Description Oh boi here we go

As some of you might already know,Β Link's Awakening is getting a remake on the Switch Β and I am LIVING for it, like good god I can't wait. Not only is LA one of my favourite Zelda games that I've made tons of fanart of (I mean, I literally painted a Wind Fish on my Switch because I don't do subtle ), but it's one that is often overlooked and definitely deserves the love. So now we can have our hearts broken in 3D, hurray

I was so undecided as to what to draw for this, I had so many scenes in mind but I also wanted to keep it simple-ish to fit the art style of the game (WHICH IS ADORABLE CLAYMATION AND I LOVE IT), so I ended up with a pan shot of the entire island, which I gotta say turned out pretty nice. Overall I'm pretty happy with this, I wish the colours were more vibrant (the eternal watercolour struggle), but since the game itself is slightly washed out, I guess it fits. Now I'll just have to patiently wait for a release date

Your style is so cute, but I also really like the colors you used and the texture you created with the colored pencils, it looks really neat, especially the ocean!

This is so beautiful and charming, totally captures all that I loved about the game :3

That said, I might be in the minority that is not happy about the remake... I could barely stand the ending in 8-bit, I'm pretty sure I wont even get myself to get to it in better graphics...

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to LukeTheRipper [2019-02-17 14:19:40 +0000 UTC]

thanks<3
how do you mean, you couldn't stand the ending? you mean story-wise, or was the late game too frustrating/tedious etc.?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LukeTheRipper In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-17 15:55:27 +0000 UTC]

My pleasure, it's a really breathtaking piece ^^

And I mean the ending itself, the fact that everything I did was for nothing, all the people I helped didn't exist and faded away because of me, it's a really terrible feeling when you get really immersed into a game, and a real dick move by the developers. Beautiful game, but it has the single worst ending I have ever experienced in a game...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to LukeTheRipper [2019-02-25 22:55:52 +0000 UTC]

mmmh, i can definitely understand how it could be frustrating, but i saw someone once describe this game's lesson as "even the most pleasant of dreams must come to an end", and really i think that that's what it's about. koholint was a beautiful place, but just like anything, it wasn't bound to last forever. regardless tho, you didn't really do it for nothing, you still lived through the game's story and characters, and even if they're not real, you still saved them. or, at the very least, you saved the wind fish, and the memories of the place will live on in link, the wind fish and, i guess, the player. it's definitely a bittersweet ending

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LukeTheRipper In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-26 00:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, everything does come to an end, BUT the way way it ends makes a big difference.

And no matter how you look at it, it was literally for nothing, every single person you helped or saved vanished out of existence, the Wind Fish (which I had no really attachment to and would sacrifice it gladly just to get Koholint back) will just fall asleep again and dream another world to repeat the process, as for Link, in the ending he's still adrift, so there's no telling if he even survives (and given how many different Links there are, as far as we know this one could die at sea). And when you put it next to the extremely upbeat ending of A Link to the Past, which showcases all the people you helped continue with their happy lives... it really makes me wanna give Hyrule the same treatment and burn it to the ground so that it too, remains only as a memory...

Sorry, I do understand and appreciate you defending it, but to me, it wasn't bittersweet, it was just pure bitter, and to this day I haven't felt as terrible finishing a game as with this one, especially because of how beautiful the game is right up until the horrible ending...

Ruyc In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-16 18:37:03 +0000 UTC]

your welcome
Videogame remakes most of the time tend to be very good because not only they change the graphics, but improve many gameplay mechanics as well (just play the original Metroid game for nes and another for Zero Mission for gba to understand what I mean).
While the game (both the gb original and the gbc deluxe one) in my opinion is on par with A link to the Past, the idea of just making the same game just making it look better kind of feel pointless to me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to Ruyc [2019-02-17 14:18:07 +0000 UTC]

oh i'm fairly sure they will improve upon some of the more annoying mechanics in the original. for one, the screen transitions are gone in the remake, so the camera continuously follows link which doesn't give you those jarring breaks between areas. i'm also fairly sure we'll be able to equip more than two items at the same time, considering the switch has more than just the A and B buttons lol
i'm excited to see how it will turn out!

Yoo, that Wind Fish painting on your Switch dock looks nice : ) I've "decorated" my own dock with prize tags

But hey, this looks really good! The detailing on the trees are on point, and little chibi Link and Marin are just adorable. I can see you went with the remake designs considering the chibi-designs and the grey color on the owl.
Also, this might be me just being weird, but does the Link in this game really have the Hylian shield? (EDIT: NVM I CHECKED THE TRAILER AGAIN AND HE DOES I'M JUST DUMB)

And just to add my own thoughts regarding this remake: there was a leak going on, telling that we would get a new 2D Zelda...but I didn't suspect it to be a Link's Awakening remake! I have some slightly conflicted feelings because it's not long since I played this game on my own (iirc last November). Also, I am not yet completely sold by the graphic style, which I'd describe as the "plastic toy" look (but I find Link's design is outright adorable!).
But, I did play both Link to the Past AND Link Between the Worlds and enjoyed them both, so maybe I can get into this, too! I mean, it's a Zelda game, chances are that I like (specially because I liked the original Link's Awakening).

