EDIT: Years-later edit but this chart is not 100% accurate. It's fine for just a sort of vague outline but there are mistakes and outdated information (for example, bay/Agouti is not a modifer/dilution, it is also a base color like red and black. Or that seal brown is genetically different from bay - it's not, it is just the darkest phenotype of bay). So don't use it as exact science!

Here is a chart on horse colors, markings, and simple genetics. All is explained on the chart, and I hope it's clear enough. It's obvious I started running out of room near the bottom with the text, so it's a little crammed together, sorry v-v
