Basically the US government is overthrown by religious zealots (similar to the Iranian Revolution of 1979) and woman have all of their rights stripped and then some (not even allowed to read or write). And women are also classed.
Wives have the highest position
Marthas are house servants
Aunts (the only women allowed to read and write)
And the handmaids are breeding slaves. Our titular handmaiden has committed "adultery", in that she got married to a divorcee. Her punishment, since she is fertile, is to becoming a handmaid to a Commander and his barren Wife.
