Pika-la-Cynique β€” Positive Vibes for 2012

Description ... while I don't subscribe to the Mayan end-of-times prophecy for 2012 (December 21 is 'The Hobbit' release, the world can't end then!), I do feel horribly cynical and a little depressed at the way some things are looking up ahead for the world (you know - financial meltdown, Big Money getting away with everything, the rise of the far-right parties here in Europe, the head-banging obscurantism and reactionary sexist, poverty-bashing attitudes coming from the Republican candidates, SOPA and its ilk....) .... despite being guardedly optimistic about my personal situation ... and, more whimsically, I can't help but wonder if the sheer amount of expectations that something is due to happen in 2012 won't somehow, in some Discworldian-power-of-human-belief rules-of-narrative-causality twist, cause something to actually happen...

Anyhoo. In the light of all that, best wishes to all.

LOL, like it. I don't subscribe to the 2012 end of days prophecy, by my niece will be 21 on 12-21-12...we plan to have a happy end of the world birthday blowout! Since she can legally drink that day, I've been teasing her, saying she can drink as much as she wants, since she won't have to worry about a hangover the next day...the next day that will not happen...dum de dum dum DUMMMMM.

I prefer to to think of it as not the end of THE world in a literal sense, but as a metaphorical end to how things are, the end of OUR world, kinda like a renewal or some such. Of course that could just be because my little brother turns 18 on that day (also the Winter Solstice and Yule) and it would be a damn tragedy if the world ended on his 18th and the 18th birthday of a few hundred other kids across the world. I'm planning on waking up at 00:01 and pointing at the sky and laughing.

I think the poor bastard who made the calendar just got sick of all those equations and decided that a few thousand years was pretty impressive for a calendar, I mean think about it, our's only last one year.

That and apparently a lot of theirs were reusable calendars, you simply go back to the start of it when you reach the end.

Either way, not much use panicking, we can't do much about it

I vaguely remember hearing about a prophet who predicted the end of the world through the Popes and I think that's coming up on us too... What is it about the early second millennium that inspires all these doomsday predictions?

The power of thought is a strange and wonderful thing and I hope all these expectations don't throw off the trajectory of the planet or something similar (unless we all survive and get super powers because that would be awesome). Between the imminent end of the world and the current state of the world I'm feeling more than a little nervous! But as Granny Darke would say: "If you can fix a problem, fix it; if you can't, stop worrying about and get on with your life".

I guess it's the faith, trust and pixie dust approach for me. Happy 2012!

The pope prophecy was Notradamus. He prodicted the last pope dieing. He also predicted that the new pope would be assainated this year after a failed attempt. I believe 2012 is is the year of te birth of the third anti Christ. Notradamus predicted the coming of two previous anti christs. Hitler and of course Voldamort.

What's funny is that there was a mistranslation in a lot of the texts concerning the prophecies made around the ancient world for 2012; many of them said that a new era would be ushered in, not that the end of the world would smack us with brimstone and fire. Sad that mistranslations can cause conspiracy theorists to panic, eh?

I have a more firm belief in political end around 12-21-2012 than I do the world blowing up in some way or another unless it's caused by man (and I can see this happening, sad to say). With the way things are going lately, as you said, that's what it's starting to point to; political destruction.

That aside, a happy good year to you as well, through whatever will be thrown at us.

Yes whilst I don't take the Mayan take all too seriously I do feel that all the expectations of something will inadvertedly(?) cause for something to happen. But not a meteor... because technically we started counting the years 4 years early so we still have four years before the Mayan prophecy should occur (fun fact I learnt in history class).

People are misinterpreting that Mayan calendar thing - it's not that it's predicting the world is going to end, it's just that that calendar is ending it's particular cycle and is due to start afresh. That's what someone told me anyhow, something kind of like running through the twelve zodiac - the world doesn't end when you do, you just start over again.

The Maya did not predict the β€œend of the world” on December 21, 2012. That date simply happens to be 13.0.0.0.0 on the Long Count calendar, marking the end of the 13th β€œbaktun” (a calendar unit that is 144,000 days long) and starts the beginning of the next baktun. The ending of such a cycle would warrant a really big New Year celebration, which is exactly what the ancient Maya did.

Et maintenant la question est: les Maya ont-ils prΓ©vu la fin du monde capitaliste (Γ  dΓ©faut de fin du monde "matΓ©riel")???

BLAH! The world ain't gonna end, i read the national geographic article on it. It doesn't say the worlds gonna end. The translation reads that the Mayan God is supposed to come back to earth that day. It even goes on to say that there are more predictions made by the Mayans after that. So how those simple minded morons got 'end of the world' from that idk.

I agree. I sincerely doubt the world is actually going to end this year. However, I worry that it might turn into a self-fullfilling prophecy. People might overreact and do something stupid and harmful to themselves and/or others.

Unfortunately that is soo true. The last couple of times someone predicted the end of the world a bunch of people committed suicide cause the bought into it. People get soo caught up in the idea that what is on TV or the internet is true, that they don't bother to find out the actual truth. Kinda sad to say the least. They really need to stop putting that stuff out there cause of those type of people. I'm surprised that someone hasn't gotten sued over the deaths. It's kinda scary. One was a mother of twins, she soo thought that the world was ending she tried to kill both her daughters then herself. Urg, I believe in freedom of press, but really there needs to be a limit on those type of things. Especially if someone is gonna go nuts and either kill themselves or someone else.

Mayan one: "Oh, I guess we'll have to end it...here! On 2012!"
Mayan two: "But wait, won't people think that's the end of the world if we stop the calendar there?"
Mayan One: "Ha! That's going to freak someone out someday!"

I figured the Mayans had just finished mapping out this millennium and the Conquistadors interrupted the brain-storming session that was to create the next.

On a darker note, maybe the last of their race/blood finally diluted out and died on that day.

Still - fun picture, though morbid idea. Love it.

As far as I have heard, the Mayan's prophecy of 2012 simply marks the end of an era, not the world. However, that doesn't mean that SOMETHING won't happen. There's always the possibility of the unexpected to occur, but who's to say that that unexpected occurrence wouldn't have happened any other year? The way I look at it, just live life to the fullest, make the best of each year and if the world decides to end, at least you've lived a fulfilling life. That's all.

Well people out there who think the world is going to end at that time are stupid. in the bible it say's
" you will not know the day when the end is"

I am very upset on how many people kill them self's every year thinking the world is going to end, they want to kill them self's. because the don't want to suffer.

Well if you are a "Christian" you will not suffer.
You will not go to hell.
When the world end's you will not expect it. you will fall asleep and your spirit will go to heaven.
