Sketching it is a challenge, inking it is arduous (since it's one screwup and you're done), but coloring it is what really gives the picture depth and character. You have to think in terms of three-dimensional characters to really give them that feel. You can use a character mannequin and a desk lamp as a reference for coloring, something I used in order to get inspired for the coloring process.

those two look sooo much alike... come to think of it Johnny and Bo-bobo do hang out with girls smarter than them, except Beauty yells everytime Bo-bobo does something surreal.
Plus it looks like Johnny allows women to beat him up, Bo-bobo had fought female villians and won!
