Thanks to Cosmos, I learned that Sir Issac Newton was born on Christmas Day. I say we should celebrate his birth by bonking our loved ones on the head with an apple, look through telescopes and burn models or pictures of Robert Hooke in effigy.Β

I agree wholeheartedly! I feel like December 25th finally has meaning. The birthday of an REAL person, who ushered in the age of scientific reason. Isaac Newton!
But instead of getting hit with apples, I'd like to suggest candied apples and fig Newtons as the sacrament for the 25th of December.
Then we can all gather around the TV and watch a marathon session of Cosmos with our loved ones! (I'm sure the series will be out on DVD by then, in time for x-mas.)

We should call it Cosmos Day, instead of Christmas.
Merry Cosmos!

I think we can get this going without them.
Perhaps a Facebook page dedicated to December 25th, the birthday of Sir Isaac Newton, and the birth of astrophysics.
Or at the very least, you could make a meme in your own artistic style for us to spread around! I'm sure you'd make an awesome piece of art for it!

I think the joke would have been clearer if instead of the dirty/dark blue you made it a light blue.

You're probably right. I guess Mel Gibson's black shrouded version seaped into my thinking.

Wow, I'm such an American. I forget just how arrogant we are, even the ones trying desperately not to be, and that just because it's a holiday here doesn't mean it is everywhere. Yeesh! It's the "Virgin Mary" realizing she has a choice to make. No, not the morning after pill or an abortion, but what exactly she tells her family that will keep her from being stoned by the community. Thus, Christmas, Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Old St. Nick, er whatever he may be called elsewhere, was born. Sorry for the confusion to all of my international friends!!!! Please forgive my ignorance.Β Β

I get it now, sorry man, I just didn't make the connection is all. I tend to think if I don't get something it has something to do with popular culture or current happenings which I never follow or know anything about, tis my own fault.
Now, lets not go blaming Mary for christmas, that festival existed long before her little miracle came along, catholocism just sat on it and made a fuss if anyone complained.
I still like christmas though, it's the hymns I think, I love listening to them.

Oh believe me, I don't believe for a second there even existed a Jesus, at least as we know him, much less a virgin Mother Mary. No doubt someone named Jesus existed in the first century, but the one made into a legend, I tend not to think so. Bart Ehrman and Dale B. Martin are the only two who have provided some evidence to the contrary that I'm willing to accept, but I remain skeptical. It's no accident that Dec 25 falls on the winter solstice or that Easter falls on the Summer Solstice. It's just more of Christianity co-opting fun pagan stuff and making it about their shit.Β

Can't say I'm a fan of hymns, however, interestingly enough, many of the old church hymns still sung today come from bar songs where Martin Luther, father of protestantism, enjoyed hanging out. At least that's what I was told. So who knows.

Well I know that the best way to convert people to a certain way of thinking is simply to adopt their ways into your own, i.e. co-opting christmas and easter and everything. Which is why I always thought it would be best to simply do the same with atheism, keep the festivals, simply for the celebration or for example, christmas could simply be about family and coming together and all that instead of worshipping a man wishes you wouldnt and just be nice. Humans have a habit of not wanting to change and violently opposing it, which is why the clever men that spread christianity in Ireland adopted their pagan practices as christian and turned their symbol of female power and fertility into the symbol of satan.
As far as I know or have read, Jesus was the greek translation of his name, the original I cant spell but we would pronounce it Joshua. Iv always been happy to think that there was a man that was simply enlightened and tried to teach people they could be free by their own power similar to siddhartha. The problem with guys like that is that people have another habit of deifying them because... fuck knows why, people are stupid.

I just love hymns man, I dont know why, same reason anyone likes any song I think, they just make me feel something

Apologies for the ramble

No worries at all. Ramble away ant time! And I think that's a great insight. Strip the tradition of superstition and obligation and you can actually enjoy the holidays!
