy canes telling us where to land. We reduced our speed and began our slow descent, the music in our heads getting calmer, our hearts beating lighter. The adrenaline going away. The music was vanishing, harder and harder to listen to.
    As the sled touched the snow, we all stopped after a few meters, our hooves getting closer to the ground with each passing second as the magic that made us fly faded away.
    I was Pam, reaching for air, exhausted but also thrilled.
    Then I was Trisha, looking back to see if I was alright.
    When my hooves finally touched the cold ground, I was unable to hear the music anymore. All I could hear was the soothing wind and the heavy breathing from every other reindeer around me.
    I was exhausted!
    I bent my four legs and rested on my chest, trying to recover my energies.
    My heart was pumping violently and my mind was racing with confusion.
    I was Emily again… I was myself…
    My body and my thoughts were mine again.
    “What just happened?”
    Merging with the herd was scary at first, but now I longed to become one with it again. Such was the bliss, such was the joy, I felt so complete! That made me whole! It was the best thing I had ever experienced in my life! It was like feeling the happiness of a dozen people all at the same time!
    I didn’t even judge Pam anymore for liking it!
    I was in love with that feeling too!
    No wonder she came back there every year.
    — How are you, Emily? — asked Trisha, patting my head with her cushion-like hoof — Did you enjoy your first time?
    — Gosh! That was… — I had no words to describe it — That was so intense and wholesome and powerful and… and…
    — Hey hey! — Pam laughed — Calm down, Emily! Or you won’t last until the end of the night.

    — I’m just having silly thoughts.
    The voice from Pete, the elf, echoed again:
    — One more minute of resting before the next trip! Get ready!
    — How many more travels are we going to make?
    I looked at Trisha, but Pam responded instead:
    — As many as necessary to deliver presents for the whole world.
    — THE WORLD?
    — Calm down, Emily — Trisha gave Pam a stern look — There are thousands of stations around the world. We’ll probably be done in four or five more trips — she smiled — But I’m sure when it ends you’ll definitely wish it lasted longer.
    The music came back...
    I looked ahead and straightened my body…
    I could feel that warmth again…
    I could feel our bodies connecting again…
    Our breaths and heartbeats at the same pace…
    My thoughts slowly faded away as our minds leaked into the same river of clear waters and calm currents. Just like a drop of paint, my mind diluted into the river, merging with the rest until there was no trace left of that initial drop. Little by little I disappeared once again with all the other drops of paint from every other mind. Our colors combined into one.
    Pam’s mind was the first one to touch me. I saw her human self alone in a dark bedroom, browsing endless drawings of humans transforming into animals. The next instant, I was her! I felt the blood rushing through my face as my mind became as excited as hers. But then, I understood how lonely she was. Nobody in her personal life understood her. She craved for another oddball like herself.
    A moment later, Trisha’s mind flowed into me and Pam. Our thoughts merging into a pool as the three of us slowly became one... Our hearts opened up and laid bare every secret within our souls. But I wasn’t ashamed anymore. I wanted them to know me. They saw my childhood memories from when I received the pony plushie. They saw my mom and dad. They understood how much I longed for those times again. Trisha’s motherly mind embraced both me and Pam. It felt like resting on my mommy's arms.
    Then another mind came in…
    And another one…
    Soon there wasn’t me, Pam or Trisha anymore…
    We were just one with the rest…
    We had become the herd again...

    Every other reindeer kept singing and smiling. Meanwhile I looked around confused and cold. I wanted to go back to the herd! I somehow had disconnected!
    I felt a sudden weight as a Pete, carrying a bag of presents, mounted on me.
    — Delivery time — he said.
    — W-what?
    I heard a click around my waist and an instant later I was disconnected from the sled. The rest of the reindeers continued to fly across the night, disappearing into the clouds. Their music became more distant until it eventually vanished into the silence of the night. Meanwhile I was left there, floating on my own with Pete on my back.
    — Could you please get us to the ground, sweetie?
    — S-Sorry!
    I didn’t know how, but I managed to float myself down slowly, flying magically on my own by instinct, until my hooves reached the sidewalk in a strangely familiar road.
    — Thanks for your help — he smiled — Let me take this bridle off your face.
    — Why are we here?
    — I’m delivering presents — he laughed, then proceeded to remove the bridle, while still mounted on my back.
    — I meant… Why am I down here and not with the rest? I want to go back! I was happy with the others!
    — There is always next year — he jumped from my back and I immediately felt my four legs begin to tremble and bend.
    — This isn’t my house — I said, barely able to stand on my fours as the limbs started to change , compromising my balance.
    — That’s where I was supposed to deliver you — he shrugged, holding a bag of presents on his shoulder — Merry christmas Emily. I hope to never see you again.
    — Hey! That’s rude! — I protested, falling down on the snow. Squirming and rolling as that strong itch spread all over my body when the fur receded back into the skin.
    — If I never see you again, it means you are not spending christmas alone anymore… Unless you actually want to come back for delivery next year.
    — Oh! — I blushed with my stupidity — Sorry…
    He kept looking at me as I transformed back into a human. Which got me a bit uneasy at first, but his eyes were so pure and devoid of malice that I was fine with it. To be honest, I was happy he was there with me. His presence made the transformation less scary.
    When my hind hooves became feet and my front hooves became hands, I was finally able to get up, dizzy at first from all that time walking on my fours. The snout retracted into my face like a deflating balloon. The red round nose became a regular nose. The antlers vanished inside my skull. The ears shrinked and returned to their original position. I looked back and touched my tail, saying goodbye to it as that tiny brush or fur disappeared, brushing against my butt. I was human again, without a hint that I was ever a reindeer in the first place.
    — Atchoo! — I was also naked in the middle of a winter night.
    — You better put on these — he offered me a pack of green clothes, which I immediately put on before I froze to death.
    — T-thanks…
    — Now, if you excuse me, I’ve got a job. Merry Christmas, Emily! — he turned his back to me and walked to the next house, jumping on the roof and going down the chimney.
    I blinked twice and rubbed my eyes, unsure if I was dreaming…
    Unsure if that whole night had really happened...
    I gazed at the door in front of me and took a deep breath. I knocked on it twice and, after a few seconds, it opened and a woman on her fifties rushed to hug me:
    — Emily!
    — Hi mommy — I hugged her back, resting my face against mother's shoulders. I was unable to hold my tears anymore.
    — It’s good to see you after such a long time. What a christmas miracle!
    — I’m sorry… I didn’t bring any presents!
    — Don’t worry my dear! — she hugged me tightly — I already received my present from Santa this year.
    — W-what did you ask him for?
    She laughed and pinched my nose, like she always did when I was young.
    — I asked him to bring my daughter back home.
