Description
ISLAM IN NOT A RACE!It's difficult to coexist with Islam with it's modern Inquisition just as it was for anyone not Catholic, heathens and Protestants alike, to coexist with Christianity in the 4th century through the 17th century (unless you're a small child, in which it's still difficult to coexist with Catholicism).
Reza Aslan is a misinformer, purposeful misconstruer of facts, and liar on the subject of Islam and Sam Harris .

Gosh! I thought it was just me who hated that clown! The crap that comes out of his mouth half the the time makes you want to have an aneurysm due to pure stupidity. He's a liar and all he's there for is to rationalize away any connection with Islam and jihad terror...oh wait, ALL muslims seem to have that job...

I don't really know that much about him personally. I've read excerpts from his wiki page and I've heard his name here and there but I haven't heard much from him. Of course, I tend not to pay heed to people who argue for an historical Jesus.

Actually, he's an Islamist stooge trying to divorce Islam with the Fundamentalist teachings enforced by Islamists. In other words, he's here to insult our intelligence by feeding us with everything the left wants us to hear/believe.

Actually he's a Christian. His parents immigrated to the US from Iran, and they were secular for the most part. He got involved with a local church in his town and then went on to study Christian theology. During his studies, he's apparently become convinced that the bible is in fact full of superstition, but like most apologists, he seems intent on seeing some basic philosophical good and truth in the bible. He also did the same thing with Islam, after becoming interested in his roots, which is to say, he's playing an apologist for them too.
I actually don't mind the fact that people try to divorce modern religion from the ancient horrors that are in the writings. I mean, sure I think it's all a load of crap, but I wouldn't care what people believe as long as they kept it to themselves and didn't try to hurt others or take away their rights.
In this particular case, I'm upset that he chose to use political correctness to warp the issue of calling out the vile aspects of the religion itself.

Muslim or Christian, he really is a big mouth. He says all the PC things that you can expect to hear from a sympathizer.

I wouldn't exactly call that a leftist position so much as an accomodationist perspective. As an Antitheist, I don't really care what the religious belief is. If you're using dogma and myth to interpret reality, rather than rational inquiry, then you're wrong to do so.
As far as this guy using the 'no true Scotsman fallacy' is concerned, it doesn't matter how this or that subgroup is characterized by the outside world. If they believe that their actions are pure from a religious standpoint, then it is religious regardless of the degree of consensus about legitimate interpretations of dogma.
To put it another way, I doubt very much that some liberal UCC congregation in Cali would condone the doctrine and practices of a charismatic snake-handling group in rural Tennessee, but to the snake-handlers what they do is a pure interpretation of doctrine.
Now, the reason people like this Aslan guy are given any credibility, at least in my opinion, is that they've positioned themselves to be able to benefit from conflicts of ideology such that they can manipulate enough unaware individuals with garbage that seems credible. And that sort of manipulation is something for which neither the left nor the right, neither liberal or conservative has any sort of monopoly. So please be careful the next time you try and characterize something as distinct to any one category of people.

He's an apologist. Unbiased, objective assessment of the subject was never to be expected. Curiously enough, his chief opponent, Sam Harris- whose point I still favour- isn't that much better; he generalizes a good bit.

Unlike Harris, Aslan actually uses common sense.

He's not the only one. Ben Affleck was all over the news for having the exact same heated argument with Bill Maher and Sam Harris on Bill's show. The problem is that they are conflating Islam (the religion) with Muslims (the people). Sam Harris is not against the people, he's against the religion. He's not saying the people in general are evil, but that the religion itself is full of evil hateful BS. And in all fairness, he says the same thing about Christianity or any other organized religion that promotes hate and/or violence. Political correctness has become a very convenient rock from where apologists and theists can hide behind in order to obscure the real issues. And this saddens me because I actually think Reza and Ben are otherwise very intelligent and articulate people.
