I know I'm super late but thank you, just thank you.
I tried to find tutorials on different ways to draw transformers and couldn't find next to nothing!

Faving this, it's simple it's effective..and just something about knowing someone can take pen to paper and doodle away, no erasing, no second guessing the design as it comes, and come out with something nice looking is reassuring to me .w.

pika In reply to gigaworks [2018-05-27 19:45:21 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you. The lightly drawn circles underneath really helped me with all that. Even if it is drawn with a pen, and looks sketchy, that doesn't mean it was done quickly, remember that! I did have a lot of second-guessing, but instead of drawing the lines, I did the 'drawing' of the line in the air above the paper, finding 'directions' with the imagined ghost line where it might look good. When the ghosting clicked and felt good, I'd draw line there. Of course practice makes better. I like scribbling with pen a lot because it shows the very raw form of my art and how I do it. There's no erasing so if I want to do something different, it would be either starting all over or redrawing next to the sketch only the certain part that requires changing.Β

PS. That is the very reason the alt-mode looks so wonky. I don't draw vehicles well, and I haven't practiced them either, so even second-guessing and ghost lining didn't help much at all. Β

I love this tutorial so much! But I have a quick question, do you have any tips on self designing an alt mode? I understand if it's not easy to explain for, I have issues drawing cars

pika In reply to Solzear [2017-08-21 08:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

When it comes to alt-mode designing, one actually has to have good understanding of how different types of vehicles work, and a bit of laws of physics and how to break those laws while still making it all look plausible!Β

For example car usually has four wheels and undercarriage that has everything built on top of it. Then depending on the car's purpose it might have doors for passengers or none at all. Does the car have a purpose other than being able to travel from point A to B fast? Is it a scanned vehicle like bots scan cars for alt-modes on Earth, or is it a Cybertronian car instead? Do you want the car to have more aerodynamic shape or more boxy shape? The more aerodynamic, aka smooth curves and spoilers and winglets that keeps it on the ground instead of flying (like F1 or other sports cars. At this point is good to check the purpose of all those winglets and everything to know better why they exist in a car design. Google is your best friend), or boxed like a tank type.Β

One way to practice drawing cars is to draw still-life cars. (from photos, go sit down near parking slot and draw the cars you see ect.) Work your perspectives, work on your understanding of why a tire functions as it does and where is it located. Ect.

When you have the basic understanding of a vehicle and how they function, they're a lot easier to turn into Cybertronians. "Where does the wheel area go? How should I put doors on the bot? How about rest of the alt-mode bits that I think look cool should go?"Β

All in all there's a lot of questions you have to ask, and answer as well! I hope this helps at least a little.

Practice makes better. There's no such thing as 'perfect' even if person is perfectly satisfied with what they've produced. Enjoy YouTubeing! ^^

FINALLY!
A tutorial with the human-esc proportions!
I've been having trouble with that part >.<
I always see tutorials of the actual building part of the tf fc,
but i don't see the different options on the "human-esc" part.....

pika In reply to Stella-AkiraTH [2016-09-19 19:12:19 +0000 UTC]

Only the example is with "human proportions" to show the easiest shape most of us are familiar with. Besides I'd recommend to avoid human shapes as far as the proportions go when one makes TF fan characters. Otherwise they'll just end up looking like humans with armor on and... well, that's not a robot anymore, now is it?

i love seeing process drawings like this. I wonder how many people go about designing transformers in the same way. it seems so much more involved and well thought-out than how i do it.

I kinda just go "well... this guy has ____ alt mode so..." *throws parts at body* "aaaaand success!"Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to WillMangin [2016-05-23 08:43:04 +0000 UTC]

Your method works just as fine! This tutorial is just how I do things. No way I'm telling that everyone has to do it the exact same way. ^^/

lol no worries. i definitely didn't take it as a "this is how i do stuff and you should too". i just like noticing the differences. i LOVE seeing other artist's creative processes!Β

SoundWaver1984 [2016-05-19 01:43:43 +0000 UTC]

Somehow it's even harder becoz it's in TFP style, but I'll still support

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to SoundWaver1984 [2016-05-23 08:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this is TFP style, that's for sure. But to me TFP style is easier than that of IDW for example. TFP style forgives more of "design flaws" because of layer dressing and the fact that alt-mode can be basically anything. Β

IDW bots for example doesn't have that much flexible armor shapes like TFP. Best example would be Knock Out's hood with the head lights! In the bot mode they're round, in alt-mode it is a lot flatter!

Thanks and you're welcome! Yeah, this tutorial definitely isn't for someone who wants to learn to draw. It can give them pointers thought where to go and how to think at certain points and help that way. But hey, if one finds this useful for them, I'm happy!

BlitzwingKisses [2016-05-18 16:45:45 +0000 UTC]

This is a really cool way to go about it. Usually I would try deciding on the alt mode first and figuring out what parts go where and what the kibble would be, but this seems like it would be a really fun route to go! Thanks for posting this!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to BlitzwingKisses [2016-05-23 08:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks and you're welcome! The tutorial is more of Transformers Prime style than G1 or any else. It works either way. This is just how I do things most often and I've noticed many who design fan characters don't pay attention to the alt-mode at all. To them it's enough to have door wings or a random wheel here and there.

The more kibble there is in bot form, the more "design" for alt-mode is already done.

yeah indeed helpful but.... i think its in me the problem about TF *sigh* sooo everything is okay in here as long as you have in your mind some of them yay for mind and nay when you dont have ideas -.-"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to DragonReiko [2016-05-23 08:33:00 +0000 UTC]

I didn't have any ideas when I started to draw this one. I just went with the flow. The key to designing these things is not to think too much. It's not like the bots gets to decide much how they look? Well, I guess they do but that's not the point. Not all bots can be the "most special, supercute, super awesome looking hotties", right? Go with the lines, go with shapes, and let it be even if it's not exactly something "oh shiat, cool!".
