Exactly. As much as I want an alternative ending, I don't want it to be the replacement ending as, regardless of losing Ashi in the end, Jack has a bright new future ahead of him now that his quest was finally completed and he will find love once again (I'm speaking to you, cricket-chasing girl.)

Yes, definitely. Her sacrifice is what saved the future. And that is what this comic is about, what this new future holds. As much as I love Jack and Ashi being together, I thought the bitter sweet ending was still fitting to the story.
