Description
Sorry I haven't uploaded anything for quite some time now - I kinda decided to take a little "study break" regarding drawing, heh. But, basically it means that I have finally accepted and understood the use of references, which I now use myself. I have to say, it really does help. If only I did it sooner
Anyway, I thought I'd make another drawing of my OC, sitting on a hot summer's day. Haha
I tried to improve the colours this time round. I also (like, when I was almost finished), decided to kinda change techniques (using airbrush etc) and at the same time work on "painting" a lot neater.
One thing I still think sucks is the hair, but I'll just have to improve on it.

Same here. I should have used references in the past. What I do is thoroughly observe my surroundings and then later draw from the mind's stored reference viewed using the "mind's eye".
I think the coloring looks good and the hair is great! Better than what I can do digitally. Hair isn't something I'm the best at. It's something I must improve on traditionally and digitally and shadows as well.
I like this one a lot. Keep up the good work, my friend

Hehe.
Well, that was my exact attitude towards it. However, I find that it's not actually the best way to draw. Even if you have something really vivid in your imagination, it will be difficult to get it onto paper/canvas.
The way I see it, is that having references helps because you can see the images as you're drawing, so you don't have to imagine it as you're drawing. Also, when I use references, I find myself paying a lot more attention to detail and learning more. Improvising on the reference image is also educational and fun. It sometimes makes you realize just how talented the artist you're referencing is (if it's a good reference).
I believe though that after time with practice you'll generally need to use references less and less, although from what I hear even professional artists use them frequently. Anyway.
Thanks!!! I will!

I agree with you 100%! (^_^)
Reference is really important in order to improve your drawing skills. Look at my drawing of "Ima". The door is a copy of the bathroom door in front of my room
Ima is entirely from my thoughts. Drawing is getting way easier for me recently especially after planting the seven elements of art in my head, keeping them in mind whenever I draw something new! c:

Oh, cool! Haha.
I heard a cool quote on a video tutorial: "Everything is a remix". It kinda sums up referencing nicely, I think.
I like to think of creating something as building a wall: memories are the bricks, imagination and creativity is the cement.
