And with the design of Spike's tail, it also surprises me his pants don't constantly fall to the floor.

Not ruthless killers? Rainbow Dash, apart being a really obnoxious person so far, just killed five security guards (confirmed) plus all the others aboard the big Patrol Boat. Not to mention Rarity literally flipping the entire boat upside down and drowning the entire crew, most likely.
If that is not being a ruthless kiler, then what is?

I guess I misunderstood the earlier pages. Rainbow especially didn't seem to express much remorse. I will read them again. Maybe its just me.

No... its made pretty clear that she is. Ch3 pg9 depicts rainbow as rather heartless. Rarity's reaction to getting her boot damaged is no better from a moral perspective. At least rainbow only targeted threats. Rarity either killed everyone on that boat or left them to the mercy of the sea.
I'm not saying that darker themes are bad in and of themselves even for a My Little Pony comic. The art is great and the story is good enough to keep me looking forward to the next page. I am a fan of this. However, I think Fluttershy being so seemingly kind, without even commenting on the conduct of her dearest friends is...a valid nitpick.
Its still very near Fluttershys into so any amount of moral introspection isn't something that anyone should ask for this early, from this character.
Honestly, I wouldn't even go this much into it if Pia-sama hadn't stated that they aren't supposed to be perceived this way. Again maybe I'm the only one who sees it like this but, in my opinion, as they are depicted thus far... Rarity and Rainbow are cold. (im not too sure about Applejack)
Rarity looks like a sociopath and rainbow comes across as a jaded psycho. I know they aren't displaying traits that are far off what the show depicts but when you add the entire taking sentient life thing... that change in context really changes what these characters are.

You are quite right, they both kill with less hesitation than one puts into deciding breakfast. They are either mercenaries or pirates who kill without mercy or regret. It's not even up for debate considering they attacked a ship without provocation and proceeded to murder everyone on board. Except Spike of course, after all the show must go on. It would stand to reason that for Fluttershy to so casually be the friend and accomplice of these murderers than she too must be way off the deep end. Though she probably won't be and there will be some contrived reason for them to not seem like villains, my money is on them being part of some resistance to overthrow Celestia.

I wouldn't look TOO much into it, there's still a TON of story left, we're still in arc 1 bro. Secrets will be learned, truths uncovered, facts instated. Who knows? Perhaps it seems this way, but has anyone really asked if they enjoy it? I guess what I'm trying to say is be patient, please. You may or may not be pleasantly surprised :3
