well i have to finish that lol, it's kind of hard since most of my work is done here where i can just draw it on my computer saves time. But i got my hours cut so the extra time i could use is kinda gone...and well, at home, i'm not so sure my wife would approve of this kind of cartooning so i don't want to upset her. I'm trying to find ways to finish it though.

i'll send you a roughdraft when i'm done inking.

PIXEL-Of-DOOM In reply to pilot02003 [2004-11-15 16:07:48 +0000 UTC]

no no, i actually had to learn the actual steps of comic coloring on my own from others who did it. You learn how to use the programs with which to do this type of stuff in a design school, but they don't actually say , here's how to make a comic book or anything. You learn 3 basic programs if you go into the design field Adobe illustrator, Adobe photoshop, and QuarkXpress which is a publishing program that nearly all newspapers, printing press' and colateral publishing companies use to layout text and images and magazines , anything with words on it that you've ever seen from soup cans to candy bars, to movie posters and dvds have been set up and printed from one of those programs or something similar. It's a lot of fun if you get the right job.

It would be nice to learn illustrator, i just got it, and im lost, but i know that i cant color over lineart like i can in OC, because it seems to be a vector program.

PIXEL-Of-DOOM In reply to pilot02003 [2004-11-15 18:46:42 +0000 UTC]

yes that's exactly right, it IS a vector only program. it's used more for doing text treatments or logo reconstruction or logo design. You can do a few amazing things but you have to be pro level...check out [link]
this chick went to school where i did, and she's now some big wig illustrator for Toys r' us. She totally kicks ass with the program. check it out, it's amazing stuff, far far above my level.

well i'm sure you've heard this before but "CAN'T Never could do anything." you just gotta give it a fair shake. I myself come from a fine arts background hence the amazing detail i can put into my work. You just have to learn how to transfer your skills into a digital age. Although hand drawn art won't be going away anytime soon. You need to learn the digital equivilants of your traditional tools in order to explore the full spectrum of creativity, so that you can know where you stand. I'm still trying to establish my art form and if it wasn't for these programs i don't think i would be as far a long as i am. they open new doors, you just have to give it a shot and know where to look for cool ass tutorials... Photoshop is probably the most amazing art tool since the pencil and sketchpad. i was unconfortable with it at first but after about a year i learned it's full potential. It is a program of mystery, easy to learn, impossible to master. If you want to do anything in the digital fields like design or game production, you're going to have to learn these programs, or some that are similar.

well don't think of it as brain measure ment, think of it as creating your own destiny. Some things in this world have to be done according to someone else's standards like tests and shit, but i try not to think of it as taking a test. I think of it as a video game. And this is the part where you take all your experience points and get go to the store to cash in all your shit so you can get the uber blade of doom and the shiny armour with +45AC full magic protection, Regeneration, and makes chocolate milk!

Go to your destiny young one, and the world is your's to conquer.

hey, i had a friend who failed it 3 times, but you can always take it again. Not like anyone has to know you took it that many times, no one will go back and say...hey wait a minute, this dude retook it that test lol.

Just go for it, give it your best shot, and if you fail you retake it, if you don't then your set.

It's all about your mindset. Everything in life is decided by us. Since everything changes and you can never predict the out come, the only thing you can have control over is the attitude with which you approach life.
Lemons to lemonade, sort of speak. I didn't believe it for a while either but it's true, if you have a great outlook on life and don't ever let anything get you down and always see the good in things, even failing a test, then there's nothing that can stop you from achieving whatever you want. I had gone through 2 really bad relationships back to back, found out my job market had hit rock bottom and that my school didn't have a good rep for producing good students, my dad got Hepatitis and diabetes, my mom was at risk of a heart attack and we couldn't afford peanut butter to get us through the week. It was then that i came to this preminition of enlightment...(did that even make sense? lol). If you let this world and all of its cares and material things and grades and things effect you, you will be consumed by them and forever will they dominate your future. If you change the viewpoint and see everything as a learning process in which everyone learns in a different way as it relates to them, then nothing is impossible and everything is stepping stone into who you want to become. Some get there faster than others, but it is those who take a longer harder journey through life that can appreciate it in all of it's wisdom. SO SAYS LEMMIWINKS!

