Pinedrop — Sampling Winter Delicacies

Description This bull moose was heading away from the Gros Ventre River near sunset with another bull moose that had already lost its rack.  They are usually solitary but I'm told that's not true in winter.  (My first photo processed in Lightroom... thanks to NWunseen for the recommendation!)

How very sweet of you!  I really appreciate that you took the time to do a feature on these pieces that were suggested.  It means a lot to know that someone recommended my photo.

Sometime I'll have to show you the ones that didn't turn out.  This bull moose and his companion did a little play-fighting--both up on their hind legs--it almost looked like they were dancing.

Thank you!  I'm glad you like it.  There wasn't really any danger because I was inside my car leaning out the window with my camera resting on the side-view mirror.  Also, I used a telephoto lens so he was farther away than it looks in the photo.  He and his pal didn't seem too bothered... they were very focused on end-of-the-day munching.

I understand! I would be scared anyway, we don't have such big animals like this one in Italy!!
I saw you used a great tele lens, 420mm!! What lens is it? It's really sharp.

Pinedrop In reply to Francy-93 [2014-02-08 21:08:42 +0000 UTC]

Moose are gigantic creatures, but they don't usually bother people unless they feel threatened.  I'm always thrilled when I see one.

The lens is a 300mm Nikon coupled with a teleconverter.  I really like the lens even though it's a bit slow to focus.

I really wish I could see one one day
Thank you anyway I have the Tamron 70-300mm but no teleconverter, maybe if someday I find a cheaper one

teehee..didnt know moose were into the nose candy! seriously though, this is a wonderful shot, Tris! some really nice light you got and love how all the attention goes to the moose' eye and face..beautiful creature! amazing job for your first image with LR..excellent work

welcome for the recommendation..let me know if you have any questions

Pinedrop In reply to NWunseen [2014-01-30 13:47:39 +0000 UTC]

This photo was mostly for practice since the focus isn't spot on.  But I've read most of Kelby's guidebook on Lightroom and am just so excited by what it possible--it's like a whole new world.

Now if only you and LeeAnne would come up with a tutorial...

NWunseen In reply to Pinedrop [2014-02-03 18:14:26 +0000 UTC]

really is a whole new world..cool thing is you can use both LR and PS now LR can be daunting at first..especially learning the library portion, but once you get it down, it really is an unbeatable tool.

if i knew what i did most of the time while processing i would definitely do a tutorial..hopefully can soon teach processing techniques over the web

P.S.  And here we thought moose were fine, upstanding citizens.

Great processing, Tris! Addam is a pretty smart guy when it comes to suggesting ways to process better. You've got a good teacher.

Despite the great processing, you had a great shot to begin with...love that golden light!

Pinedrop In reply to LAlight [2014-01-27 22:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, LeeAnne.  I have much to learn about processing with Lightroom but I'm really excited.  It is a HUGE step up from Elements.  And as to this shot, the focus isn't perfect but I had to post it because the moose was such a healthy, handsome specimen.

You should go check it out in the late afternoon one of these days.  I think I got up there around 4 pm.  There were quite a few elk right after I turned onto the road to Kelly, and then just a short ways further (where the road curves) these two bull moose.  I think it's because there's still good forage there thanks to the lack of snow.
