May 21, 2009 - Nintendo set up a conference call with not one, not two, but six of the people behind The Legendary Starfy for the Nintendo DS. They told us about how Starfy came to be, why the game hasn't come out in America until now, and whether or not we'll see more Starfy in the future.
For the unitiated, The Legendary Starfy is a 2D, ocean set platformer staring a little star shaped guy that might be an alien, or might be a starfish, depending on that Nintendo has decided at that point. Starfy encounters numerous puzzles on his adventure, and, being in the ocea, has a range of movement not offered by most other games in the genre.
There have been numerous Starfy games for the Game Boy Advance, but this is the first time American audiences will get the chance to play a localized Starfy game.
When asked why it took so long for Starfy to come to the US, Producer Hitoshi Yamagami responded quite simply.
"He was swimming all the way from Japan!" joked Yamagami. He went on to explain that the Starfy series was always developed for a Japanese audience. According to the developers, they always wanted to bring Starfy to the US, but Nintendo of America deemed the game "too Japanese" for American audiences.
But with the fifth installment of Starfy, Tose wanted to make a game that new players could get into.
"It's a game that's really the result of all the great ideas we had in 1-4. This is a really accessible game and a great starting point to bring it to the US," said Yurie Hattori, assistant director for the Starfy games on the DS.
Tose Software thinks this Starfy game is the perfect version for the US to start with, since it's one of their most accessible titles. Director Kazuki Yoshihara said the game has matured over the years.
"Not only have the game mechanics become more reined, but as we've watched Starfy grow up, he's matured as well. In Starfy 1 he was kind of a crybaby. Now he's all grown up and helping out other character, so we're proud of him, too," Yoshihara said.
Gamers will get the opportunity to play the matured, more accessible Starfy when he floats to shores on June 7.
As a final note, the developers said they would be more than happy to bring the previous Starfy games to the US, as well as expand his adventures to the console, but that depends on fan response. So if you're a fan of the star shaped hero, sound off and buy

Why does Stafy look unhappy?
He should be happy, especially since he's finally coming to America!
