Description Here is the first tutorial in a set of Paint Tool SAI tutorials that I am making. I thought that a settings tutorial would be the best to post first, as I will refer to this tutorial in future tutorials.

I hope I explained everything well. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

WOW! Thank you so much for the daily deviation!!! It is quite an honor! Thank you!!!

Hi! No, I'm sorry. I don't have a tutorial on layer settings yet. However, I'm currently working on a few tutorials. I'll make sure to include as much information as possible on layer settings.

If you need any help with anything, just let me know.

I wonder why my default watercolor brush didn't create anything when I stroke it ( God I don't know how to said this =_

Make sure to check your pressure sensitivity levels, particularly your "Smoothing Prs" setting. If you have this setting set too high, your brush with only create a blurring effect and not a stroke, under normal pressure. Try turning this setting down and see if it fixes. Let me know if you need anything else.

thank you so much for reply me~
this is the screen capture of my watercolor setting [link] even with that setting nothing appear when I stroke the brush
I don't understand why :/

Pixelmata In reply to DianneDejarjayes [2012-12-27 21:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, that is odd. Your settings look good. Does this only happen with the watercolor brush or is it the same way with all other brushes? Also, is the pressure sensitivity working with your other brushes (such as size pressure)?

Try turning Smoothing Prs all the way down to 0% and let me know if that changed anything for the watercolor. You can also try creating a new watercolor brush. Perhaps that specific watercolor brush is somehow glitched and not working. Let me know if that worked for you.

My other brushes seems ok, except.. maybe my Marker brush, is this [link] normal for a Marker?
yes the pressure sensitivity is working with my other brushes.

this is the result when I turned the Smoothing Prs to 0% [link]
oh I've tried so many times to create the new Watercolor brush, and all of them just the same, I remember my Watercolor already like that since the beginning, that's why I was kinda surprised when I see your tutorial. is that also mean that all my Watercolor brush is glitched or something?

It could just be some sort of incompatibility with your tablet perhaps. But from your screenshots, it looks like the dilution is a little too intense for some reason. Try reducing the Dilution to around 5% to 20% and see if that helps. This should make the stroke much darker. Also, for the watercolor tool's default quality setting of 2, it will be somewhat of a rough stroke. For a smoother stroke, try setting it to 4.

If reducing the Dilution doesn't help, you can also try reducing the Blending and/or the Persistence. Are you painting on a white colored layer or a transparent layer? If the layer is fill with a white color, then the problem could be that the white color is preventing the brush from creating decent strokes due to the Blending and Persistence mixing in with the white color. So, if this is the case, reducing the Blending and Persistence should fix this.

DianneDejarjayes In reply to Pixelmata [2012-12-28 00:49:01 +0000 UTC]

I see, that probably true, since I can't use my tablet on Photoshop, the result strokes sizes always changes, even if I didn't change the brush size.

I'm painting on a transparent layer :3
and I think it's worked, it's got darker [link] also tried with 2 colors [link]
I think it's fixed right? or do you think something still not right there?

Pixelmata In reply to DianneDejarjayes [2012-12-28 03:25:22 +0000 UTC]

The strokes are looking really good. That's about how I like mine to be. You can also just experiment with the settings to find the perfect fit for you if you want.

As for the tablet, what brand and model of tablet do you have? I recommend completely uninstalling your current tablet drivers and software and downloading a fresh install from the manufacturer's website. That's usually the best way to fix issues with the tablet.
