because the cars didn't have the same heft/place  to conceal it?

In American cars there was always a bin behind the rear seat for the top to fit into. Probably with European cars the production was so small that it wasn't worth the money to design one in.

as I think, these special versions were built e.g. by Karmann, a specialist. Perhaps they wanted those huge folded things to look like they just do? Like pre-war tops, in fact...
