Eheheheh. It actually took me a minute to realize the hearts on the left were representing genital urges. I was just thinking about a passage from the Bible that refers to "bowels of compassion". People nowadays see compassion as coming from the heart, like the guy on the right, but it used to be bowels, apparently. Mankind just picked a random organ, it seems, then changed it. Okay, so the hearts on the left ARE NOT part of the digestive system.

... I guess I really do "think different".

I'm giving the subject of religion quite a bit of thought. I would say that formerly I was an atheist, but now I am a Protestant Christian.

Classy and funny. I saw a smaller resolution one at Facebook, Most don't bother to find or give credit, and I'm glad I did some Googling so that when I decide to post it there at some point in the future, I can give you direct credit and a link. I tend to create my own stuff, but this is a gem.

That wallpaper descibes my view on love (ask my girlfriend )
Normally I have a wallpaper with something nice 3D-ish, and I change it about every 2 days (I'm that easily bored of my wallpaper)
But guess what... This wallpaper, in it's simplicity made it to my desktop for over a month now.
The message is just so great. I lond for a time where the majority will be like the guy on the right.

Once more it's great. I love it.

ssokolow In reply to amisi [2008-07-03 21:10:01 +0000 UTC]

In my case, it's sort of the inverse of what my younger brother complains about. All the compatible girls his age are too busy studying for him to meet them.

For me, it's just not worth the hassle to go out looking for interesting people when I can get more pleasure out of learning a new programming language, practicing writing fiction, or (soon) learning to draw. (It's also easier to find interesting people online where geography doesn't conspire against me. I live in the middle of nowhere)

amisi In reply to ssokolow [2008-07-04 05:01:23 +0000 UTC]

lol i'd hate that. i cant stand to be too far away from anything. but i understand your predicament. I'm in a similar one myself. All the boys my age (even at 17) are immature and not worth the trouble of trying to get to grow up enough to handle a real relationship.

The only qualms i have about talking to others online is that you never quite no if someone is joking around or not. many times things are lost or miscommunicated.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ssokolow In reply to amisi [2008-07-04 06:09:15 +0000 UTC]

In my case, I find talking to others in person to be tiring. I have high-functioning Asperger's Syndrome. (Basically, I'm more or less normal, but I lack the instinctual ability to pick up on social cues, so I have to do it consciously... which does get tiring when I'm not among familiar people)

As for relationships, here's a role reversal that you might find funny. Because there are so few geek-girls out there relative to the number of guys and because I live in the worst place for finding them, it's likely that I'd want to just be friends with any I did meet. Hard enough finding interesting girls without risking a failed relationship.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

amisi In reply to ssokolow [2008-07-04 16:32:36 +0000 UTC]

if you dont mind me asking, what is Asperger's Syndrome? I've heard of it before but I know almost nothing about it.

as for the reversal i do find that funny. you hardly ever find a guy with a motive like that. but what can you do? girls are often times no better, at least where i live.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ssokolow In reply to amisi [2008-07-07 10:18:02 +0000 UTC]

What Asperger's Syndrome means varies quite a bit from person to person, so I suggest checking Wikipedia for a list of how it can manifest. (The Wikipedia article is pretty good), but here are the main things it means for me:

I used to never make eye-contact (I don't get anything out of it, so for me, doing so is a learned mannerism) and I'd talk on and on and on without noticing how bored the listener was. I solved that second problem in three ways: learning to consciously notice when people were getting bored (doesn't always work), asking people to tell me when they're getting bored "because I never shut up", and becoming a more engaging speaker. (only works when the person's interests are at least somewhat similar to mine)

I have always had a very advanced vocabulary for my age (To give you a bit of an idea what I mean, I'm writing this by typing out what I'd say if I were speaking to you face-to-face)

Unlike most humans, I can't instinctually pick up on social cues, so I've had to learn to consciously monitor peoples' tone of voice, body posture, etc.. That's why I find socialization tiring, potentially stressful (eg. if I stumble into a context I have no experience with), and something to be done only as a means to an end. Thankfully, it's not a big problem with familiar people, but I'm also not a social person by nature, so I do like to try for at least 8 hours of "alone with a fascinating problem" time per day.

