Description I have had probably 3 or 4 people ask me how to do this, so I thought I'd put together a tutorial. This is a very basic, simple skill and it can be very helpful for lots of things.
i always think this is like common knowledge but then i remember not everyone has been digitally drawing for 8 years like me

This tutorial just goes through how to put a white outline around your artworks in paint tool SAI.

NOTE:
Not all versions of SAI can save files with transparent backgrounds. If you're not sure if you can or not, try saving something as a PNG and if the "PNG Saving Options" box comes up, then you're golden. If it doesn't come up, I suggest you check out the Photoshop version of this tutorial, since a white outline won't be very helpful on a white background. If your sai cant save transparent pngs, make sure to save the sai file as a psd so you can open it in photoshop, then just follow the photoshop tutorial from there!

I'm sorry if any of this is confusing or unclear! Feel free to ask me to clarify anything if you're confused.

Also, if you have any other sai related questions, feel free to ask me! I'm pretty familiar with SAI. Not QUITE as good as with photoshop, but SAI is capable of a lot less, so I feel that my understanding is still around the same level.

Hope this helps to anyone who was wondering!

i havent used sai 2 before but I'd image there'd be something similar? maybe called "expand" or "increase"?

i use sai2! there's a selection bar which has 'dilate selection ...' which you can use to expand your selection by any number of pixels! (there's a slider to help you out)

try Selection->Invert
then doing the increments! You'll probably have to invert it again at the end but that should work ! Hope that solves your problem!

Thanks so much for the help!^^Β  Way easier than trying to manually draw the outline.xDDD

Tip: My Sai doesn't save .pngs, but all I do is save the file as .psd and then reopen it in Gimp.Β  Then I can save it as a transparent .png just fine!

Thank you, it's always nice to see some good Β tutorials, but I wanted to say the colour of the background and the yellow writing is a little hard to differentiate, that's my only critique. Β
