Description Shorah, Fellow Explorer!

Here's a little side-project that I've been finishing this last week.(After more than 3 months of drawing and painting!)

It's my Relto Book from the PC game URU.Β It is completely hand-made by myself, measures 4 3/4" X 8 1/4" by 5/8" thick and has 5O hand-aged pages with embellishment.
I researched the Relto page drawings, sketched and painted them before binding the book.(Easier that way!!) I also added in a temporary generic Relto photo for a more complete look for the deviation.

I felt that it was ready enough for pictures and I wanted to share it with my fellow "Myst-ies"!!

Thanks for looking!

That is incredible. Is it difficult to make books like this? I have always wanted to try.

As log a s you have bit of crafting skills, the Relto Book is definitely a worth-while project.
The toughest part is drawing and inking the pages. I'll see if the tutorial is still accessible.

Cut a hole in the all the paper behind the 2nd page, then a smaller one in the 2nd page. Place an iPhone or iPod Touch in that space in the pages with a video of the Relto flyby, or an iPod version of Myst if there is one

That is excellent! I've thought about trying to make a Relto book for a while, but I am completely amazed at how good that looks!

Thanks!!

It helped out to have some decent screen shotsand reference from the Guild of Greeters.
I have no idea if the scale is correct or not. But I'm happy with the size and how it looks on the book shelf.

That is one of the most endearing and heartfelt compliments that I have ever received on my Myst works!

It's the love of the Myst universe that inspires me to be faithful to the imagery. I don't think that I'll ever be able to stop creating Myst art and props. But honestly, why would I ever want to stop? This may sound a bit obsessive, but the worlds of Myst have very much become a part of MY world and are an important part of me now.

Hey!

I'm thinking of doing something like this, how'd you put the Yeesha symbol on there?
...I was thinking about doing an indented leather kind of thing for a journal like the one in URU CC, but I'm not sure about how to go about this, assistance/ideas/suggestions?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pirkleations In reply to MeaNara [2010-05-12 04:21:57 +0000 UTC]

Hi!!

I inked the symbol onto the pleather freehand after using a circle guide for the basic shape.

The best way that I can think of to do a stamped leather symbol without actually doing stamped leather might be to use the method that I did for the Myst book cover.

I sculpted the cover in clay, made a plaster mold and cast the cover in latex rubber. The nice thing about this method is that it is actually less problematic if you make a mistake on the symbol. Just do a little re-sculpting if you miss a detail.

Let me know if you need any further details on the above technique.

Sorry this took so long to reply to- I wanted to keep it in my messages folder so I could use it as reference.
That's so impressive!! But how'd you sculpt the inside cover flaps; the ones that hold the book inside the cover?
I'm thinking of making a stamp... Thing. I still have to make the mold for it and it's going to take a while- it's really tiny detail!!
I'm nervous I'm going to mess it up, since the material I'm carving it into is impossible to touch up if I mess up...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pirkleations In reply to MeaNara [2010-05-29 03:16:49 +0000 UTC]

I sculpted the inside flap by adding an extra 3" to the end edges of the plaster mold for "folding" and gluing a "pocket" that the actual book covers to slip into.

Micro-sculpting *anything* is always a challenge. But I think that you are up to it! I'm sure that you will do just fine if you take your time and plan out your steps in the sculpting process.

Here...have some positive vibrations!!

ZZZZNNNNT!! ZNNNNNT!!! ZAP!!

"Now, adjust the frequency slider. No. That's the amplitude slider. Try it again."

Thank you for the compliment!
I'm obsessive when it comes to the Myst series. I love having 3-D bits of the Ages in my home to touch and hold. It makes me feel even more a part of the worlds that Rand and Robyn Miller created. So much so that I've been starting to turn my property into an explorable "Age"!

That's so cool! I never even thought of real-world versions of Myst objects until I saw this book. But now it seems so obvious. I mean, what Myst player wouldn't want their own linking book? ^_^

It definitely takes Myst fandom to a new dimension!
When I finish my backyard Garden Age, I can have regular "gatherings" of other Myst and URU fans!
If you get the chance, feel free to check out my other Myst-related and Garden Age creations.

My Relto is a mess right now. Sticks and rocks. Uncut foliage. Bug infestations. Marbles on the floor to accidently slip on. Roof still needs patching up. Bathroom toilet backed up into Releeshan.
I'll need to tidy it up first before I invite any guests. LOL