Narrow interests. Until recently, if it didn't have to do with computers, I didn't care. (unless it was a National Geographic video or an article in a science magazine) However, if it did have to do with computers, I knew about it in detail... didn't matter what it was. (Along with the inability to read social cues, that's one of the most visible symptoms of Asperger Syndrome) Nowadays, I've expanded to also being quite knowledgeable about and interested in writing fiction. I still need more practice actually writing stuff, but I make an excellent editor.

Also, while I'm not sure whether there's a causal relationship (many AS people do these and I do them, but I'm not sure it's because I have AS), I have terrible handwriting, I'm a very literal thinker, I sometimes speak too loudly without noticing until the listener points it out to me, and I seem to have trouble identifying my own emotions. (The last one showed up after Grade 12 stress nearly drove me to nervous breakdown, so I'm not sure)

In general, it makes me look like a smart and friendly but slightly eccentric guy who prefers to socialize online rather than in person. I suspect that, in the long run, I'll either end up being "that fun bachelor uncle" or a "cohabitant with benefits" to a girl with similar views on the importance of alone time.

amisi In reply to ssokolow [2008-07-07 17:32:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmm thats very interesting. I love to learn about new things. And i didnt know anything about AS as i mentioned earlier. I hope it didnt botehr you, me asking so many questions. I dont mean to offend. I'm just a curious person. Though i never seem to ask the right questions. For example i might ask your favorite color, or height, or eye color, but neglect asking things like your criminal record, where you work, and the like.

I happen to be a very visual person so i prefer to speak with hand signals and movements or through art. Though i'm not comfortable speaking in front of people or being with people i do not know.

I know very little about computers except enough to get me by. If anything should happen i have a friend in the computer business to help me. Which does come in handy.

Just so you know, i ramble so tell me if I do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ssokolow In reply to amisi [2008-07-08 06:40:03 +0000 UTC]

Heh. It's unlikely I'll notice if you ramble and, in my opinion, as long as you care about the answers, there's no such thing as too many questions. (No little kids asking "Why?" repeatedly, please)

Aside from my being an auditory person and a computer geek, that sounds quite a bit like me. (I tend to ramble, I'm quite a curious person (in both senses of the word, some might say), I love to learn new things (as long as I'm not being pressured to), and I don't always ask the right questions)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

amisi In reply to ssokolow [2008-07-08 13:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Well i'm glad then. I tend to annoy people either with my questions or my behaviors. Especially around people i'm comfortable with. I just dont care so i do whatever i want. But not in a rude or uncaring way, i usually end up doing something without thinking because i'm thinking about something else and it annoys people.

I'm like that too, i dont want to learn something if i have too. I was like that with reading for a long time. I was always forced to read so i hated it. When i got older however i found some really great books that made me want to read. I read a lot now but its more to entertain and pass time then actually learn.

You will also come to know i am terrible at spelling, not because I can't spell but because i type fast and sometimes mix up keys.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ssokolow In reply to amisi [2008-07-08 13:37:46 +0000 UTC]

I don't really annoy people because I'm comfortable with them because I tend to select friends for their ability to tolerate me. My family is used to me but I also have made an effort to adjust my habits.

I was never forced to read, so I've always loved it. (My mother was forced to read, so she knew all too well why it was a bad idea. One of my brothers didn't start reading until he was 9 or 10 and now he's enjoying deep books like The Stuff of Thought by Steven Pinker)

As for spelling, I'm a perfectionist and a walking dictionary, and my browser has a built-in check-as-you-type spell checker, so it's unlikely that I'll spell something incorrectly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

amisi In reply to ssokolow [2008-07-08 18:09:28 +0000 UTC]

That's cool. My mother used to read more horror books than anything and she was big into sci-fi so I've stayed in that genre and the like. But branching out into a new genre is always fun. But that's just me. I always need a book that will hold my attention. I cant read a book that doesn't interest me which is why it was hard for me in school.

I have a spell checker too, but that doesnt mean that i wont forget a letter or add to many. I do that a lot with words that have two letters. But oh well, i just go back and fix them. Though that can get annoying...