So basically Graphic design feilds are more closely related to comercial advertisment art, bliboards, things on TV, ect. correct?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PIXEL-Of-DOOM In reply to pilot02003 [2004-11-15 18:52:44 +0000 UTC]

but it is involved in any creative field virtually.
comic books, novels, bilboards, signs, advertising, movies, anything that is creatively dressed up for selling purposes is involved.
but the programs are shared by a few other fields, like digital editing, cartoons, web design and animation, printing... all kinds of stuff.

if you're wanting to learn the programs, try to buy the basic owner's manuals, and after they have bored you to death get to barnes and nobel and check out the photoshop book section, there are some nifty things floating around there....photoshop and illustrator are connected so chances are you'll run across some illustrator books and info. also check out the magazine racks in the computer section....there are a few mags i check up on often....
photoshop User magazine
Computer arts Magazine
Special projects (computer arts puts this out)

photoshop user magazine is pretty photoshop oriented but there is tie ins with illustrator, Computer arts and Special Projects are kick ass for anything design related, they also come with cd's chock full of programs, filters, brushes, stock art, fonts, and design tutorials. They are kind of expensive, but soo worth it!

okay there's the source of a lot of my knowledge. use it well.

So i could be making cartoons and such? What about anything in the video gaming industry? Im constantly plauged by millions of ideas when i try to sleep, i could finally put them to good use.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PIXEL-Of-DOOM In reply to pilot02003 [2004-11-17 21:02:35 +0000 UTC]

totally but it depends on what you want to do in the gaming industry. If you want to actually help create the characters and things that happen in the game, you want to go into ANIMATION which you can find a program at most colleges. If you want to be a Texture mapper or do the coloring process you will want to look into Game design, This also ties in with doing character renderings and conceptual artwork that's mainly 2D before they start firing up the big MAYA rendering machines. In any event you'll want to make sure you are getting to know Photoshop, painter, and other digital painting programs. I happen to stick with 2 dimentional renderings and design so i am a graphic designer. You can find work just about anywhere, its just up to the supply and demand factor. If there are a lot of jobs open you'll find work, but chances are most of them are filled...so there are jobs...just none open .

You could also look into selling your ideas, find out what video game producers like konami and rockstar games are looking for as far as submitting video game ideas. Their should be some guidlines they can send you and a format in which you should submit ideas to them. You get paid for your ideas. I'm not really sure how to go about that but i know it's possible.

good luck

Well that was all long and confusng man lol. Anyways here is what id like to do. I want to make concepts of games, characters, ect. Id like to be able to be part of that feild, make the ideas, story lines, characters, but i dont want to do all the programming and such, just the designing. What degree should i earn?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PIXEL-Of-DOOM In reply to pilot02003 [2004-11-18 22:01:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, you could get a degree in visual communications or mass media, with emphasis on digital character design, or Get an Art degree focusing on cartooning, or visual concepts. Archetecture is another good field to look into as there are obviously buildings in video games. But i'd say just a general Art degree with emphasis on design of some sort would sufice. Also learn everything you can about the industry and look for ways to break into the market asap. Work in the mail room, it doesn't matter. Oh and get this you can get a job as a game tester you basically play games all day until you vomit but the games are usually unfinished like they don't have all the bells and whistles and colors and sounds added yet, so it can suck but also be a way for you to break into the game industry. Another thing...move to california, your best shot at getting into a high paying gig is to be near the companies themselves. There are some people who do freelance conceptual work for companies, but it's all about pitchen yourself and your artistic style. Confidence is the key.

Perhaps you could lighten the line of shadow or feather it out... such as blurring lightly... Rather than that, Awsome!