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to Yamashita-akaDoragon [2019-02-16 18:11:37 +0000 UTC]

thanks! it took me way too long to paint that wind fish, but i'm very happy with it (i first painted a silent princess on it cuz i'm still botw trash but i didn't like the way it looked, so then i went with mah boi instead lol) how do you decorate using prize tags. prize tags of what? how many? i am intrigued

yep, i also went with the remake design on the palm trees, tho i made them thinner, and i think all the designs look adorable (and yes, link has a hylian-ish shield in the trailer haha)

i was hoping for a skyward sword remake myself so that i can finally play it, so this caught me off-guard but in a very pleasant way. i've been meaning to replay the original (which i've only completed twice in the 4 years i've owned it), but now i'll just wait 'till this comes out~ the design surprised me at first, but now i just really love it, and it makes sense for it to look so whimsical, since the entire island is, you know, (YOU KNOW, i try to avoid spoilers). a link to the past and worlds were two great games, i thought a classic zelda remake would go in a worlds-ish direction of art style, but i think this style fits the game, although it will be weird to see this cartoony style in the more dark/depressing sections of the game (which i am more excited about than i should be)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Yamashita-akaDoragon In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-16 21:18:40 +0000 UTC]

The prize tags are mostly from games and paper I've bought, they're like stickers but they don't stick well bc they're already used once so I've taped them on my dock
it's sort of a joke of mine that my Switch has all these different prizes :'P

I am also waiting for Skyward Sword remake, I've been in a Zelda mood lately (played Link's Awakening and replayed Twilight Princess at the end of 2018, and I'm currently watching a Skyward Sword and Phantom Hourglass let's plays on Youtube) so it'd be great to play it again. SS is such a great Zelda if you ask from me.
I've also heard some people were expecting to get Zelda II remake and they were surprised by Link's Awakening. Personally I don't mind the current scenario, but getting remakes of first two Zeldas would give me an actual excuse to play them :'D

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to Yamashita-akaDoragon [2019-02-17 14:25:55 +0000 UTC]

that sounds sexy af :'D

i am always in a zelda mood :'D i'm currently replaying oracle of ages (which i highly recommend btw) and yes, skyward sword is a great game that unjustly got hate and i dream of the day it gets a remake

a zelda II remake? that wouldn't be very advisable, i never even finished it on gba because it's just stupidly hard. and i don't mean difficult puzzles, i mean enemies that one-shot you and force you to restart from the beginning of the map when you are trying to reach the final dungeon by going through an area literally called the valley of death. i made it to the boss of that dungeon twice (without dying once from the starting area to the dungeon, then through the dungeon itself, which is also brutally difficult and full of bullshit puzzles like falling down an endless pit to get to the right area or go through invisible holes in walls), and yeah, never again. i'd be curious about zelda I tho, i've never played it eitherΒ

Yamashita-akaDoragon In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-17 17:54:46 +0000 UTC]

you know it

No no, that's why Zelda II remake would be good - the remake could fix the difficulty and all other issues the game might have, like the translation.
But then again, Majora's Mask remake "fixed" the Zora swimming so idk if they can make a good balanced remake of old, hard game

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to Yamashita-akaDoragon [2019-02-25 22:57:38 +0000 UTC]

a potential remake fixing the difficulty would actually make me 100% interested in that game, i didn't even thing of that

uuuuugh whoever coded that godawful zora swimming deserves to burn in hell, it's easier to pilot a goddamn cruise ship

MajorasMasks In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-16 19:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, they pretty much based the new style on the old pixel art, while keeping the duality with the "movie" parts like in the original (even if the style used for Link in the opening was updated).

It's almost like a game to guess what the next Zelda remake will be. I had my bets on Skyward Sword as well, but perhaps well get a remake of it in another few years. I can see a 10th-anniversary remake happening, but that means waiting until 2021. Regardless, I'm always excited when a Zelda game is announced, whether it be a new title or a remake. Link's Awakening was quite a surprise, and I'm glad to see some love for the 2D games.

You're welcome!

Lengurkur In reply to PitchBlackEspresso [2019-02-28 20:20:14 +0000 UTC]

I hope it does come out earlier as well, but I wouldn't bet on it since it seems like there's a minimum of about a decade between a Zelda game's initial release and a remake, but hey, Nintendo may surprise us!
