Description My first start from scratch pattern! All original its mine and I love it! Four legged animals like horses, deer, giraffes always seem like the hardest to do in crochet and make them look realistic. There are a few patterns out there for deer but they never looked like what I wanted. So I buckled down and made it like I wanted! The rest of this description is me being super excited and rambling about why I made it. You can stop here if you want haha.

I think it might be me hanging on to childhood but whenever I make something like this I always think first, how can I make this in a way I can play with it. haha. My favorite thing about toys as a kid was their posability. One of my favorites was a bendy wire dog named Bender. I got it from Barnes and Noble when I was younger and I played with it so much all the legs broke. So when I made this, the first thing I thought of was posability.

It is completely posable with a 2 strand twisted wire skeleton. If I was going to go through all the effort I wanted to be able to pose it! And what and effort it was to make this guy. Lots of ripped out stitches but it was worth it, it makes me appreciate the people I buy other patterns from.

When I make crochet things from patterns I kind of cringe at ones that are a bunch of tubes of different sizes stuck together. Where is the art in that. I wanted it to be smooth and solid as possible. Body and neck are one piece, shaped to go from big body to small neck, angled in a way that makes a chest. I only used one color so I could get the design down first and then go back and add where the color changes need to be.

The back legs though have to be my favorite. Deer and Horses have huge muscles and making them have pencil legs didn't feel right. No one I had seen had made a good example for me to follow so I had to wing it. I love the result. When you bend the back leg it really looks like that huge muscle.

I hope you enjoy seeing him as much as I enjoyed making him. More pictures and poses soon!

Haha~ I'm glad you're getting a lot of attention.
And I would love one. How much do you sell them for? I'll try and work it into my -notbillsorfood- budget.

He is truly fantastic! Do you sell patterns, or do you post them somewhere? I'd love to have a go at this guy, he looks wonderful - congratulations on the pattern.

Thank you! I am so proud of him These deer are my best things yet! I am working on changing the pattern so that I will have versions for a Buck, Doe and Fawn. I probably will sell them in the future but I don't know when. When you put the pieces together you have to do it in a certian way or the back legs wont bend correctly. Plus the wire has to be put in at the same time you sew on the legs. Its kind of hard to explain I need to make it easier before I can sell it. When I do though I will let you know!

Thank you so much! The legs are what I am the most proud of. I hadn't seen any pattern avalible that had back legs similar to that so I had to make my own. I'm so proud I am going a little crazy with ideas of what to make next with it. There are so many options!

Thank you! I think they might be my favorite part. Getting the back legs to curve like that was what I wanted most out of the design.

He is my favorite one I have made, maybe because it is my first pattern completely made by me. There will be more to come! Hopefully I will get a family done soon. I cant wait to make the little fawn, those spots are going to be hard but so cute!

It does feel awesome! I think my brain is taking the idea and trying to run away with it though, I want to make versions of it for Reindeer, Elk and Moose too haha. One step at a time Brain! Hopefully I will have all 3 of the deer family done by Monday!

Great job!! I know how much works it takes to make a pattern all of your own.

How tall is he?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pickleweasel360 In reply to StitchedLoveCrochet [2012-04-17 19:58:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It was a lot of work but I figured if I was going to put a lot of effort into it then it should be of something I have never seen before

Standing normally, not including his antlers, he is 6 inches tall from front hoof to top of his head. If you stretch his neck and head out he is 8 1?2 inches from nose to tail tip.

You did a great job on this, bends in all the right places.
Would you be willing to share your pattern (if you can remember it?)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pickleweasel360 In reply to SilverTwilight05 [2012-04-17 20:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Putting in the right bends was one of the main reasons I did this, before all I see when looking for animals like this is long tubes sew on in a way that they would flop around and be a toy mostly. Thats fine some time cute is what you are going for over realism, but I never saw a realistic one.

I actually am trying to figure out how to make PDF files so it can be my first pattern I sell on Etsy. I figured I worked hard enough on it and its better than my others, why not? Once I do though I will put a link to it for anyone interested.

That's great, it is definitely of good enough quality to purchase. It has just the right mix of realism and cuteness. Good luck!

Thank you! I try to do new things all the time! Part of my family came up from Alabama this weekend and they are big hunters, so I decided to make this in honor of them.
